Board of Directors
word of thanks
from our Foundation Chairman
As we welcome the spring season, your
Foundation is gearing up for many exciting
events to benefit High Point Regional Health
System. Most exciting this year will be a new
occasion: our first “Sun & Stars Signature
Event” which will take place on Monday,
September 26. This is a date you will want to
save on your calendar right now because we
are planning a day and night that we promise
you will not want to miss! More details will
follow, but we can tell you now that we will
conclude the day with a fantastic reception
featuring an intimate concert at the High Point
Country Club with five time Grammy winner
Christopher Cross! As always, and most
importantly, the funds raised by the “Signature” event will benefit our
health system; in this case the Heart and Cancer Programs!
While we work hard to present you with engaging activities and fun
events, we hope you remember that community support for our
hospital is really the point of it all. Our goal is always to help ensure
that our healthcare professionals have the most advanced medical
equipment and services available to best meet the needs of the
patients, families and neighbors we serve at High Point Regional.
The Foundation strives to grow the list of people who make
commitments to our health system because every dollar counts in
helping to heal and to save lives. Thankfully, these efforts continue to
pay off. In this edition of our magazine, you will read how High Point
Regional Health System has been recognized as one of the top 50
cardio hospitals in the country! I hope you feel gratified in knowing
your generosity makes this level of healthcare excellence possible
right here in our community.
Thank you for all that you do for High Point Regional!

High Point Regional
Named One of the Top
Cardiovascular Hospitals in the Nation
On November 15, 2010, HPRHS President Jeff Miller
learned High Point Regional Health System had been
named one of the 50 top cardiovascular hospitals in
the nation for 2011 by Thomson Reuters.
“This recognition is a tremendous milestone for our
heart program,” Miller says. “Thomson Reuters is
the industry leader in collecting and assimilating
healthcare data and monitors vital healthcare trends,
such as excellence in cardiovascular care, across the
United States.
“Recognition by Thomson Reuters carries a great deal
of prestige,” Miller explains.
Over 1,000 hospitals in the United States offer the
cardiovascular services regularly monitored by
Thomson Reuters. Out of those hospitals, Thomson
Reuters selected the 50 best cardiovascular services.
Within those 50 top cardiovascular facilities, just 15 are
community hospitals like High Point Regional, Miller
points out.
This honor places High Point Regional in the same
hierarchy of healthcare providers as premier major
medical centers and teaching hospitals with
cardiovascular residency programs throughout the
nation.
“This is the biggest and best accomplishment that our
heart program has had,” explains cardiologist Dr. Zan
Tyson of Carolina Cardiology Cornerstone. “It’s a valid
accomplishment in that all of the hospitals monitored
are based on the same statistics. This is not an award
or a designation that you can seek or apply for.”
The “Top 50” designation is based on three years of
data about each hospital’s success in targeted areas.
In determining this honor, Thomson Reuters analyzed

the-art cardiovascular technology and research,

“Recognition by Thomson Reuters
carries a great deal of prestige.”
The hospitals that made it to the top tier were the
ones whose patients have higher survival rates,
shorter hospital stays, fewer readmissions, fewer
complications and lower costs of care.
“These are the very same goals we have always
maintained for heart care at High Point Regional,”
Miller says.
When High Point Regional’s leaders began plans to
expand the hospital’s cardiology services to include
cardiovascular surgery and a comprehensive heart
center well over 20 years ago, they pursued this vision
with one goal: Excellence.
In January 1991 High Point Regional performed its first
open heart surgery, and today the hospital performs
approximately 240 such surgeries annually. In 2001,
High Point Regional opened Carolina Regional Heart
Center, a facility that houses the offices of all
cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons, state-of-
“Dr. Cheek and I
have both been part
of this program since
the very beginning,”
says Dr. Tyson who specializes in heart rhythm
disorders. He is the director of Carolina Cardiology
Cornerstone’s Electrophysiology (EP) Program and
director for High Point Regional's Outpatient
Catheterization and EP laboratories.
“From the very beginning, our plans were to build one
of the best programs in the country,” Miller explains.
“Our region reached out to raise the funds necessary
to build – and continue to operate – this center. The
campaign raised a total of nearly $13 million dollars
which funded several projects. Contributions from Fred
& Barbara Wilson helped fund our Cath Lab and the
renovation of our critical care unit was funded by Jack
and Marsha Slane.”
“And thanks to the dedication of our cardiologists,
cardiothoracic surgeons, nurses and countless
support staff, we have been able to make that vision
a reality.”
Being named one of the top 50 heart programs in the
nation is affirmation that the entire Heart Team has had

Thomson Reuters 2011 Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals
This elite group of winners has raised the bar significantly, delivering higher survival rates, shorter hospital
stays, fewer readmissions and lower costs - which add up to enormous value for the communities they
serve. As a result, everyone benefits: patients, families, employers, insurers and the hospital itself.
Comparing the award winners to similar high-volume non-award winning hospitals, we found that if all
cardiovascular providers performed at the level of this year's winners:
• More than 7,500 additional lives could be saved.
• Nearly 12,000 additional patients could be complication-free.
• Approximately $910 million could be saved.

“I heard a patient from Lexington say that this is the
place to come for heart surgery,” says cardiovascular
surgeon Dr. Stephen Mills of Triad Cardiac & Thoracic
Surgery of High Point.
Dr. Mills, who was one of the first two cardiothoracic
(CT) surgeons in High Point Regional’s open heart
Cheek of Carolina Cardiology Cornerstone. Dr.
Cheek serves as director of the Inpatient
Catheterization Laboratory at High Point Regional
Hospital and serves with Dr. Tyson on the board of
directors for Carolina Regional Heart Center.
“There is a lot of interaction between us,” explains Dr.
Cheek, who along with Dr. Tyson
and Dr. Mills has been
instrumental in Carolina Regional
Heart Center’s vision and
success.
“It’s been very gratifying to watch this
program grow from the ground up and to
know that patients now view us as their
first choice for care”
surgery program and who has been with the program
since its inception, takes immense satisfaction in the
Thomson Reuters designation, yet he never loses
sight of the focus of Carolina Regional Heart Center
– the patients.
“It’s been very gratifying to watch this program grow
from the ground up and to know that patients now view
us as their first choice for care,” Mills says.
“Our statistics are very impressive, and that’s a result
of communication and collaboration between the CT
surgeons, the cardiologists and the nursing staff. Right
now our hospital stay for cardiothoracic surgery is three
days. This is what patients can expect when they come
here,” Mills explains.
“The good outcomes of patient care are a reflection of
the culture and the teamwork here. We’ve always had
high expectations and attention to detail,” Mills
explains.
Keys to the success of High Point Regional’s heart
program are fairly simple, in theory that is.
“All 20 cardiologists on staff are members of the
same medical group. Consequently, they all follow
the same patient care protocols and maintain open
communication,” points out cardiologist Dr. Barry
“There’s a comfort level here that
you don’t see at other hospitals,”
Dr. Mills says. “We understand
how the other thinks. We understand the direction we
will each take with a patient. There’s a tremendous
ability of the nurses to know what to expect for our
patients’ care too.”
Plus, the entire team feels rooted in this community –
a community that put its faith and its financial support
behind a vision to provide excellent heart care.
“We’ve been the recipients of a generous community,”
Mills says. “This community has made certain that we
had the best facilities in which to provide care.
The Millis family in particular has continued to
provide ongoing support over the years and most
recently established the Millis Heart Fund at High
Point Regional.
“We wanted to provide a way to recognize the
incredible work and achievements of our
cardiovascular team at High Point Regional” says
Molly Millis Hedgecock. “Our hope was that our
contributions would encourage others to help
ensure this outstanding level of healthcare is
maintained and available to all in our community
now and into the future.”

High Point Regional Health System Receives
$
Grant to Help Those with
Mental Illness
High Point Regional Health System
received a $380,000 grant, which will
be used in collaboration with the
Mental Health Association in High
Point to establish an outpatient
treatment service for needy adults
who suffer from severe and
persistent mental illness. The grant is
from The Duke Endowment.
“I am thrilled about this grant and the
support it will enable the community
to provide to patients coming out of
our hospital, said Kitty Stafford,
Behavioral Health clinical director at
High Point Regional. For the past five
years, there has been a tremendous
gap in outpatient therapy services
available in our community. This
grant will provide patients with an
opportunity to receive ongoing,
outpatient therapy and hopefully
prevent re-hospitalization.”
Thanks to the grant, between 450
and 500 patients annually will receive
care who would otherwise have no
access to outpatient treatment.
Mental illness statistics are both
alarming and growing. In fact, more
than 27,000 residents in Guilford
County suffer from mental illness and
with N.C. Mental Health Reform,
these numbers are increasing.
"With the increase in psychiatric
patients seen in the Emergency
“This grant will support High

Health Association in providing
outpatient services in conjunction
with medication management for
increased positive outcomes.

Department, the problem of where
to seek outpatient services has
placed a huge strain on the system,
said Meg Cashion, Emergency
Department manager at High Point
Regional. As a result, there is a lack
of available resources to serve
indigent patients who are discharged
from hospitals with no plan for
necessary individual therapy.
High Point Regional will develop
the patient’s aftercare plan and
facilitates a timely referral to the
Mental Health Association. The
Mental Health Association will make
personal contact with the patient
to increase the likelihood of followthrough with aftercare/discharge
planning for outpatient services and
medication management.
“We are extremely fortunate to have
been the recipient of this grant. This
will assist us in providing the followup care that is seriously needed."
The Duke Endowment, located in Charlotte, N.C.,
seeks to fulfill the legacy of James B. Duke by improving
lives and communities in the Carolinas through higher
education, health care, rural churches and children’s
services. Since its inception, the Endowment has
awarded nearly $2.7 billion in grants.

DOCTORS MAKING
HOUSE CALLS
INTRODUCING “RAPID ROUNDS”
Familiar with the concept of hospital rounds? If so, Denise Potter, Vice
President of the Foundation, has introduced "Rapid Rounds" which takes
"medical rounding" to an entirely new level. To date, six receptions have been
held in homes of friends of the hospital throughout the community since last
year. The receptions which typically have 50 in attendance, each features
physicians and nursing professionals who provide information on the latest
advances regarding patient care programs, technology and services on a
variety of specialized areas. Rapid Rounds provides an opportunity for guests
to be "up close and personal" with physicians in a non-medical casual setting.
"It's a great way to become more informed about all of the exciting
developments and exceptional healthcare offerings available at High Point
Regional" says Potter. "We have received such a positive response from
these events that we will continue to offer them in the future."

The Gift of Music
Michael Williford, son of Tim Williford and Dr. Susan Williford, an
oncologist with Emerywood Oncology, is a first-year medical student
at Wake Forest School of Medicine and has already mastered the art
of giving!
After winning $25,000.00 from American Eagle for co-creating the
MedAssist program while a high school student and volunteer at High
Point Regional’s Cancer Center, he felt compelled to make two
generous gifts to help cancer patients here. First he made a donation
to the LoveLine Cancer Support program which provides assistance
to patients and their families with expenses associated with their
cancer care.
Michael’s second gift was the gift of music. He very generously
donated a Yamaha Clavinova electronic piano which can be
programmed to provide music all day. Hearing soothing music upon
entering the Cancer Center has provided a warm welcome for our
patients and visitors!
