Vol 24 (Sept 2011) - Telepresence Options

advertisement
September 2011
Volume 24
Dear Subscribers,
Our lead story this week is telepresence and videoconferencing provider Vidyo has raised an additional
$22.5MM in investment from QuestMark Partners, with participation from existing Vidyo investors
Four River Group, Menlo Ventures, Rho Ventures, and Star Ventures. This brings total investment
in Vidyo to $97MM. The investment is the latest in a number of recent large investments in the
visual collaboration industry including Polycom’s $89MM acquisition of HP’s Visual Collaboration
Business Unit and Microsoft’s $8.5 Billion acquisition of Skype. It’s beginning to look like
sophisticated investors believe we are headed towards widespread adoption of visual collaboration
globally.
There is also an interesting interview that I conducted with Dave Ryan, who runs the Americas for Tata
Communications. Tata has made one of the biggest investments in telepresence globally and runs the
world’s largest publicly available network of multi-screen, multi-codec telepresence environments based on
the Cisco TelePresence solution. The Tata public network connects 33 locations in 17 countries and will add
over a dozen locations this year. Dave discusses the success of telepresence at Tata, the growth and success
of the public network, and Tata’s strategy to create an open exchange environment for regional and national
carriers to connect.
One interesting trend that caught my attention this month is port 80-friendly interactive video chat is now
being embedded in websites and documents to instantly start a session with sales reps and customer service
agents. Check out Live Advizor and Utribo as two companies that are making that happen.
Finally, we are still looking for a Managing Editor to help take the website, newsletter, and magazine to the
next level. If you know of anyone who might fit the bill then please send them along.
Warmly,
HSL

Inside the Freaky World of Next-Gen Night
Vision
September 14, 2011 by Noah Shachtman
Roanoke, Virginia -- A pair of buildings on Plantation
Drive sits just past the tractor-supply store, right in front
of the barn belonging to the local women's college. From
the street, the cream-colored structures don't look like
much more than typical office buildings; only a wire fence
distinguishes them from their neighbors. Inside, however,
is a laboratory and fabrication facility where engineers
produce one of the U.S. military's most important
advantages over its foes: the ability to see in the dark, when others are all but blind.

'Person Of Interest' Launches A Creepy Billboard Campaign
September 12, 2011 Johnathan Moormann
Ology.com - The new CBS crime drama "Person of
Interest" will be on the air soon, but until then, they'd
like to keep an eye on their viewers. The drama,
starring Jesus and Ben Linus (or, if you're boring,
Jim Caviezel and Michael Emerson), is about an
eccentric billionaire and an ex-CIA agent who join
forces to stop crimes before they happen using high
tech surveillance. With both J.J. Abrams and
Jonathan Nolan as executive producers, the whole production has a pretty good geek pedigree, so
it's not surprising that they've gone for a fancy bit of marketing.

David Hockney uses technology to provide new ways to see the world
September 1, 2011 | William Zimmerman
September/October 2011
By Martin Gayford, MIT's Technology Review via ISPR
One of your basic contentions, I say to the British artist David Hockney, is that there is always more
to be seen, everywhere, all the time. "Yes," he replies emphatically. "There's a lot more to be seen."
We are sitting in his spacious house in the quiet Yorkshire seaside town of Bridlington. In front of
us is a novel medium, a fresh variety of moving image--a completely new way of looking at the
world--that Hockney has been working on for the last couple of years.

Mobile 3D interactivity: The iPhone Virtual Reality Viewer
Edwin Kee, Ubergizmo via ISPR
08/18/2011
The iPhone is one versatile handset, and you
can add the iPhone Virtual Reality Viewer to its
fast growing list of capabilities. As the name
suggests, this device will work in tandem with
an iPhone to develop immersive, 3D viewing
experiences. Just how does it work? Well, it marries the built-in accelerometer in the iPhone
alongside free downloadable applications, allowing the 3D environments within to move whenever
the iPhone is moved.
Basically, you hold the iPhone Virtual Reality Viewer just like a pair of binoculars, where you can
manipulate the iPhone's touchscreen display via a couple of finger holes in the bottom. Viewing 3D
movie trailers are not the only thing this puppy is capable of - no sir, you can also indulge in a slew
of interactive games, including roaming around underwater with 360º movement, looking for prey
and buried treasure, or perhaps you would want to take a virtual tour of Los Angeles' Santa Monica
Pier?

Advertisers start using facial recognition to tailor pitches
August 21, 2011
By Shan Li and David Sarno, Los Angeles Times
Picture this: You stop in front of a digital advertising
display at a mall and suddenly an ad pops up touting
makeup, followed by one for shoes and then one for
butter pecan ice cream.
It seems to know you're a woman in your late 20s and, in fact, it does. When you looked at the
display, it scanned your facial features and tailored its messages to you.
Once the stuff of science fiction and high-tech crime fighting, facial recognition technology has
become one of the newest tools in marketing, even though privacy concerns abound.
The Venetian resort, hotel and casino in Las Vegas has started using it on digital displays to tailor
suggestions for restaurants, clubs and entertainment to passersby.

Logitech's LifeSize Connections 1.0, available
this fall, offers a cloud-delivered infrastructure for high-definition video conferencing, which it touts as
"democratizing" video conferencing by making it available to businesses that can't afford to build their
own video conferencing systems. Initially, it is being offered as a standalone service only on desktop
computers with plans down the road for integrating it with unified communications systems and
supporting mobile devices.

Reach out and touch 3D characters with RePro3D
September 17, 2011 by Nancy Owano
(PhysOrg.com) -- Lonely gamers who have felt the pain of
being separated by a screen from their favorite
personalities now have a way to reach out and touch their
game characters, and that new way is RePro3D. A group of
researchers from Keio University in Japan have come up with a 3-D screen that lets the user,
glasses-free, see and "touch" characters on the screen. The word "touch" is in quotes because the
technology is about a 3-D parallax display with infrared camera that recognizes the movements of
the user's hand and the character on the screen reacts to the movements instantly.

How telemedicine can turn consultants into teleworkers
September 14, 2011 | Hogan Keyser
Patients can benefit from faster access to drugs and
greatly reduced travel times when specialists can work
remotely
Steve Gold - Tuesday 13 September 2011 09:00 BST (via
The Guardian) - The introduction of high speed broadband
across the UK in recent years means that 80% of the adult
population now has easy access to the internet either at home or at work. But so far, this has made
surprisingly little difference to the way in which healthcare services are provided by clinicians and
nursing staff.
Despite a lot of talk at healthcare conferences, the reality is that you need to look hard to find
examples of where telemedicine - as internet-enabled healthcare is known as within the NHS - is
starting to make a difference.

yes," Dr. Sean Mackey of the Stanford University School of Medicine in California, whose study

Glowpoint Hits B2B Video Big Time
September 13, 2011 | Hogan Keyser
September 13, 2011 (Wainhouse.com) - Well,
we've heard a lot about B2B videoconferencing
for the last two years or more, much of it
focused around the telepresence fairy. And
while you might argue that B2B has been
around since the ISDN days of the 1990s, B2B
does represent its own authentic challenges
when it comes to IP video. At any rate, B2B is
definitely happening and the latest proof point
is in the most recent announcement from Glowpoint. Glowpoint claims to have 446 companies
(and 39,000 endpoints) connected to the company's global exchange for B2B visual
communications. Two interesting statistics emerge from this: one is that this represents about 2/3
of Glowpoint's total customer base; the other is that about half of the nearly 450 companies have
opted in to have their numbers listed in Glowpoint's public global video exchange directory. Those
who are listed can be called by any other member of the exchange by using Glowpoint's telephonelike dialing plan. Those who are not listed publicly can still be called if they give the remote person
their exchange number. Point-to-point calls can be made by the participants without assistance
from Glowpoint's VNOC.

Screen time: how video conferencing is gaining ground

great deal about how much the use of telepresence has

Full-duplex breakthrough could double wireless
capacity with no new towers
September 8, 2011 via Kurzweilai.net
Rice University engineering researchers have made a radiotransmission breakthrough that could allow wireless phone
companies to double (or maybe more) throughput on their networks
without adding a single cell tower, and that could be ready for 4.5G
networks.
Rice's new "full-duplex" technology allows wireless devices like cell phones and electronic tablets
to both "talk" and "listen" to wireless cell towers on the same frequency -- something that requires
two different frequencies with today's technology.
"Our solution requires minimal new hardware, both for mobile devices and for networks, which is
why we've attracted the attention of just about every wireless company in the world," said Ashutosh
Sabharwal, professor of electrical and computer engineering at Rice. "The bigger change will be
developing new wireless standards for full-duplex. I expect people may start seeing this when
carriers upgrade to 4.5G or 5G networks in just a few years."

Study: Telecommuting is worth a pay cut, especially for men

Now, a new survey is confirming these findings -- but with a

Flexible jobs site Momcorps asked 1,071 working Americans
about flexible working and work-life balance. And like Dice and Staples before it, the site found
that a significant percentage would take a smaller paycheck in exchange for flexibility. 42 percent
of respondents said they would be willing to give up some percentage of their salary for more
flexibility at work. On average they'd accept a six percent cut.

Do Passive 3D TVs Trade Quality for Comfort?
By Patrick Miller, PCWorld Sep 7, 2011 9:00 AM
Polarized "passive" 3D TVs hit the market in the
beginning of the year as a response to the bulky,
expensive, complicated active-shutter 3D TVs that
turned off many would-be buyers. But many home
theater enthusiasts (and TV manufacturers) claimed that
they sacrificed image quality in the process.
DisplayMate Technologies, a display calibration
software developer, pit active and passive 3D TVs against each other to get to the bottom of this and
published the results in a freely-available report (3D TV Display Technology Shoot-Out). As it
turns out, passive TVs have a more restricted viewable range than active-shutter sets, but they don't
lose detail. Read on for more on their testing procedures, as well as our own in-house testing results.

BBC plans to use 3D and 'super hi-vision' for London Olympics
September 6, 2011 |
Executive in charge of 2012 coverage has spoken about the proposed experiment at the Edinburgh
television festival.
Mark Sweney, The Guardian via ISPR
The BBC is considering plans to broadcast the 100
metres final of the London Olympics in 3D, as well as
trying out a new technology that delivers picture
quality said to be 16 times better than HDTV.
Roger Mosey, the BBC executive in charge of the
corporation's London 2012 coverage, told reporters on
the sidelines of the Edinburgh international television
festival that 3D coverage for the 100m and other
events was "certainly on the agenda", as part of a "limited experiment".
The event will see world record holder Usain Bolt seeking to restore some pride after being
disqualified from the world championships on Sunday, following a false start.
The BBC will also test "super hi-vision", a new broadcasting technology so advanced it is not
expected to be in homes for a decade. Three 15 metre (50ft) high screens will be erected around the
country so that the public have a chance of seeing the imagery that Mosey said was so good it
would match up with the experience of watching from the stands.

Business Videoconferencing Showdown: Meet Face-to-Face

serving vital roles in most small to midsize
companies, it has become increasingly important to
be able to meet face-to-face with people across the building, across town, or across the ocean

Fortunately, video-based conferencing services have evolved to meet this demand, making it easier
than ever to share documents, demonstrate software, and work collaboratively on a shared
whiteboard from the comfort of your desktop PC.
To help you choose the right videoconferencing system for your business, we took five of the most
compelling services--8x8 Virtual Room, Adobe Connect, Cisco WebEx Meeting Center, Citrix

How Microsoft Researchers Might Invent a Holodeck
September 3, 2011 |
By Dylan Tweney, Wired.com's Gadget Lab
REDMOND, Washington -- Deep inside
Microsoft is the brain of a mad scientist.
You might not think so, given the banality of the
company's ubiquitous products: Windows,
Office, Hotmail, Exchange Server, Active
Directory. The days are long past when this kind
of software could light up anyone's imagination,
except maybe an accountant's.
But Microsoft has an innovative side that's still capable of producing surprises. In fact, Microsoft
spends more than $9 billion a year, and employs tens of thousands of people in research and
development alone. While most of that goes toward coding the next versions of the company's
major products, a lot gets funneled into pure research and cutting-edge engineering.

lab at the University of Southern California to hear a recording of the performance would have no
way to know how big the room was.
