Chelsea Rochman PhD Candidate in Joint Program: UC Davis/San Diego State University Department of Biology Ecology Graduate Group San Diego State University UC Davis San Diego, CA, 92182 Davis, CA 95616 Email: chelsear@sciences.sdsu.edu, cmrochman@ucdavis.edu Research Interests I am interested in eco-toxicological impacts of marine debris, specifically plastics. The oceans are a sink for many pollutants. Plastics leach toxic pollutants upon degradation, and also adsorb POPs from surrounding ocean water. As organisms consume plastic, these toxins potentially accumulate in marine foodwebs. March-December 2007 Research Experience 5Gyres Transect Across the S. Atlantic November 2010 Sample water, plastic and fish to look for contaminants in open ocean as a result of marine plastic debris. Graduate Research Hentschel Lab/San Diego State University Aug. 2009-present Field work in the San Diego Bay using plastic pellets to assess the rate and concentration of POPs adsorbing to plastics across different resin types and different regions of the bay. SEAPLEX Research Cruise Scripps Institution of Oceanography Aug. 2009 Went to the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre on a research vessel in order to examine the accumulation of plastic debris in the ocean. My focus involved collecting samples in order to assess the toxicological impacts of the debris on the ocean ecosystem. BISP 199/ Undergrad Individual Research Lisa Levin’s Lab, Scripps Institution of Oceanography Summer and Fall of 2007 Analysis of sediment cores from the Oregon margin examining low oxygen effects on macrofaunal density, community composition, and diversity. Undergraduate Research University of Queensland, Australia; Fall of 2006 -Comparing density and diversity of meiofauna in different sediment grain sizes in Moreton Bay -Comparing photosynthetic quantum yields of Acropora aspera and Goniastrea favulus on the coral reef flat of Heron Island in the Great Barrier Reef.
