Millsboro resident Dominic Zuppo is feeling
pretty good these days. He had a scare last year, and
now at age 72—after a cardiac procedure, significant
health education, and a new exercise regimen—he
appreciates each day more than ever.
It began unexpectedly at a Christmas dinner last
year in Pennsylvania. One minute he began feeling
hot and sweaty during a conversation, and the next
thing he can remember, he was flat on the floor,
face-to-face with a paramedic above him. He wasn’t
sure how long he had been lying there, but people
around him were concerned.
He was checked out at a local hospital and he
then returned to his home in Millsboro. He followed
up with his Lewes cardiologist, who sent him to
Beebe Medical Center for a diagnostic cardiac catheterization—a test where the doctor uses a tiny catheter to see if there are any blockages inside the

arteries in the heart that could cause a heart attack.
Mr. Zuppo’s condition required Beebe interventional cardiologist Mouhanad Freih, MD, to have him taken to Beebe’s Cardiac Catheterization Lab to place two stents in Mr. Zuppo’s coronary arteries
to improve the flow of blood to his heart.
“I was blessed,” Mr. Zuppo says nine months
later. “The doctor fixed me up and now I feel great.”
Mr. Zuppo is one of more than 6,000 patients
who have had either a diagnostic or therapeutic cardiac catheterization at Beebe Medical Center since
the Interventional Cardiology program began nearly
five years ago. He is also one of more than 1,500
patients who have had the medical procedure to
open one or more clogged coronary arteries.
HealthGrades® Ranks Beebe
#1 in Delaware for Coronary
Interventional Procedures
Beebe Medical Center’s Interventional
Cardiology program has been recognized by
HealthGrades®, the agency that rates hospitals,
medical facilities, and physicians around the nation.
HealthGrades has named Beebe Medical Center a
recipient of the Coronary Intervention Excellence
Award™ for 2012. It also has ranked Beebe Medical
Center #1 in Delaware for Coronary Interventional Procedures for two years in a row
(2011–2012) and among the Top 5% in the
nation for Coronary Interventional Procedures
for 2012.
The ratings are based in the Centers for Medicare
and Medicaid Services (CMS) databank of 40 million
hospital records showing patient outcomes. Through
analysis, HealthGrades establishes individual quality
ratings for nearly 5,000 hospitals based on riskadjusted rates of mortality and in-hospital complications in 27 procedures and diagnoses.
Today, Beebe’s board certified, interventional cardiologists treat patients who are scheduled for cardiac procedures. They also are available around the
clock to immediately treat patients with a heart
attack. These cardiologists are Ehtasham Qureshi,
MD, Medical Director of Beebe’s Cardiac
Catheterization program; Mouhanad Freih, MD; and G. Robert Myers, MD. The national average time from entry to an emergency department with a heart attack and opening up the clogged artery is recommended to be less than 90 minutes. At Beebe Medical Center the average time is an
impressive 58 minutes.
Beebe Medical Center’s Interventional Cardiology
program is supported through a comprehensive collaboration between the Emergency Department,
dedicated Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory nurses
and staff and physicians, the Intensive Care Unit, and dedicated cardiac units. Beebe has dedicated
cardiac intensive care and step down units to care
for patients before and after a cardiac cath. There
also are dedicated cardiothoracic (CT) surgeons on
staff and a fully accredited CT surgery program.

Beebe Medical Foundation 2nd Annual
Treat the Beat
Bringing Community together
against Heart Disease
Seven-year-old Jayson Kirschner,
accompanied by six children wearing “Jayson’s Walk for All Kids
Hearts” name tags, was among the
150 people who walked through the City of
Lewes in September 2011 to raise awareness
of heart disease.
The Lewes youngsters were taking part in
Beebe Medical Foundation’s 2nd annual Treat the
Beat 5K walk. In all, more than 200 people supported the event and gave a total of more than
$20,000 in pledges and gifts to be used for cardiac and vascular services at Beebe Medical
Center. Last year the money raised was used to
purchase a NuStep Stepper for Beebe’s Cardiac
Rehab Department, to improve follow-up care for
congestive heart failure patients, and to expand
education about heart disease in local schools.
At just two weeks old, Jayson had to have his
first open-heart surgery to repair a defect of his
aorta. And again, at five months, he had another
surgery to repair the aorta. “He has only begun
to understand how serious it is,” his mother,
Betsy Kirschner, says. “But he’s a trooper.” Betsy
Kirschner says that although Jayson is a patient at
the Wilmington-based Nemours/Alfred I. DuPont
Children’s Hospital, he’s been treated twice in
Beebe Medical Center’s Emergency Department.
“They’ve been wonderful. They stay in contact
with Nemours and do exactly what should be
done,” she says. “There is wonderful collaboration
between the two hospitals.”
Jayson Kirschner is seen here with his gym teacher, Tim Bamforth of
Seaside Striders.

Millsboro resident Pat Hopkins walks Tito, her 230-pound Italian mastiff, at Roosevelt Inlet, following her cardiac
catheterization and stent placement in a coronary artery accessed through her wrist.
Beebe Offers Advanced Interventional Procedure
Millsboro resident Pat Hopkins learned that when she needed a cardiac catheterization to open a clogged coronary artery, she could have an alternative
procedure at Beebe Medical Center called a radial artery (wrist) access cardiac
catheterization. This means that for selected patients having a coronary invasive
procedure, the cardiologist inserts the catheter into the radial artery in the wrist
rather than in the femoral artery in the groin, and then threads it from there into
an artery in the heart. She was the first patient at Beebe to have a stent placed
into a cardiac artery using this method.
“We are proud to introduce this method to our patients,” Dr. Qureshi says.
“Though it is not new, it is generally performed in large, teaching medical institutions. Improvement in medical technologies has allowed us to bring this method
to our community.”
Dr. Qureshi performed the radial artery access cardiac cath on Mrs. Hopkins
in May of 2011, and she soon returned to her job and to walking her dog. She
says that she was happy she had the opportunity to have the alternative method
because she had pulled a
muscle in her groin following knee surgery and
she thought that the femoral artery access method
would have been too difficult for her.
“I had read about the
procedure, and I was so
happy to learn that Beebe
offered it and that I was
able to have it.” n

What you should know about
Heart Disease
Heart disease is the number-one killer in the U.S. It is also a major cause of
disability. There are many different forms of heart disease. The most common
cause of heart disease is narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries, the
blood vessels that supply blood to the heart itself. This is called coronary artery
disease and happens slowly over time. It is the major reason people have heart
attacks.
Other kinds of heart problems may occur within the valves in the heart, or the heart may not pump well and cause heart failure. Some people are born with heart disease.
Prevention
You can help reduce your risk of heart disease by taking steps to control factors that put you at greater risk:
• Control your blood pressure
• Lower your cholesterol
• Don’t smoke
• Get enough exercise
• Get regular medical check-ups
Signs
• Pain or discomfort in the center of the chest—the most common sign in both
men and women
• Pain or discomfort in other areas of the upper body, including the arms, back,
neck, jaw, or stomach
• Other symptoms, such as a shortness of breath, breaking out in a cold sweat,
nausea, or light-headedness
Women are somewhat more likely than men to experience signs other than
discomfort in the chest, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, and
back or jaw pain.
Call 9-1-1 immediately if you or someone you know
is experiencing these symptoms. Remember, minutes
matter!

Beebe Cardiac
Rehabilitation Program
The Cardiac Rehabilitation program, established in 1982, is designed to limit the effects of
cardiac illness and to stabilize, or improve, the
patient’s condition. Registered nurses and exercise
physiologists work with patients, monitoring exercise programs, offering individual and group
education programs, and addressing specific riskfactor modifications.

Beebe Auxiliary Celebrates 75 Years
Looking to the future
The early 1930s was an exciting time for Beebe Medical Center. Despite the
Great Depression that had paralyzed the nation, historical records show that
money was flowing into Lewes to fund the growth of the tiny, three-room hospital
that had been established in 1916 by Lewes physician brothers Drs. Richard and
James Beebe. In 1927, Wilmington residents Benjamin F. and Helen M. Shaw
funded the construction of the now familiar white building—and donated more
funds that eventually led to a hospital of 60 beds. Wilmington resident Mary
Thompson, also interested in having a hospital in the popular resort area of
Rehoboth Beach, in 1934 raised $100,000 to expand the hospital, paying for what is now known as the Thompson Wing.
In 1936, with a backdrop of a burgeoning hospital and a nursing school constantly in need of new supplies, a group of women got together in Lewes in the
home of Mrs. Edwin Marshall to form a new organization. Born that day was the
Junior Auxiliary of the Beebe Hospital of Sussex County Inc., the predecessor of
the Beebe Medical Auxiliary. The organization’s purpose was “to promote the

welfare of the hospital, provide recreational facilities
for student nurses, direct the baby guild, and to take
care of the necessary equipment.”
In 1938, the Auxiliary held a ball to raise money
to buy furniture for the Thompson Wing. In those
days, the women met for tea in private homes where
they wore their favorite hats and gloves. They sewed
curtains for hospital windows and collected blankets,
hot-water bag covers, and baby supplies.
Today, that organization is 253-men-and-women
strong and is the oldest fundraising organization for
Beebe Medical Center. The Auxiliary volunteers run
the gift shop at the hospital, the Beebe Treasure
Chest Thrift Shop in the Midway Shopping Center,
and multiple fundraisers throughout the year. In
2010, the organization made a leadership gift of
$300,000 to Beebe Medical Foundation’s Nursing
Education Campaign, the Auxiliary’s largest single gift up to that time. This year it gave $305,000 to the establishment of a new and larger chapel, where
visitors, families, patients, and team members can
find a place of solace. Over the years, the Auxiliary
has raised more than $3 million for Beebe Medical
Center and its programs.
On October 23, 2011, at its official 75th Anniversary luncheon, Auxiliary members were honored
with tributes: a Declaration from the City of Lewes
from Mayor Jim Ford; a Proclamation from Delaware
State Senators Joe Booth and Gary F. Simpson; and a tribute from the Beebe Medical Foundation, the
fundraising arm of Beebe Medical Center. Auxiliary
President Michael Clemmer proudly read a tribute
sent by Delaware Governor Jack Markell.
“We are a growing organization of people who
recognize the importance of having a quality healthcare facility in our community,” Clemmer says. “In
this time when so many auxiliaries have gone by the wayside, ours remains strong, a tribute to our
volunteers who work so hard and to the cohesiveness of our community.”
Besides fundraising, many of the Auxiliary members also volunteer at the information desks in the hospital, as well as in the Emergency
Department, offering comfort to the friends and family members of patients who are being treated.
Several celebratory events have taken place this
year as members have come together. At the annual
membership luncheon, 15 women were honored for being members for 30 or more years. They were:
Jean Cochran (1954), Elaine Dewey-Shupe (1975),
Nancy Horneck (1980), Sally Jones (1981), Marie
Knox (1974), Doreen Lyons (1977), Ruth Macintire
(1956), Alice Masterson (1972), Anna B. Moore
(1974), Betty Moore (1960), Dorothy Pedicone
(1980), Thelma Rowland (1976), Doris (Ginger)
Snowden (1974), Gertrude Tharp (1955), and Jackie Travis (1954).
“The men and women in the Beebe Medical
Auxiliary have truly made a difference to Beebe
Medical Center,” says Jeffrey M. Fried, FACHE,
President and CEO of Beebe Medical Center. “They
have remained loyal to the medical center. They have
been there when we have needed them, and they
have come up with creative ways to raise money.”

Giving
This year, Beebe Medical Foundation received a $3 million donation from the
Ma-Ran Foundation for the Nursing Education Campaign. The gift was the largest
single donation in the history of Beebe Medical Center. The donation means that
construction on the Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing could begin next
spring, and it gives real hope that the remaining $2 million needed to complete
the project will be raised and that the expanded, modernized school will come to fruition.
Randall and Margaret Rollins, whose foundation made the gift, care deeply
about Lewes and Beebe Medical Center. They are
also members of a family that has supported the
medical center for generations. As you read
through the following pages of donors, you will
see so many families who have given over generations, sometimes in memory of their loved ones,
sometimes in honor of a friend—all to help
improve the local medical services for everyone.
Beebe’s Rollins Wing was named after
the late John Rollins, pictured here with
his wife Michele Rollins.
The Tunnell legacy began in the early 1980s when Robert W. Tunnell joined the Beebe Medical Center
Board. He and his wife Eolyne gave $1 million to establish a cancer center at the hospital.
Randall and Margaret, known as “Peggy” to her Lewes childhood friends, have
been donating to the hospital for years, quietly and unassumingly. Randall’s uncle
John Rollins also supported the medical center through monetary donations. He gave $1 million in 1985 that supported the construction of what is known as the Rollins Wing. John and his wife Michele Rollins continued to support the
medical center with monetary donations and as volunteers. Even after John died,
Michele stayed involved.
The Tunnell family is in its third generation of supporting Beebe Medical
Center through giving, as well as through hands-on volunteer efforts. The Tunnell
legacy began in the early 1980s when Robert W. Tunnell joined the Beebe Medical
Center Board. He and his wife Eolyne gave $1 million to establish a cancer center
at the hospital. More than a decade later, when the demand for cancer treatment
outgrew the walls of the hospital, Robert’s son Robert Tunnell Jr. (Rob) gave $1.5 million to establish the new center at the Beebe Health Campus in Rehoboth
Beach. In 2006, Rob’s son Robert Tunnell III and his wife Mindi Tunnell stepped
into the role of philanthropy, both in fundraising and in volunteer efforts. They
became members of the Board of Ambassadors, and Mindi served as Chairperson
of the Beebe Art Auction.
Beebe Medical Center is fortunate to enjoy the support of so many in our
community. We began 95 years ago as the dream of two local brothers and physicians, Richard and James Beebe. Now, as a community-owned hospital, we have
carried forward this tradition of friendship, family, and giving. We are grateful for
the generosity that has allowed us to expand and to
improve our medical facilities, and we look forward to
serving the community for generations to come.
Robert and Eolyne Tunnell began the Tunnell legacy with the funding
of the original cancer center.

Beebe Honor Roll of Donors
(7/1/2010–6/30/2011)
Beebe Medical Foundation was established in 1989 with the sole mission to raise philanthropic support for Beebe Medical Center.
Through the efforts of the Foundation more than $35 million has been
raised to support new construction and renovation of medical facilities, new and ongoing medical programs, and to establish an endowment fund to ensure Beebe will always be available for this community.
As an independent not-for-profit organization Beebe Medical Center relies
on the generosity of the many individuals, businesses, and foundations that
are listed in this Honor Roll of Donors.
Beebe Medical Foundation is located in the former home of Dr. Richard Beebe, who co-founded
Beebe Medical Center in 1916 with his brother Dr. James Beebe. The house originally stood down
the street on the site of what is today the clinical building of the hospital.

Nursing Education Campaign
Major Gifts and Grants
The proceeds from the Nursing Education Campaign will enable Beebe Medical Center to expand the Margaret H. Rollins School
of Nursing. To date, $6 million has been raised, and $2 million more is needed to complete the expansion.
Major Gifts and Grants are received from foundations, corporations, and individuals who support Beebe’s core values and mission
of providing quality healthcare to our community. This funding provides support for capital expenditures and new programs and
services.
Nurses provide frontline care and comfort at difficult times in patients’ lives. But there is a critical shortage of nurses in Delaware
and across the country. The new Nursing Education Campaign will make it possible to double the capacity of the current nursing
class, enabling us to graduate more nurses.

15 th Annual Holiday of Lights Tree Lighting
December 2, 2010
Marking the beginning of the holiday season, this annual event is an opportunity to remember or honor family members and
friends. Lights are placed on a tree located on the front lawn of Beebe Medical Center for each family member or friend honored
or remembered.
The 2010 Holiday of Lights proceeds benefited Beebe Medical Center’s Child Obesity Prevention program. Beebe operates
Wellness Centers in three area high schools where dietitians work with students to educate them on healthy food choices.
Funding from the Holiday of Lights will allow this program to expand to students in the 3rd grade. (Research has demonstrated
that children begin to make more food choices in that grade, so it is the ideal time to begin food education.)

Jean & Joan Fund Golf Tournament
October 5, 2010
The Jean & Joan Fund was founded in 1999 as a volunteer, independent fundraising organization of Sussex County neighbors
who had the vision of assuring that cancer patients at the Tunnell Cancer Center and their loved ones have every opportunity for
successful diagnosis and treatment.
The Jean & Joan Fund is named after Joan Martin, who passed away from colorectal cancer in 1998, and Jean James, who
passed away from brain cancer a year later. The founders wished to honor their memory by providing support for cancer patients.
Since 1999, the annual golf tournament has helped fund transport vehicles, create a Reflection Center and a decorative wall
for the Meditation Garden, purchase a platelet-testing device, and help support the Patient Special Needs Fund and the Wellness
Coaching Program.
The Jean & Joan Fund Golf Tournament has contributed over $300,000 to the Tunnell Cancer Center since its inception.

Progress for Prostate Charity Golf Tournament
July 15, 2010
Cripple Creek Golf and Country Club’s Progress for Prostate Charity Golf Tournament was established by a group of individuals
who wanted to focus attention on prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in American men,
other than skin cancer. Early detection is the key to combating this disease.
Progress for Prostate Charity Golf Tournament has contributed over $143,000 to help Beebe Medical Center provide free prostate
screenings and community awareness programs.

Take Precautions for
a Safe and Healthy
Winter Season
The majority of flu and pneumonia cases in the Mid-Atlantic
Region occur during January and February. There also is an
increase in the frequency of Emergency Room visits during
the winter months due to back strains and chest pains from
overexertion.

driveway, have medications available, and keep enough food and water
in case of a power outage
• Keep a list of emergency numbers
• Dress warmly
• D o not overexert yourself by shoveling snow when you don’t normally do
that kind of strenuous exercise
• T ake precautions against slipping or falling when walking outdoors
