George Mason University’s Professional Certificate in Facility
Management provides you with the knowledge and strategies for
success in the facility management field through a comprehensive
program designed to help you achieve your professional goals.
You can earn a professional certificate from George Mason
University and prepare for the International Facility Management
Association (IFMA) Certified Facility Manager (CFM) credential
at the same time. For those working in the federal government, the
program provides a foundation to address the core competencies
identified in the Federal Building Personnel Training Act (FBPTA).

omprehensive curriculum covers theory, methodology,
technology, and best practices related to Facility Management
• Students may select coursework to align with the 11 core
competency areas designated by IFMA or the FBPTA.

• Students are awarded a Professional Certificate in Facility
Management after the successful completion of 10 courses.
• Classroom-based, instructor-led courses use a variety of
delivery methods.

The George Mason University Professional Certificate in Facility
Management advances excellence in the education and practice
of facility management and is closely aligned with the core
competencies resulting from IFMA’s global job task analysis. The
George Mason certificate program is an excellent preparation
for IFMA’s CFM exam.
George Mason University is a licensed
education provider for IFMA’s FMP and
SFP Credential Programs.
Some of the courses in the IFMA Credential Programs may be
substituted for courses in the Professional Certificate in
Facility Management. See Certificate Requirements for details.

CORE COURSES (All Six Required)
FM 0226 Real Estate and Lease Management
Studies the process by which commercial real property assets are acquired and disposed.
Examines requirement statements, property alternatives, and managing brokers, developers,
landlords, and lenders. Lease content is emphasized from the tenant’s point of view but the
responsibilities of lessors are also presented.
FM 0100 Principles of Facility Management
Examines the philosophy, definitions, history and functions of contemporary facility
management. Briefly examines all facility management functions.
FM 0300 Future Issues in Facility Management
Examines work, economic, and cultural trends that are changing and will likely impact facility
management in the future. Looks at new building technologies and service provision techniques.
FM 0110 Facility Planning, Design, and
Construction Management
Examines both the macro and micro level of facility planning. Studies the link between
business planning and the planning of facilities. Discusses space management and available
technologies. Studies how to manage churn. Examines the role of facility standards and the
design cycle from needs analysis through design approval and discusses how to manage
design professionals.
FM 0310 FM Technology and Standards
Examines the pros and cons of various technology applications and provides the tools to
help FMs make better data-driven decisions regarding facilities. Reviews the importance of
standards such as BIM and new date migration processes, including COBie, to optimize the
performance of FM technologies. Emphasizes the use of technology to promote the facility
management department as a business unit.
Course Descriptions
FM 0115 Operations and Maintenance Management
Discusses the formulation and execution of an annual work plan. Examines technologies
available to manage work and building operations. Focuses on developing a comprehensive
maintenance and repair program. Examines the relationship between alterations and
maintenance/repair.
FM 0200 Communications for the Facility Manager
Discusses communications opportunities and problems unique to facility management.
Provides each student with an evaluation of their capabilities as a communicator. Students
make both an information and an expository presentation and write typical business
communications. Stresses communication with customers and the language of business.
FM 0205 Facility Financial Management
Studies tying company/agency business planning to facility business planning. Develops, in
depth, the relationship between strategic and annual planning with the budget. Discusses
benchmarks, cost comparators, charge backs/allocations, value engineering, and capital
budget justification/prioritization techniques.
FM 0220 Leadership, Management, and the FM Organization
Examines the traditional functions of planning, organizing, staffing, directing, controlling,
and evaluating as they apply to managing a facility department. Stresses the role of behavioral
science in both managing the department and in mission execution. Teaches policy formulation
strategy and execution. Discusses current issues in personnel management.
ELECTIVE COURSES (Choose Four)
FM 0224 Project Management
Reviews the management of major facility projects; capital, major alteration, relocation, and
major repair and replacement. Particular emphasis is on project budget, maintaining schedules,
and team building from the perspective of a facility manager. Manual and automated project
management systems are discussed.
FM 0225 Environmental Health and Safety Issues
Discusses the safety and environmental responsibilities of facility managers and how to
minimize risk. Provides an understanding of the major applicable regulations, regulatory
implications, and how to best manage them.
FM 0320 FM Performance Measurement AND Improvement
Teaches a practical method to measure effectiveness, efficiency and response of all facility
services and to evaluate performance over time. Discusses the proper use of metrics and
means of measuring customer opinion of services.
FM 0401 Emergency Preparedness for Facility Managers
Examines Emergency Preparedness at both a macro and micro level, from planning for an
emergency through recovering from disasters. Discusses how to design and establish a
solid, effective disaster prevention and relief strategy for all types of facilities. Focuses on
identifying types of emergencies and the resources needed to combat them; planning and
organizing to respond to the emergencies; preparing and rehearsing emergency plans;
training and finally, capturing valuable lessons from each event.
SUSB 0400 Sustainability for Existing Buildings O&M (LEED)
The non-credit Professional Certificate in Sustainability for Existing Buildings focuses on the
importance of sustainability in the operation of existing buildings. This program specifically
focuses on the principles of Sustainable Facility Management (SFM) and incorporates the
key operational characteristics of building rating systems such as Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design (LEED) EB for Operations and Maintenance. Certificate courses are
specifically designed to prepare participants for professional accreditation by U.S. Green
Building Council (USGBC as either LEED-GA (Green Associate) and LEED-AP (Accredited
Professional).

Credential Program
The IFMA SFP Credential Program will provide you with the tools to enhance your sustainability knowledge. In this three module program, you will learn to integrate sustainability
efforts with the values and strategies of your organization. Become a leader in creating,
managing, and operating sustainable facilities across the FM spectrum.

private industry, and facility management consulting
