CWP Summer Success Academy Stump Speech Campaign Platform Presentation Part 2. Campaign Stump Speech: This persuasive speech will be at least 3:30 minutes and no longer than 5. It will be on one of the social issue topics. In this speech you will outline your position on the topic. Paying special attention to the balance of how your position supports either the common good or individual rights and freedoms. The speech should be well practiced, and rehearsed. It does not need to be 100% memorized, but it also should not be read 100% word for word. The speech should be a campaign style rally speech, short on specific details, but hitting key talking points and energizing supporters who agree with you on the topic. Following the speech you will answer 1-3 questions from Mr. Davolt in a mini debate style back and forth. Be prepared for Mr. Davolt to play Devils Advocate and to challenge you on your issue. You will need to turn in either the full text of the speech or the bullet points/notes you used to give the speech. Possible Speech Topics: Food Stamps/ Social Safety Net Education: either K-12 or Higher Education Healthcare Immigration Environment and Energy Rubric for Speech 4 3 2 1 Thesis and Clarity Student has a clear grasp of the topic Social Issue The social issue is fully discussed with a specific policy proposal. Includes a partial discussion of problems, and policy solutions to deal with the country in question. The social issue is partially discussed and or the specific policy proposal is incomplete. Includes an incomplete discussion of problems, and policy solutions to deal with the country in question. Discussion of social issue is incomplete and the specific policy proposal is missing. Presentation Student is prepared and well rehearsed; time is filled completely with relevant information. Student seems prepared but needs more practice for a polished presentation. The student is somewhat prepared but it is clear that rehearsal is lacking. Questions Student is able to fully respond and retort to the three questions proposed. Student is able to partially answer the three questions. One question is not able to be fully answered. Either problems or policy solutions to the problems to deal with the country in question is completely left out. Either discussion of social issue or specific policy proposal is completely missing or incomplete. Student does not seem at all prepared to present. Student fumbles over word choice and pronunciation. More than one of the questions is not able to be fully answered. If Presentation is not completed to standard then presentation will need to be repeated. Mr. Davolt will be happy to assist you in research and background on any and all of the topics. It is strongly suggested that you practice your speech prior to delivering it. Standards Mastered With Completion Civics: Evaluate democratic ideals and realities in the political system of the United States and describe how effectively this system promotes the common good while protecting individual rights. Evaluate how individual rights and the common good are influenced by national governments and international organizations. History: Create an informed decision on a current issue based on an analysis of history. Skills: Evaluate a historical or current topic to determine research questions and where/how to find information to answer the questions. Participate in discussions of public issues, evaluate others’ positions, and then decide to change or solidify their own position. Evaluate positions and evidence to make their own decisions in a paper or presentation.
