UTILITY WORKER I
DEFINITION
Under close supervision, receives training and performs a variety of work involved in the installation, operation, repair,
and maintenance of water and sewer systems and associated apparatus and equipment; and performs related work as
required.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
One year of full-time construction or general trades experience related to the maintenance of water and sewer system
facilities; OR any equivalent combination of training and experience. See license section for additional requirements.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE
A valid Driver’s License.
A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with an endorsement for hazardous materials must be obtained
within six months of hire.
Selected applicants will be required to submit to a urine drug screen at the time they obtain a CDL and they are
required to operate vehicles requiring possession of a CDL. Employees with CDL’s in this class will also be subject to
drug testing under the following conditions: reasonable cause, post -accident, random, return to duty, and follow-up.
Must obtain a Nevada water distribution certificate level D-1 as set forth in NAC 445A.633 within one year of hire.
Must obtain a Nevada water distribution certificate level D-2 as set forth in NAC 445A.633 within two years of hire
in order to be promoted to Utility Worker II. Failure to achieve the Nevada water distribution level D-2 within two
years may result in termination of employment.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry-level class for the Utility Worker class series. Incumbents receive training and provide assistance
with the installation of water and sewer systems owned and operated by Washoe County. Assignments are performed
under the close supervision of a Utility Worker Supervisor. This class is distinguished from Utility Worker II by
performing assignments under closer supervision, a more limited range of duties, and less skill in the operation of
equipment.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (The following is used as a partial description and is not restrictive as to duties required.)
Learn and perform basic assignments in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water and sewer systems and
components, including storage tanks, water meters, treatment facilities, pipes, fittings, valves, gauges, pumps, and
filters.
Learn and perform checking of lines for leaks.
Learn and perform checking of flow rates with gauging meter.
Assist professional staff with testing and special projects.
Learn and perform the installation, maintenance, and repair of chlorine injection systems.
Learn procedures and maintain data on changes, repairs, and installations.
Learn to update utility maps, including the location of water mains, sewer mains, and appurtenances.
Check water levels of wells.
Read meters.
Check on customer complaints and reports, reporting findings to others for follow-up calls.
Learn and perform the construction and adaptation of devices according to designs prepared by professional staff.
Flush hydrants and water lines.
Learn to collect water samples for laboratory analysis.
Learn to use, repair, and perform safety checks on a variety tools and equipment.
Learn procedures and respond to hazardous material leaks and spills.
Receive training to operate dump truck and backhoe.
May be required to be on standby and respond to emergency calls during off duty hours.

Knowledge of:
Departmental/division policies and procedures.
Methods, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance, repair, and installation of water and sewer systems.
Safety methods and procedures used by the Utility Division.
Methods and procedures used in sample collection.
Ability to:
Perform a variety of installation, operation, repair, and maintenance work on water and sewer systems.
Calculate volume, weights, and measures pertaining to the public water system.
Operate the equipment used in the installation, operation, repair, and maintenance of water and sewer systems.
Read manuals, blueprints, drawings, and maps.
Effectively represent the Utility Division when responding to customer inquiries and complaints.
Entry Level (Applicants will be screened for possession of these through written, oral, performance, or other
evaluation methods.)
Knowledge of:
Methods, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and construction trades.
General safety methods and procedures.
Ability to:
Learn the methods, materials, and equipment used in the installation, operation, repair, and maintenance of water and
sewer systems.
Perform heavy physical labor.
Use a variety of hand and power tools.
Follow oral and written instructions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment.
Ability to frequently stand and walk. Ability to stoop, kneel, or crouch to pick up or move objects. Ability to walk on
sloped ground and uneven surfaces. Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 100 lbs with assistance. Normal
manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Ability to work outdoors in varying temperatures, weather, and humidity
conditions. Ability to work in a noisy, dirty, and damp environment. Ability to work with exposure to fumes, smoke,
gasses, solvents, chemicals, pesticides, dust, and silica. Ability to work on ladders and/or scaffolding. Ability to work
in confined spaces.
