Swedish Automotive Industry
propelled by innovation
65 000
automotive industry jobs are
within the supplier chain.
110 000
people employed within the
Swedish automotive industry.*
2
(* directly employed)
3
500 000
jobs are generated indirectly by
the automotive industry.
4
5
150
billion is the export value of the
Swedish automotive industry.
This figure corresponds to 12 percent of
the country’s total export and was the single largest industry. Sweden is therewith
one of the countries in the world that is
most dependent on its automotive industry for employment and export revenues.
From an international perspective
Sweden is unique with four* car manufacturers that carry on both manufacturing
and development. Two of the world’s
largest manufacturers of heavy vehicles,
Volvo Trucks and Scania, are based in the
6
country along with Volvo Car Corporation
and Saab Automobile*.
The companies constitute an important
part of industry and commerce and
significantly impact Sweden’s economic
growth. The automotive industry has a
high share of export and of the combined
manufacturing, including manufacturing
abroad, approximately 85 percent of passenger cars and a just over 95 percent of
heavy vehicles are manufactured outside
of Sweden. (*At the time of publishing)
7
340
suppliers within the automotive industry
are represented by the Scandinavian
branch organisation FKG.
75
Suppliers carry out 75 percent
of a car’s refinement.
8
FKG was established in 1984.
9
FKG develops
its members
FKG contributes to the development of members
that supplies the automotive industry by:
• Acting as the organisation’s mouthpiece towards
industry, politicians, authorities and media.
• Creating meeting places in order to increase information, reinforce relations between suppliers and to
create opportunities for growth.
• Initiating activities to enhance competence.
10 11
Mouthpiece:
a responsible function
Many meeting places
reinforce relationships
FKG works continuously to improve the
industry’s business conditions. This takes
place in contact with the government,
parliament, trade and commerce organisations, research institutes, universities etc.
FKG also collaborates with other industries, organisations and temporary projects. Organisations are often proposed
for consideration.
• FKG creates various forums where
supplier companies can both partake
of important current information in
order to make strategic decisions and
gain the opportunity for common
discussions.
An important role for FKG is to have contact with media and provide information
12 about the suppliers’ situation. FKG is consistently consulted when special events
occur within the industry.
FKG publishes the magazine The Vehicle
Component five times per year and has
a circulation of approximately 4 000. It
contains the Automotive Technical
Association members’ magazine SVEN.
An information newsletter in email
format is distributed approximately five to
six times per month.
• Each year FKG arranges the Annual
Suppler Forum. On the agenda are
primarily current issues that concern
the automotive industry and related
organisations.
• FKG arranges meeting places to help
members develop business and
create growth. An example of this is
gathering booths at important supplier trade fairs.
• FKG also arranges business meetings
between members, car manufacturers and suppliers in other countries
under the umbrella name Go Global.
13
FKG develops
competence of
its members
• FKG carries out common branch
seminars within various areas like
financing, quality, contract law,
negotiation techniques, and industrial
finance.
• FKG analyses and comments on current issues so that its members gain
better understanding of contracts, to
be able to provide qualified acceptances etc.
• FKG is contracting party in the joint financed automotive research program
14 with manufacturers and government
authorities. The on-going program is
called FFI – Strategic Vehicle Research
and Innovation. FKG supports suppliers to formulate projects, apply for
funding and start projects.
• FKG carries out a profitability analysis
each year of the entire branch and
when required also examines the
state of the market, material price
development etc. Structure surveys
are also carried out on a regular basis.
15
FKG’s initiative
for the future
Clepa
– European Association
of Automotive Suppliers
FKG has formulated the branch initiative Swedish Automotive Industry
Propelled by Innovation. The initiative is based on the following grounds:
FKG is a member of the European supplier organisation Clepa, with its head office in Brussels. FKG utilises
this network in order to create contacts and reinforce
the Scandinavian suppliers’ position.
• Collaboration between parties with similar agendas.
• The right conditions for the industry.
• The automotive industry is important for the development of high technological
development and is not special interest.
• Understanding that the automotive industry accounts for sustainable growth
and development of society.
• More suppliers that carry out research and development.
• Investment in engineering competence in society.
• A trade policy that provides competitive neutrality.
• Working infrastructure for both passenger and goods transports.
• Forum for concerned parties to create common views, political dialog and an
innovation fuelled think tank.
16 Clepa’s strength as an organisation comes partially
from the network of large global supplier companies
and in part from the national or regional branch
organisations. The big companies provide Clepa with
leverage in its contacts with the car manufacturers.
The many medium-large companies, represented by
its branch organisations, provide Clepa with legitimacy with the EU.
17
12
Membership
