Company Overview
The largest program of the San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC) is the federally funded Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8)
program, which provides rental assistance for more than 14,000 low-income households in the City of San Diego. Since 1979,
SDHC has administered this program on behalf of the U.S. department of Housing and Urban Development. SDHC also helps
Housing Choice Voucher participants achieve greater financial independence by providing programs at the SDHC Achievement
Academy that emphasize career planning, job skills and personal financial education.
In addition, SDHC is an award-winning public agency that serves the City of San Diego in a variety of roles, including as a
lender and development partner to create and preserve affordable housing and a partner and provider of housing to address
homelessness.
Since 2012, SDHC has directed, invested, and committed a combined total of more than $27 million toward addressing
homelessness in the City of San Diego. SDHC’s homelessness programs include administering the City of San Diego’s
homeless shelters for single adults, veterans and families, and awarding federal housing vouchers to nonprofit organizations
and developments to make housing available for homeless individuals.
Department Overview
The Human Resources department provides strategic guidance in talent acquisition and management through fair and open
recruiting, performance management, employee and labor relations; organizational development & training, safety/wellness; and
employee information management processes and procedures. In addition, the HR department ensures compliance with
employment laws; manages benefits and partners with management staff of the Commission.
Internship Overview
Duties and Responsibilities: Assist in entering personnel transaction into HRB database; assist in collecting information for
benefits Open Enrollment; conduct new hire and benefits orientation; provide support in benefits/safety/recruitment/training;
update email templates; makes sure all HR forms are on SmartHub; provide support for special projects.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience: Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel. Use English effectively to communicate
in person, over the telephone, and in writing. Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing
with the public, vendors, contractors, and Commission staff. Business mathematics and basic statistical techniques. Ability to
maintain confidentiality of sensitive personal information of applicants, employees, former employees, and other matters
affecting employee relations. Ability to organize and prioritize a variety of projects and multiple tasks in an effective and timely
manner; organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines.
Qualifications and Requirements: Full- time enrolled students must be junior, senior or graduate level with a minimum
GPA of 2.0 and not graduating before December 2014. Students must attend UCSD, USD, PLNU, SDSU or CSU San Marcos to
qualify. Packets include the following and must be complete for consideration:

date (verification forms may be requested from the Office of the Registrar at your university).

Work Hours: Interns are not to exceed 20 hours per week and are under Agreement with the San Diego Housing Commission
for a period of one year. The Housing Commission works a Compressed Work Schedule (CWS) whereby all employees create a
schedule within the Agency’s core hours, 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, and work the same days and share the same day off. Our offices
are closed every other Friday.
Note: Internship offers are contingent upon successfully completing the pre-employment process including back ground check
and drug screen.
Hourly Rate: $15
