Egg Lab: Lab Report
This lab will be graded as a TEST Grade!
Please use the following rubric as a checklist when doing your lab report.
Heading: Name, Date, Period, Title of Lab (using the Independent and
Dependent Variables)
(8 pts.) Purpose - Briefly explain the purpose of this lab. In doing so,
explain what an egg is (in terms of cells.) Include the purpose of the shell,
and explain what diffusion and osmosis are, and how they relate to the
egg’s cell membrane.
(2 pts.) Problem Questions (5) – Questions given before you changed each
of the solutions.
(4 pts.) Hypotheses (5) – Your predictions to answer the questions in the
“If . . . then . . .” format
(2 pts.) Materials – List, no specific order
(0 pts.) Procedure - Refer to Procedure posted in room. (You do NOT have
to re-write the procedure here.)
(10 pts.) Data Table – If data table used in class is neat (ruler) and
legible, you do not have to re-do. Include data for vinegar, colored water,
salt water, clear water, & solution of choice. Make sure you have recorded
units for measurement, and measured to the nearest tenth. Data table
should include observations. Observations should be clear & concise (color,
texture, anything else you noticed.)
(16 pts.) Graphs – Using line graphs, first graph the circumference of
egg. X-axis should be labeled Day 1, 2, & 3 etc. Y-axis should be labeled
circumference in (cm). Second graph should plot mass (g) and days. See
*Graph Rules!
(50 pts.) Conclusion (Use outline and/Graphic Organizer to help organize
everything that must be addressed in the conclusion.)
(2 pts) Collapse all 5 questions from the beginning into one question.
(28 pts) Answer the questions from the lab addressing each of the
different solutions in separate paragraphs, backing up your answer with
data (your measurements of the egg and changes in the volumes of your
solutions) collected during the lab using complete sentences. (What effect
did the different solutions have on the egg’s size? You should also mention
what effect vinegar had on the egg’s shell.)
(12 pts) Include in the above explanation in which direction each solution
diffused through the egg (into or out of the egg through the cell
membrane.) After each answer, tell whether or not (in a complete sentence)
if your hypothesis was supported.
(6 pts.) Explain any difficulties you had with the lab. You cannot say that
you didn’t have any difficulties. Do you think your data was different from
others? Do you think you measured accurately? Give examples . . . Lastly,
how could you improve the experiment?
(2 pts) Finally, answer the following questions in complete sentences: 1.)
In knowing what you do about which direction water flowed into your egg
cell, why do you think grocery stores spray their vegetables with water as it
relates to osmosis/diffusion?
2.) Keeping in mind what happened to your egg cell when you placed it in salt
water, why could someone die if they were stranded at sea and drank
seawater (relating to osmosis or diffusion)?
The conclusion should be written in paragraph form using complete
sentences.
(2 pts.) Have your work checked for spelling and grammar.
(2 pts) Typed in 12-14 font, or neatly hand written in blue or black ink.
(4 pts.) The lab must be in the order as outlined here in the rubric.
Each section of the lab needs to be titled and there should be a space
between each section.
