Advanced Placement Chemistry · 2011 Summer Assignment
Mr. David Arvizu · Central High School East · Room 1504
darvizu@centralusd.k12.ca.us
Thank you for choosing to enroll in AP Chemistry. I look forward to a great year of
chemistry. In order to ensure the best start for everyone next fall, I have prepared a
summer assignment that reviews basic chemistry concepts. To complete the required
summer assignment you will need to obtain following textbooks from the CHSE library:
•
•
Chemistry by Zumdahl and Zumdahl (7th ed.)
Student Solutions Guide to accompany Chemistry by Hummel, Zumdahl
and Zumdahl (7th ed.)
Pick up the following resource from Mr. Arvizu in Room 1504 prior to leaving for summer
break.
• Chemistry Study Guide by Zumdahl, Zumdahl and Kelter
Summer assignment:
The summer assignment is a required component of the course and is due at the
beginning of the first class of the fall term. Remember, more important than simply
doing the assignment, is that you actually understand the concepts. The solutions
guide, study guide and internet resources are there to help you in this process.
Answer the Review Questions in complete sentences. Use flash cards to help you
with the memorization of ions. Please do not put it off until the last minute. Testing on
this assignment will take place shortly after we return from summer break.
1. Concepts in Chemistry
A. Chapter 1: Chemical Foundations
i. Read Chapter 1: Measuring techniques, factor-label method for conversions,
significant figures
ii. Chapter 1 Homework: Review Questions: pages 29-30 (1-10); Exercises (28,
30, 32, 36, 46, 49, 53, 60, 61, 63, 67, 70, 71)
B. Chapter 2: Atoms, molecules and ions
i. Read Chapter 2: Atoms, ions, periodic table, valences, writing formulas and
naming compounds (nomenclature)
ii. Chapter 2 Homework: Review Questions: pages 68-69 (1-10); Exercises (28,
31, 33, 50, 64, 66, 70, 72, 73, 75, 76, 80, 82)
C. Chapter 3: Stoichiometry
i. Read Chapter 3: Counting by weighing, the mole, Avogadro's number,
percent composition, empirical formulas, balancing equations, limiting reagent
ii. Chapter 3 Homework: Review Questions 1-10; p. 114-115; Exercises (27, 32,
50, 62, 64, 68, 69, 76, 80, 83, 84)
DUE THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED
2. Memorization and Naming (Chapter 2)
Chemistry is not all about memorization, however having these items memorized is
essential for success in learning the concepts covered in the course. Make flash
cards, have your friends and family quiz you, take the lists with you on vacation, or
do whatever it takes to get this information firmly planted in your head. These same
techniques will help with naming as well, but make sure not to just memorize the
naming rules, instead put the rules into actual practice. Do not wait until the week
before school begins.
