Course Title: Chemistry Grade Level: 11th – 12th (elective course) Credit: 1 Prerequisites: Physical Science and biology Course Description: Chemistry is the study of matter, its composition and structure, and the changes it undergoes. The course is divided into the following sections: 1. Introduction to chemistry and matter. Subject areas covered include: organization of matter, the structure and properties of atoms, the periodic law and the organization of the periodic table. 2. Chemical compounds. Subject areas covered include: Types of chemical compounds, naming and writing chemical compounds, and chemical equations and reactions. 3. States of matter. Subject areas covered include: The 3 states of matter, the forces that hold matter together, and solutions. 4. Different fields of chemistry. Subject areas covered include: Acids and bases, organic chemistry, biological chemistry, and nuclear chemistry. Many hands-on lab activities are conducted. Instructional Objectives: Students will be introduced to chemistry through the periodic law; properties and structural characteristics of matter; the interactions between matter; the writing and naming of chemical formulas and equations; and to use the scientific method to investigate and solve problems in science.
