The following is a brief account of the proceedings at the AGM held on May 4, 2012 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 655 Burrard
Street, Vancouver, BC
The 2012 annual general meeting of the VRABC society was called to order by Shelley Rose, Chairperson and President.

The minutes from the 2011 AGM were read and approved by the members present. The following reports were submitted and voted as accepted:

The financial report was reviewed and a motion went to the floor to accept the report as written and was seconded.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

President of VRA Canada BC Society
Welcome to the AGM for VRA Canada BC Society. This past Board year has been full of the unexpected, we started the board year with a full board, new directors eager to learn and become involved. Unfortunately some of our board members needed to step back due to other commitments and therefore our board has been reduced. I would like to thank my fellow board members for their support and assistance during the year of change. Additionally I would like to thank those members (Non board) who frequently offered their assistance and time. VRA Canada BC has amazing members and I thank you all for your continued support.
Highlights from 2012/2013:
1. We have entered Social Media arena: check us out on Facebook. For the coming board year we have exciting news: A newsletter (hopefully you have all received your on-line copy) this will be a quarterly newsletter about VRA Canada
BC Society, (up to date news, where are they now articles)
2. Education: there were will two webinars offered this coming board year plus an Education/Training Day in combination with the AGM. It will be a great opportunity for networking amongst your peers and industry providers.
3. Fiscal Responsibility: The treasurer’s report plus the review outline all monies and expenditures for the last board year. As members you need to review this information and if there are any questions or clarification needed please contact myself or the Treasurer and we will respond.
Following through on the last years report, succession planning for future Boards would be easier with commitment from volunteers, this would make the transition smoother with a less steep learning curve for those who are interested in joining. The most recent mentoring was with our outgoing Treasurer, Brian and incoming treasurer Maggie. Brian and Maggie worked closely together in order to pass on institutional knowledge and ease Maggie into the role. Thank you Brian and
Maggie, we can see that your commitment has paid off.
Since the last AGM we have been involved in defining ways to connect with our members, taking into consideration how busy they already are. Our intention is to provide Professional Development both cost and time effectively for all of our BC members, so watch this space for more updates.
This past year the Board have been involved in assisting VRA Canada with planning for the National conference. We are honored that it is being held here in Vancouver this year and hope to see many new and old faces.
Moving forward we must not forget that VRA BC got where it is today through the dedication and commitment by many of your past Board members. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has volunteered their time and efforts in previous years. I would also like to recognize two Board members who are unfortunately no longer with us; our thoughts are with their families:

In closing I would ask that new and experienced members alike consider volunteering this upcoming year. There are many exciting things on the horizon for VRA BC and we would very much like our membership to share in these exciting times.

TREASURER'S REPORT —For the Year Ending December 31, 2012

Treasurer
The annual Financial Statements report was done in keeping with generally accepted accounting principles and indicates that the Society’s financial statements are an accurate representation of the Society’s financial position and that the Society enjoys a healthy financial position.
Finance
The fiscal year of 2012 shows a deficit in the amount of $135. Net assets for 2012 are $187,787 going forward into 2013.
The Balance Sheet
The Balance Sheet is a report about the Societies’ financial life since the day it began and about its current financial position.
The Society holds assets of $191,286 consisting of $129,022 in cash, $56,250 in term deposits, $5202 in accounts receivables and $812 in a tax rebate which will be received during the 2013 fiscal year.
The Societies liabilities as of December 31, 2012 were $3499 leaving net assets of $187,787.
There have been no cash flow problems for VRA BC Society this year.
The Income Statement
This Income Statement reports information about revenue and expenses for the fiscal year being reported on; in this case
2012. The Societies Operating revenue as stated in this report was $54,066 with expenses of $54,201 for 2012 resulting in a deficit of $135 as described above in the Finance section.
Comments
I am stepping down as Treasurer for VRA BC. I came onto the board at the Victoria national conference in 2008.
I would like to welcome Maggie Welton who is the incoming Treasurer. I am confident she will do a great job.
Going forward in 2013 and 2014 funds will be allocated for initiatives to engage the VRA BC membership.
At the center of these initiatives will be the recently upgraded VRA BC website www.vracanadabc.ca which is also mobile friendly.
Upcoming webinars will provide affordable continuing education units to the membership throughout the province and a source of revenue to cover the costs of production.
The AGM training day in 2014 will be a live event, the location to be determined.
In closing, the board needs your assistance whether for a time limited project or as a new director in achieving its goals, so why not get involved.

These standards were applied retrospectively by management to the comparative information in these financial statements, operations, changes in net assets and cash flows for the year ended December 31, 2011 and related disclosures. We were not engaged to report on the restated comparative information, and as such, it is neither audited nor reviewed.

Purpose of the Society
The purpose of the Vocational Rehabilitation Association of Canada - British Columbia Society (the Society) is to:
- Unite those persons engaged in the field of rehabilitation of the disabled and the multi-barriered;
- Represent the interests of members to governments, employers, the news media, and the public;
- Promote and encourage the study of techniques, research, methods and procedures of rehabilitation and to promote the highest professional standards;
- Conduct forums, lectures, seminars, workshops and other projects to educate the members and the public;
- Be a member of the Vocational Rehabilitation Association of Canada;
- Co-operate with governments and with other persons, associations and corporations in the furtherance of these purposes;
- Solicit, collect, receive, acquire, hold and invest money and property, both real and personal, received by gift, contribution, bequest devised, or otherwise, sell and convert property, both real and personal, into cash, and use the funds of the Society and the proceeds, income, and rents derived from any property of the Society in furtherance of the purposes set out above;
- Purchase, lease, sell or hold such property, equipment and materials as are deemed necessary to accomplish the Society's purposes, and
- Do all such things as may be necessary or conducive to the attainment of these purposes.
The Society is a registered society under the Society Act of British Columbia as a not-for-profit organization, and, accordingly, is not subject to income taxes as per subsection 149(1) of the Income Tax Act.
Impact of adopting accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations
These are the Society’s first financial statements prepared in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-forprofit organizations (ASNPO). The accounting policies in Note 3 have been applied in preparing the financial statements for the year ended December 31, 2012, the comparative information for the year ended December 31, 2011, and the opening
ASNPO balance sheet as at January 1, 2011 (the Society’s date of transition to ASNPO).
The transition to ASNPO has not affected the statement of financial position, statement of operations or statement of cash flows previously reported under Canadian generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
Significant accounting policies
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations using the following significant accounting policies:
Revenue recognition
The Society recognizes revenue in the year in which such amounts are receivable. In the case of sponsor fees, revenue is recognized as earned.
Contributed services
The Society and its members benefit from donated services in the form of volunteers. Because of the difficulty of determining their fair value, contributed services are not recognized in the financial statements.
Measurement uncertainty
The preparation of financial statements in conformity with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations requires management to make estimates and assumptions that affect the reported amounts of assets and liabilities and disclosure of contingent assets and liabilities at the date of the financial statements, and the reported amounts of revenues and expenses during the reporting period.
These estimates and assumptions are reviewed periodically and, as adjustments become necessary they are reported in excess of revenues and expenses in the periods in which they become known.

Financial instruments
The Society, as part of its operations, carries a number of financial instruments. It is management's opinion that the Society is not exposed to significant interest, currency, credit, liquidity or other price risks arising from these financial instruments except as otherwise disclosed.
Interest rate risk
Interest rate risk is the risk that the value of a financial instrument might be adversely affected by a change in the interest rates. Changes in market interest rates may have an effect on the cash flows associated with some financial assets and liabilities, known as cash flow risk, and on the fair value of other financial assets or liabilities, known as price risk.
The Society is exposed to interest rate risk with respect to cash and term deposits.
Correction of an error
During the year the Society determined that legal and director expenses from previous fiscal years had not been recognized by the Society in the year the expense had occurred. This error has been corrected in the current year as an adjustment to net assets. The retroactive application of this correction of an error did not have a material impact on the results of operations and financial position of the Society.

Stuart Lee
Stuart has graduated from the University of Victoria with a bachelor degree in Psychology. He is currently a Registered Rehabilitation Professional in good standing with the Vocational Rehabilitation Association of Canada (VRAC) and was elected to the VRAC-BC society board of directors in 2011. Since joining the board, he has been involved with the professional development committee attempting to draw more attention to the North. Stuart has 24 years experience working with people with cognitive disabilities and mental health concerns. He currently provides vocational services to employment service centres throughout Northern BC including Fort Nelson, Fort St. John, and Dawson Creek. Stuart also provides vocational rehabilitation services to various insurers assisting people with injuries return to the workplace.
Nata Richardson, BSc., RRP, CVP
Nata graduated from the University of Northern British Columbia with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She is currently a
Registered Rehabilitation Professional in good standing with the Vocational Rehabilitation Association of Canada (VRAC) and was elected to the VRAC-BC society board of directors in 2011. Nata has been working with person’s with disabilities since
2006. Currently, Nata manages the Individualized Employment Services Program at Employment Action in Prince George which is focused on providing customized employment to people with disabilities. Nata also provides vocational rehabilitation services to Work BC service centers in Dawson Creek, Fort St. John and Fort Nelson.
Audrey Robertson RRP, ATMS
Audrey lives and works in the Fraser Valley. Audrey has been working with her current employer ICBC for over 26 years, and has experience in dealing with Bodily Injury and catastrophic injury files. Audrey entered the Rehabilitation field in 1995. As of December 2010 Audrey has been the Manager of FV Region of Recovery Services for ICBC. Audrey has been involved with
VRABC for many years, starting in the late 1990’s. Since joining the board Audrey has been Treasurer, Secretary, and Vice-
President. Audrey has also been involved in the Professional Development committee, Membership committee. Audrey is a Registered Rehabilitation Professional in good standing with the VRA Canada. Audrey is continues to pursue continuing education as it relates to work.
Brad Swithin, BA, RRP
Brad Swithin currently works as a Vocational Rehabilitation Consultant for WorkSafeBC in the Nanaimo office serving workers in the central Vancouver Island area. Brad holds a Degree in Social Sciences from the University of Victoria and has been involved in vocational services since 2007. He is the most recent addition to the VRA-BC Board having accepted a Director position in the fall of 2011. Brad is committed to the field of vocational rehabilitation and the VRA-BC Board’s ongoing efforts to help shape and guide the profession.

Greg Travers
Greg is an accredited rehabilitation professional and Certified Vocational Professional with over 26 years assisting persons with disabilities. Greg currently works with Canadian Council of Rehabilitation and Work as the coordinator/manager of the office for BC’s Partners for Workplace Inclusion Program. Greg is a avid volunteer within the disable community. Greg was
President of CARP BC Society, 2002-2003-2004, also filled in as treasurer. Long time Advisory member to SFU’s Dip. Program in Rehabilitation Management. He’s an appointed Advisory member on disability issues for the City and District of North
Vancouver and City of West Vancouver. Greg has been for the past two years the Chair of the North Shore Disability Resource
Centre.
Greg has assisted hundreds of individuals with disabilities find and obtained employment, has delivered Workshops to both youths and adults with disabilities.
Greg is also a professional member with the Real Estate Institution of BC and has received an RI designation and is an accredit Real Property Appraiser with the American Society of Appraisers.
Maggie Welton, RRP, CCRC, CDMP, CVRP
Maggie Welton (RRP, CCRC, CDMP, CVRP) is a Quality Client Services Manager (Vocational Rehabilitation) with Worksafe BC.
She has over 30 years in the vocational rehabilitation and case management fields, having worked with several Workers
Compensation Boards, private insurance companies and many employers with a focus on disability management. She has extensive experience with program and policy development, training and curriculum development as well as strategic planning. Maggie joined the VRA Board in 2011 and is looking forward to taking on the role of Treasurer. She is passionate about lifelong learning and believes strongly in “giving back”.
