A SALUTE TO USO’s THEN AND NOW
This is our annual banquet theme with a taste of
World War II-era music, dancing, and patriotic remembrance -
Tuesday, June 5, Town Hall. Social time begins at
6:00 PM ( not 6:30). We will have pianist and karaoke master Michael Purcell (who was at our dinner several years ago). His music will enhance our proud American theme. Wear your old uniform
(if it still fits), your nursing cap, or just wear red, white, and/or blue. You may bring a guest. Zelda Zeh
(zeldazeh@gmail.com, 763-1331) is taking reservations and cataloging what you will bring for dinner. Volunteers needed: contact Debbie
(dparkstudio@yahoo.com, 658-2178) or Kris
(kristin.woodward@earthlink.net, 783-1828).
The Town Hall Exhibit to be held on Wednesday, May 30,
2012 will be judged by two art professors from Sienna
College in Newtonville. The first is Scott Foster, MFA,
Assistant Professor of Creative Arts (Studio Arts) who received his BA in painting, drawing and printmaking from Northwest Nazarene University, and his MFA in painting and drawing from Utah State University where he served as Exhibitions and Visiting Artist Program
Coordinator and a lecturer in the Art Department. The second judge is Liz Blum who is a Visiting Assistant
Professor (Studio Art) from Troy, NY. Ms. Blum attended college in London and received her MFA from the
University at Albany. She is a visual artist who uses storytelling, parody play and humor in her art.
We are deeply appreciative to Alison Lane for her assistant in preparing the show a ND intake, and to
Supervisor Paula Mahan for hosting the reception and taking time to be present for the awards. We are very grateful to the Town of Colonie for its continued support of the CAL in many ways. And, thank you to the many talented members of the this group who participated in the show and the reception.
(Since the winners are not listed until the September newsletter, I will do a brief insert for that newsletter).
Jacqueline Smith
2nd Vice President for Exhibits
The Reception for the annual Pruyn House
Exhibit was held on Sunday, April 1, 2012. On that cloudy day, an appreciative crowd of members and guests were present at the historic Town of Colonie
Cultural Center to view the creative artworks of the
Colonie Art League members.
The forty paintings were judged by Michael
Weidrich, a digital photographer, founder of First
Friday in Albany and a member of Upstate Artist
Guild. He told us about the criteria he uses to judge a painting or photography.
The following artists received ribbons and prize money.

water, open seas, rough open seas, breakers, water and rocks, and most difficult of all to pull off in watercolors, waterfalls. We will also talk about different colors used in various conditions as well as different ways to apply the color. Workshop per day fee anticipated to be about
$65-$68 per day. Please send deposit of $50 payable to
CAL to Kris Woodward, 44 Hoffman drive, Latham,

We have and always will make every effort to refund money on a workshop cancellation as long as we can break even with the workshop. If you cancel and we run in the hole your deposit will not be refunded. Please note that this has been a totally uncommon occurrence in the last 20 years but we’ve come very close of late and decided we should follow the lead of all the other workshops nationally.
St. Matthew’s Church in Latham ($3 donation,) open to all CAL members. Enjoy a full day of painting with friends. Come any time after 9am and bring your smile, lunch, and art supplies. No lessons, just shared comments by other artists.
Call Kris (461-2809) the first time you come.
The Board has worked diligently during the past year to be conservative in spending while at the same time providing CAL members with multiple and varied opportunities to develop their artistic capabilities and supporting the community. We have been successful and have ended April, 2012 with a
$4,500 net balance. With some bills yet to pay, we expect to end with a positive balance. It was a good year.

CAL Scholarship Winners
Liana Pangburn and Arnela Mahmutovic photo: Jim Comly
This is where your donations go! Every year, the
Colonie Art League presents two high school seniors with a scholarship award. The two students are chosen by the art departments of the two Colonie schools: South Colonie High School and Shaker
High School (North Colonie). This year, the presentations were made on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at the monthly Colonie Art League meeting held at the
Colonie Town Hall. The presentations were made by
Marion Greenberg, Scholarship Chairman. Each student received a check in the amount of $500.00.
The winner from South Colonie High School was
Arnela Mahmutovic. Arnela plans on attending
Hudson Valley Community College in the fall. Her family came to this country as refugees from Bosnia and with the support of her parents was able to pursue her passion in art. As an elementary school student, she was able to participate in the Colonie
3
Art League’s summer program at the Pruyn House – an experience, she claims was pivotal in her art education. Her art teacher from South Colonie,
Thomasa Nielson, accompanied her to the presentation.
Liana Pangburn was the winner from Shaker High
School. Liana is planning on attending the
University of Hartford in the fall. Shaker High
School District Art Supervisor Anne Manzella, art teacher, Paul Aubin and Liana’s parents accompanied
Liana to the presentation. Both students brought and presented samples of their artwork, commented on their relevance and planned on continuing art classes at the University level. And special thanks to Teacher Thomasa Nielson…she won the $71.00
50/50 raffle and then donated it back to the
Scholarship fund. Thanks, too, to Marion
Greenberg for pulling all this together.
To Lise Toch and to our sunshine gal Peggy
Ferguson ….(on her second carpal tunnel surgery).
And many thanks to these fellow members who helped put together the mailing of the last few newsletters:
Monique Cunningham, Dan Dunham, Peggy
Ferguson, Annis Knakal, Carol Marchewka,
Carol Meisel, Marilyn Merrill, Sharon Pape,
Debbie Park-Boussu, Anita Patka, Bob Renner,
Mary Woessner, and Kris Woodward.
The Board would like to thank Lorenz Worden for assuming Sue Miller’s role as Secretary while Sue was studying in Italy for 3.5 months. She’s
BAAAAACK! Thanks to Robert Carsten for not only a wonderful workshop and meeting demo…but also for his kind donation of a print with proceeds going to the scholarship fund.
Our heartfelt thank you to Barbara Sekellick for the donation of art materials belonging to the late and wonderful Dan Sekellick . Dan was a previous member of CAL and continued to be a tireless volunteer. His legacy goes on to the children's program.
Thank you to Debbie Park Boussu for stepping up to the plate and raising the most Scholarship money from 50/50 raffles we’ve ever had.
To Lise Toch for her taking on Membership chair last December. Because of illness, Lise will have to slow down on her participation...but as soon as she's back on her feet.....
Special thanks to Barbara Cozzens for jumping in as Membership Chair.
We've not thanked Jim Comly of late for being our official photographer and his being sure to send every demonstrator or workshop person copies of their event. Thanks Jim.
Kris Woodward was accepted in the Northeast
National Pastel Exhibition in Old Forge. Kris also received an award.
Jacqueline Smith will be showing oil and pastel paintings at the Voorheesville Public Library in the month of July (3-31) and at the Bethlehem Public
Library in October on the Delaware Avenue side.
