Academic Policy Overview
General Degree Requirements
All degree programs in the College of Arts and
Sciences and the School of Business now require
128 credits for completion. The Stetson University
Catalog, which includes a detailed look at the
components of all undergraduate and graduate
programs, can be found at http://catalog.stetson.edu.
Waitlist
If a course is closed but seats are available on the
waitlist, you will be offered the option to add
yourself to the waitlist and see your position on that
waitlist. If you are on a waitlist and are offered a seat
in a closed course, you are notified through your
Stetson email address that you are eligible to enroll
in the course. You have 24 hours from the time the
email is register for the course. If you do not register
for the course in this time frame, your seat will be
given to the next person on the waitlist. You can
only waitlist for one section at time. You will have
to drop the current section on which you are
waitlisted before you can add a different section to
waitlist. You cannot waitlist on a section that has a
time conflict with a course on your schedule.

Add/Drop
*Students may not drop FSEM or ENGL 100/101.
The exact dates for each term’s add/drop period are
published in the Academic Calendar on the
Registrar’s webpage.

m
Course Exclusion
*Cannot be used for First-year Seminar or in last
semester before graduation. A student may elect
(with Dean approval) to have the grade and the
credit earned, or attempted in the case of failure, for
one course excluded from credit toward graduation
and the GPA calculation. An excluded course, with
the grade earned, will remain on the transcript and
be designated as “E” or “Excluded from GPA.” This
may result in having to take additional courses to
meet graduation requirements. Although an excluded
course will not affect a student’s cumulative GPA,
the grade received and associated credits will be
calculated for GPA to determine graduation honors.
A student must declare a course for exclusion after
the grade for the course has been posted and no later
than the last day of class of the next regular semester
of enrollment (excluding summers). A student
choosing the Course Exclusion option must do so
through the completion of a Course Exclusion form
in the Office of the Registrar. Dean approval is
required.

m
Pass/Fail Option
Most Stetson University courses award grades at the
end of the course using a scale of A through F. Some
regularly offered courses are credited on a Pass/Fail
basis. Click on the link below for specific details of
the policy. Many exemptions apply.

Retaking a Course
*Students cannot retake a First-Year Seminar. You
are generally allowed to retake a course that you
received a failing grade in: F, WF (from a late
withdrawal), or XF (from a late drop). The one
exception to this is that you are not allowed to retake
your First-Year Seminar. You will need to contact
the Registrar's Office prior to registering for the
course that you intend to retake so that they may
enter an override into the registration system for
you. Both the failing grade and the new grade will
appear on your transcripts. Unless you use the
Course Exclusion option, both grades will be used in
calculating your cumulative GPA. You are allowed
to retake a course that you received a passing grade
in and that you have applied the Course Exclusion
option to. Grades from both attempts will appear on
your transcript, but only the second grade will be
used to calculate your cumulative GPA. This does
not count toward the limit of one passed course that
may be retaken.
Only under special circumstances, you may
retake one course in which you have earned a
passing grade. An example of when it would be
appropriate to request this option is if you have
earned a very low grade in a course in your major
that is a prerequisite for other courses in the
major. The low grade indicates a lack of mastery,
and so you are not adequately prepared to be
successful in the later courses. Stetson defines the
Academic Policy Overview
grade of C as certification that the student has
demonstrated the required mastery of the
material, so permission will generally not be
granted if a grade of C or higher was initially
earned.
Exercising this option requires the approval of
the Dean of the School or College you are
enrolled in. It may be used for only one course,
and only one retake is permitted. The course
must be taken at Stetson University.
Degree Audit
Degree audit is an online tool for students to monitor
their academic progress toward degree completion.
It reviews past and present coursework as well as
mapping out future courses based on the students
determined course of study. Degree Audit is
refreshed every night and will auto-populate
requirements as they are met.

Placement Testing
Quantitative Reasoning
As part of the general education requirements, all
students will complete a quantitative reasoning (Q)
course. All incoming students who are required to
take calculus (MATH 122Q, MATH 130 or MATH
141Q) must complete an online math placement.
Students should review their Degree Audit to see the
Q requirement for their declared major.
Writing Requirement
All incoming students must satisfy the Writing
Requirement as part of their general education
requirements by the end of their first year. One
writing course must be completed with a minimum
grade of C at the level of ENGL 101 or higher.
Students who are bringing in credit for ENGL 101
(e.g., transfer, AP or IB scores) and started classes
before January 2015 need to submit a writing
portfolio to determine their placement.

Students who begin classes January 2015 should
submit a writing self-assessment instead.

Modern Language Placement Exam
All students have the option to complete a modern
language course (102 level or above) as part of their
general education requirements, with demonstrated
proficiency of a modern language being required for
majors within the School of Business
Administration. For French, German or Spanish the
test is taken in 129 Sampson Hall. Students who
wish to take the Russian placement test must
schedule an interview with the Russian Department
Chair.

Technology Proficiency
Students in the School of Business Administration
are required to demonstrate technical proficiency in
four Microsoft Office applications. This requirement
is broken down into two separate components:
1. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and
Microsoft PowerPoint. Students must pass
an exemption exam that covers both
applications. This link for this test must be
purchased either in the bookstore or through
an access code. For further information, see
the Information Technology Proficiency
Requirements:
http://www.stetson.edu/business/decisioninformation-science/technology-proficiencyexams.php
2. Proficiency in Microsoft Access and
Microsoft Excel. Students have the option of
demonstrating proficiency by taking a
second exemption exam covering these two
applications or by completing a half-unit
(half unit) course, BSAN 101.
If a student is unsuccessful in passing either exam,
he or she be required to retake the exam to obtain a
passing score to demonstrate proficiency and to
satisfy any prerequisite requirements.
