Three names for a specialized practice of professional nursing that focuses on the promotion of health within the context of the values, beliefs and practices of a faith community.
With the intentional focus of spiritual health, a faith community nurse uses the nursing interventions of education, counseling, advocacy, referral, resources and volunteers to provide health promotion and education, disease prevention, and wholistic health of the body, mind and spirit to their faith community or nursing practice.
The health ministry nurse acts as personal health counselor, health educator and a volunteer coordinator.
The purpose of the Foundations in Faith
Community Nursing Course is to prepare registered nurses and/or health ministers to develop and/or participate in the healing ministry of a faith community.
RNs can provide access to healthcare within their faith communities through health promotion, education and disease prevention with the support of clergy and lay health ministers.
• Registered Nurses with a current license committed to the care of the spirit as part of the process of promoting wholistic health.
• Retired nurses, licensed practical nurses, social workers, allied health professionals, clergy, clergy spouses, chaplains, and lay persons may serve in this ministry of health and wholeness, under the direction of a registered nurse in a faith community.
The participant will:
• Identify the integration of faith and health as central to the faith community nurse role.
• Demonstrate knowledge, attitude, and skills to practice as a beginning faith community nurse and/or health minister.
• Identify a Health Ministry network of continuing development and support including an inter-collegial peer system of support.
• Identify core concepts of spiritual formation; professionalism; health and wholeness; and community, incorporating culture and diversity in faith community nursing and/or health ministry.
