Artist’s impression of Te Hāpua: Halswell Centre 2 Conceptual planning for Te Hāpua: Halswell Centre began in 2009 when $23.1 million was earmarked for the development in the Council's 2009–2019 long term plan. Even prior to the post-quake population shift, the Council identified that there was a population boom and distinct community needs in Halswell. The Centre was officially opened in November 2015. How did Te Hāpua: Halswell Centre get its name? Nō hea te ingoa o Te Hāpua: Halswell Centre? Between December 2014 and January 2015, Christchurch City Council ran a community competition to name the new centre. The Council received 162 potential names from the public. The winning name was 'Halswell Centre'. The name also references the location of the complex alongside Te Tauawa-a-Maka/ Nottingham Stream, an upper tributary of the Huritini/Halswell River, an important source of the lake. A Māori name was sourced from tangata whenua; Te Hāpua. This gives reference to pools of water, and a subtle reference to Waihora (Lake Ellesmere), often referred to as a ‘hāpua’ or coastal lagoon. 3 Special features of the complex Ētahi āhuatanga ahurei o te pūtahi • Fully accessible for individuals of all ability levels • Customer Service Desk • New pool changing rooms, pool control office and BBQ pavilion • Large and small meeting rooms for groups to use, with after-hours access • Extensive library collection in a range of formats • A Learning Centre • A youth area, a children’s area and a comfortable and accessible older persons area • A Te Ao Māori space, a local history area and community information area • A café with outdoor views • A specific area for outdoor community activities like markets and performances • Capacity for dance and low-impact fitness activities Learn new technology skills in the Learning Centre Extensive library collection 4 Special design features Ōna āhuatanga hoahoa ahurei The design has slot shapes in the exterior walls, surrounded by glass where lush vegetation will be planted.
