BECKY GOLDSMITH
This month's speaker is Becky Goldsmith who is originally from Oklahoma
City. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma with her degree in
interior design. After moving to Tempe, Arizona and Tulsa, Oklahoma, she
now resides with her husband in Sherman, Texas where her husband is
Dean of the Sciences at Austin College.
Becky discovered quilting when her two boys needed comforters for their
bunk beds. She has not put her needle down since!
Becky met Linda Jenkins, her partner in Piece O’ Cake Designs, not long after she started quilting at a meeting of the Green Country Quilters’ Guild in
Tulsa. They’ve been friends ever since. They

The Beach Cities Quilters Guild was established to promote quilting and other fabric arts in the South Orange County area. Membership is $30 per year, October
through September. Guests are welcome at meetings for a $5 guest fee (free in December). For membership information, contact Becky McDaniel, 27741 Daisyfield
Dr., Laguna Niguel, CA 92677 . Web Site: beachcitiesquilters.org.
Listed email and phone numbers are for BCQG business only please.
It’s June and the Quilt Show is just about over and most
of you are each taking a deep breath and ready to get
back to your families, gardens or, sewing machines. July
and August are what I like to call the “free-time” month.
So I ask each of you NOW to take the time to fill out the
“Board volunteer forms” for the next year, which doesn’t
start until October. I know it feels like we just finished
volunteering, but the Guild must plan and schedule ahead
of time to keep everything running smoothly.
There are so many positions on the board, some are just
plain fun, some are more creative, and some take a commitment of time. I promise you that whatever position
you take, you will enjoy being a part of this group. I also
really believe that if you “bring-a-friend” to partner with,
the time spent is more fun and feels like less time for
each of you. Most committees benefit from a two-man
team. So you can ask to be added to a team. We, the
current board, will be there for support.
The Guilds future depends on its members. There will
always be a need for a future President. Think about it…
and start getting involved now.
Meetings are held the 2nd Thursday
of each month at the

Applique With Attitude
Learn the hand applique techniques that will help to
you sew better and happier. In addition to easy
template making and how to make and use a placement for appliqué, you will perfect your invisible
appliqué stitch as you work on your block in class.
Stitching techniques include cutaway applique, outer
and inner points, and curves. Students work on the
center 12" x 12" block in class. The pattern for this small quilt is
included .
Learn to applique with attitude the Piece O' Cake
way! Your stitches not only hold the applique in
place, they embellish as well! You will learn the
tricks of needle turn hand applique and sewing with
perle cotton in this class for all skill levels. This applique method is fast and fun and very cute! We will
cover three different stitches in class. The pattern
for this 10" x 10" quilt is included. This class is suitable for all skill levels.
JULY
Sue Rasmussen
One-day class, Curved Flying Geese, Friday, July 13; One-day class, Machine Quilting, Saturday, July 14
Sewing Party 10-4
This is an introductory technique class for Curved
Paper Piecing. In this class, students will learn how to
draw curved flying geese patterns, and will be introduced to many of the design possibilities of curved geese- for use
either in a border or as an essential design element for quilts. In
this workshop, as students learn
this technique, they will draw and
sew a simple curved geese sample,
incorporating all the aspects taught
in the workshop by Sue Rasmussen.
In this class, students will start working on muslin sandwiches to
perfect their hand and foot speed coordination. When students
achieve this confidence, we start to play with quilting designs. Each
student works independently and at their own speed with personal
help from Sue. Some students may want to perfect free motion
feathers while others basic
background designs. Although
this is an introductory class to Machine Quilting, a
technique that requires much practice, Sue shares
her extensive knowledge about needles and threads,
batting and much, much more. Even if you have done
machine quilting before, you will definitely learn so
much from this class with Sue Rasmussen.
AUGUST
Terry Waldron
One-day class, Scraffito, Friday, August 10; One-day class The Art of Seascapes, Saturday, August 11
Sewing Party 10-4
Remember how fun it was making crayon scraffitos in
elementary school? You colored the paper, then covered it with India ink, waited for it to dry, and then
scratched into it to make a picture. No worries... Now
we'll do that with cloth! First comes the simple sewing
of strips and strips of fabric to batting. Then we'll
cover it with one large piece of black fabric. Did you
know that there is an amazing array of gorgeous patterned all-black
fabric out there? It's true! You'll learn to freely cut a pattern-less picture from that one piece of cloth. The final sewing is simple, but the
finished piece is striking! You don't even have to BE an artist to make
this one-of-a-kind piece of true ART... and it's FUN!
JUNE 2012
There are endless possibilities for using the sea as a
major element in a composition, but there are a few
rules that you need to know as well. In this class we
will turn hand-dyed fabrics into the majesty of the
ocean. You'll learn "rough cut" to simulate water and
waves, the sand dunes, and even the mountains and
cliffs. This is a design class, but you will be taught
sewing techniques to help the water look wetter and
the hills rockier. You will even learn how to add fish,
seaweed, and other marine creatures to your work,
if you'd like.

PHILANTHROPY
This month Beach Cities Quilters Guild donated 35 quilts, 11 pillowcases, 2
fleece blankets, and 6 receiving blankets. Donations went to 3 very sick children, 3 sick adults, the VFW, UCI Oncology, United Cerebral Palsy, Orange
County Child Abuse Prevention, Prototypes (a shelter), Village of Hope, an
orphanage in Tijuana, and foster homes for newborns. The Laguna Beach
Boys and Girls Club, the Mission Viejo Animal Shelter, and Laura’s House received auction quilts for their fundraisers. This would not happen without
the amazing generosity of this guild. Thank you all so much. Please e-mail us
if you know of a need for a quilt.
Please note that the next Philanthropy Sewing Day will be the 2nd Monday of
th
June, the 11 . It will be a Cutting Party, so bring your cutting tools. No sewing machines needed. We will meet at
Sewing Party from 10 until 4. Please come for all or as much of the day as you can. We’re hoping to get a lot of kits
cut. Parties are a lot of fun. Everyone helps everyone else choose fabrics for the patterns that we have. All of it is
easy!
We are totally excited about the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative.
When we showed a display at the Tustin Historical
Society Home Tour event on May 5 , we were so please with the responses. Our little quilts (9”x12” maximum size)
will be donated to AAQI after our quilt show. They will be displayed at the quilt show. They will be sold on-line, with
the funds going to Alzheimer’s research. The last numbers that we have seen are $713,000 earned and all of it goes to
research. Check out the web site: www.alzquilts.org. You will see some of the quilts being sold and if you scroll
down the page, you will see a letter from Temple University, thanking AAQI for funding a research study. This is an
on-going project. We are meeting on the 3rd Thursday of each month at Moore’s in Mission Viejo, for demonstrations
and sewing. Jean Impey graciously demonstrated a fabric weaving technique at both the April and May sewing days.
We are looking for ideas for additional demonstrations, so feel free to share anything that interests you. Be sure to
sign up to participate, as space is limited. Sign-ups are at the Philanthropy Table at guild meetings or by e-mailing Diana
or I.
th
Be sure to check out the Philanthropy Tables at the quilt show.
We will have the colorful posters that Diana made
depicting the donations made by Philanthropy since the last quilt show. The Alzheimer’s art quilts will be on display,
along with pictures, quilts, and a book of thank you notes.
As always, we can use more help in all parts of this process: cutting kits, sewing quilts, and especially quilting (either by
long-arm or domestic machines). For those of us without free motion skills, there is not a thing wrong with straight
lines. Keep up the great work. You are so much appreciated.

AUCTION QUILTS
We have had new items
donated since our last
Newsletter. Here are
some of the beautiful
pieces you can bid on at
our Quilt Show.
PRESIDENT’S QUILT 2012
It’s that time of the year when we start the process to honor our acting President, Sandy Corbin, for all her hard work
by making her a fabulous quilt. Sandy has chosen a tropical garden/jungle theme. Background fabrics in lush greens will
be available for you to pick up at the guild meetings in April, May and June. Sandy would love to have a variety of wonderful flowers on her quilt.
Guidelines:
Dimensions: Finished size will be 5” x 5”. Your block should measure at least 5.5 x 5.5 or larger unfinished. We will
trim your block for you after it is turned in.
Colors: No grey tones. Bright colors preferred. Sandy would like this to look like an assorted bouquet you would
find at Costco or Trader Joe’s.
Design: All types of flowers and tropical flora, please. They can be pieced, appliquéd, paper-pieced, embroidered, etc.
No animals of any kind. If you have a question, give me a call. Please feel free to embellish your block, but if you are
going to add anything that might be breakable, such as beads, etc., put it in a baggie and pin it to your block. The quilt
will be rolled on a frame for hand quilting, so please take that into consideration.
The final deadline to turn in your block will be the July 12th meeting. You can also mail your block to my
home. My address is in our directory.
Please make sure that you sign your block. It is best to sign next to your design so that it does not get cut off when
we trim your block and sew it together.
If you have any questions, please call me at (949) 951-8464 or email at nancymcb64@gmail.com
Have fun and be creative. Thank you.

LIBRARY
VOLUNTEERS FOR JUNE MEETING
Suzie Quesnel had her hands full when illness struck two in the group and the opening of the library was delayed.
Thanks to Suzie, the library was running as soon as possible. Barbara Chase is also a quiet sentinel ferrying books to
and from the library each meeting. Thank you, Suzy and Barbara, the library was saved due to your efforts. It was just
so gladdening that Holly Dennard, Katy Lillie, Mimi Harris, Karen Harvey, Lee Brown, Emily LaMond, Peggy Mayer,
Carol Silver and Diane Reho all stepped in to assist in checking books in and out, returning books to the bins, and helping in any way possible.[Belinda, we missed you! Get well soon.] Thanks so much to everyone who helped and apologies to those of you who helped and are not mentioned. It’s vacation time, and if there are some of you who would
like to assist in a limited manner at the June meeting, kindly email Patty Ashley at pashley1@cox.net. Please come early
to the June meeting, if you can, to learn easy tasks which anyone can do. You do not have to carry books home.
NEW BOOKS
The Guild purchased two new books. Quilts With a Spin, 7 New Projects from Piece O’Cake Designs (2004) by Becky
Goldsmith & Linda Jenkins and Thoroughly Modern Dresden, Quick & Easy Construction, 13 Lively Quilts Projects for
All Skill Levels by Anelie Belden. (2009). Members will instantly love these beautiful books and the brightly-colored
quilts – just waiting to be made.
BOOK DONATIONS
Thank you again, Angela Knox, who donated ten more books. Fat quarters, jelly rolls, stripping along with easy appliqué are all in the stacks graciously given to the Guild by Angela. Please find these books displayed on the library table in
June.
Mystery lovers will also enjoy Lee Brown’s gift of Patchwork Mysteries: Squared Away by Cara Putnam. This is the eleventh in the series. Thank you so much, Lee.
Guess who is a big fan of Jennifer Chiaverini, the New York Times Bestselling Author? Members saw her working in the
library at the May meeting. Okay, it’s Katy Lillie. She donated seventeen Chiaverini books to the guild and they are fast
and fun to read. Thank you, Katy, for remembering the Guild and sharing your treasured books. So if you are a fan,
come by the library and check one out.
Approximately forty-five different authors are represented in the magnanimous donation of sixty books from Cindy
Gilkey, a former BCQG member, from Laguna Hills. Thank you, Cindy, for your generosity. Thanks also for the fabulous whole cloth quilt kit. It is winding its way to an opportunity basket. Cindy also knits and crochets and recommends Guild Members participate in making skull caps for cancer patients through Knots of Love at knotsof love.org.
The Guild would also like to express its appreciation to Past President Elaine Pappas Puckett, for her behind-the-scenes
good words to help make this possible.

Our Guild has been successful because of the time, energy, and generosity of its volunteers. Please take
a few moments to review the descriptions of the various Board positions, printed in the Bylaws section
