Turner, Jr. Executive Vice President PNC Financial Services Group We encourage every member of our community to make reflection a habit of the mind and the heart. Reflection increases our understanding of our surroundings and of ourselves. Reflection encourages appreciation for what we have accomplished. And reflection provides us with insights into how we can develop as a community and as individuals. As I reflect on the last two years, I am thankful for our faculty and staff who work tirelessly to support our students. I am thankful that we have students who take their education so seriously. And I am thankful for you, our supporters and volunteers, who make this education possible for students from disadvantaged Baltimore City neighborhoods. As I reflect, I remember the thrill and nervousness we all felt when we dispatched our students to work for the first time in September 2007. Then, in our second year, I remember the pride our sophomores displayed when they reassured incoming freshmen that work would be a positive experience and that, if they studied, they would do well on their exams. Our students are mastering the art of reflection. During the 2008–09 school year members of the class of 2011 participated in Sophomore Conversations, which marks each student’s progress toward achieving the following characteristics by graduation: open to growth, religious (of any faith), intellectually competent, loving, committed to justice and a seasoned and experienced worker. Each sophomore spoke candidly with a faculty or staff member, reflecting on how he or she had grown in these areas since enrolling at the school. Our students valued this experience. During one conversation a student shared: “Cristo Rey is a very caring community, which accepts everyone from all backgrounds and ethnicities. Because of this, I have learned to better express myself. This has improved my relationships with my peers, administrators, and all the adults in my life… Everyone has growing to do. I plan to frequently reflect, learn, and become a better role model for young men.” As you read the following pages, I invite you to reflect with me, remembering how far the school has come and how much more we can accomplish together!
