The School of the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen The Report Card Summer Newsletter 2011 The Blue Jean Ball ~ The Perfect Fit….Classic Rockin’ Fun O n Saturday, April 16, parents, parishioners, and guests of the School of the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen celebrated The Blue Jean Ball. Our 50th annual Cathedral Ball was held at The Carriage House at the Evergreen Museum and Library on Charles Street. The Ball is made possible by the combined efforts of many Cathedral parents who work together throughout the year to make things perfect for this special evening. Special thanks go to our chairpersons for the evening, Alexa & Pete Gilmore and Leanne & Hugh Mohler; and our honorary sponsors, Reverend Monsignor Bruce Jarboe and Sister Josephann Wagoner, SSND. Alexa Gilmore said, “Despite torrential downpours and a posted tornado watch, over 370 guests celebrated the evening and everyone had a blast.” inside: Pete & Alexa Gilmore and Leanne & Hugh Mohler, Cathedral Ball Chairs. Fred & Helen Kopits Hiser ’73 did a wonderful job once again this year as Decorations Chairs. Helen shared, “The goal of the Decorations Committee was to create a sense of casual elegance and to accent it with a sense of humor. The tented entrance to the carriage house at the Evergreen House glowed with candle-lit lanterns, welcoming all to The Blue Jean Ball. After checking in, guests passed under a whimsical chandelier made of denim roses and “candles” to enter the banquet hall. Garlands of denim and copper discs criss-crossed under the ceiling of the tent, which was washed with blue light. Denim birds roosted on several of the tables, surrounded by candles and blue jean flowers with zipper leaves. Other tables sported cut-off blue jeans from which rose copper standards that supported denim-rose-covered spheres and copper leaves. Passing through the arched brick carriage house doors, one’s eye was immediately drawn to the backdrop behind DJ Chris Kopec. It was a patchwork of the waistbands, pockets, and legs of the many pairs of jeans so graciously donated by the Cathedral community. Here, too, lanterns shone on the windowsills and blue-jean birds watched over the festivities. Bouquets of denim calla lilies and peonies decorated the elbow tables around the dance floor and in the stable where the Silent Auction items were displayed.” Helen & Fred thank the families whose jean donations >>> Continued on page 2 SCMOQ Summer 2011 Newsletter 1 Melissa & Ed Taylor, Chairs of Auction. This 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk is held to provide an activity for both communities to come together while raising funds to benefit Mother Seton Academy (MSA). The event, sponsored by the School of the Cathedral, was chaired by school parents, Sheila Muldowney and Patty Darby. Over 300 walkers and runners including students, faculty, and families from both schools were blessed and led in prayer by Msgr. Bruce Jarboe before the official start of the race. Neal Kopasek returned this year to lead the runners and walkers in a “pre-race warm up.” The crowd cheered as each runner crossed the finish line. During the awards ceremony, recognition was given to runners who placed in their categories. This was a wonderful morning to share with our MSA family, and a true sign of our ongoing partnership. Mother Seton Academy is an all scholarship middle school that serves boys and girls of low-income families in Baltimore City. Mother Seton Academy is grateful to the School of the Cathedral community, the Cardinal Cup committee, and its volunteers who have supported them for the past 17 years. ■ eussical Jr. was performed to a sold out crowd during the last weekend of March by over 50 Middle School students from the Cathedral. This vibrant musical is based on the stories of Dr. Seuss. Seussical Jr. tells the stories of Horton trying to save the small Whos of Whoville, Gertrude McFuzz, Mayzie LaBird, the mischievous Cat in the Hat and many more tales that we all know and love. The Middle School students began the process of bringing this show to life with auditions in November. Thirty-eight kids were cast as part of the ensemble. Then, as a group, they worked to learn their dances, songs, harmony, and acted their way through three months of rehearsal. They were supported by a top notch production crew of sound and lighting technicians, stage crew, house managers, and stage managers made up of Middle School students. Their technical support was a very large part of the success of Seussical Jr. Many thanks also to the parents who organized Kiss the Cast, programs, ticketing, posters, and the cast party! This was an amazing group of kids that put on an inspiring and uplifting production of the stories of Dr. Seuss.
