Ho m a n Sq u a re o p e n s The biggest step toward advancing learning began in Jan. 2002 as we opened our first ever satellite facility in Chicago. This high-tech facility continues to gain momentum with inner city audiences and has already expanded to offer additional programs and services. Homan Square has expanded from 6 to 10 programs and has also added preschool programs and outreach services. The Robert J. Day classroom at Homan Square is a fine example of how the latest in technology can enhance the delivery of our messages. O u t re a c h e x p a n d s Another significant step occurred in the expansion of Suburban Outreach services. A new push in the marketing of Robert Crown’s suburban outreach programs has resulted in the service of thousands of additional students. Our outreach program has geared up for expansion with many additional panels, models, slides and exhibits - all replicating those used at Robert Crown. Demand for outreach programs continues to climb and Robert Crown is positioning itself to meet that need. Pr o g r a m s v a l i d a t e d A critical step in advancing goals for all learning came during 2002 when University of Oklahoma researchers gave high marks to our 5th grade sex education program. Other studies by Penn State University continue to validate the effectiveness of our programming. As we plan and improve programs for the future, this key research acts as a guide toward messages that will have the greatest impact and highest rate of retention by students. The Center continues to combine with other organizations to enhance learning on many different levels. Collaboration with Hinsdale Hospital made our 7th annual Body Trek camp a meaningful and highly interactive opportunity for students. Cooperation with other social service agencies at Homan Square broadens the effectiveness of our messages there. At the forefront in making all of these achievements possible is our strong and supportive donor base. Donors showed their commitment to Robert Crown’s mission through the Annual Appeal, the Golf Invitational, and the American Girls Fashion Show. It is only through their renewed support that Robert Crown can continue to enhance programs and carry healthy messages to an ever-widening group of students. Fu t u re c h a l l e n g e s Fiscal year 2002 showed unprecedented challenges to health education and its funding. The need for quality programs has never been greater and yet we face the reality of these tough economic times. We face a triple economic threat with shrinking donor budgets, state budgets and school budgets. Yet, we remain committed to advancing learning in new and innovative ways, and to reaching out to underserved audiences. We are bolstered in our mission by the unwavering commitment of our supporters and know that together we can not fail. The future of health education can only look bright when there are so many dedicated to its cause. Under SFAS No. 117, the Center is required to report information regarding its financial position and activities according to three classes of net assets: unrestricted net assets (consisting of undesignated and temporarily designated amounts), temporarily restricted net assets, and permanently restricted net assets. In addition, the Center is required to present a statement of cash flows. As permitted by this new statement, the Center has discontinued its use of fund accounting and has, accordingly, reclassified its financial statements to present the three classes of net assets required. Contributions The Center has also adopted SFAS No. 116, “Accounting for Contributions Received and Contributions Made”. In accordance with SFAS No. 116, contributions received are recorded as unrestricted, temporarily restricted, or permanently restricted support depending on the existence and/or nature of any donor restrictions. The ratio of allocated costs to amount raised was 20.3% in fiscal year 2002. In v e s t m e n t s In accordance with SFAS No. 124, “Accounting for Certain Investments Held by Not-for-Profit Organizations”, investments in equity securities with readily determinable fair values, and all debt securities are reported at market value.
