Letter From the President
Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago (BGCC) was founded on strong
leadership and a promise to service, and we continue to be guided by
people throughout our organization with extraordinary talent and
dedication to our mission.
Every day I am reminded of the lives we touch and our unique role in the
community. Our well trained staff greets Club members by name each
and every day during the critical after school hours in Chicago. In this
caring environment, our Club members develop confidence, build
higher expectations, and take responsibility for themselves and their community. They
become critical thinkers and develop the fundamental life skills necessary for success.
We approach our future with an appreciation for our legacy and a commitment to the
unique challenges of our time. In the past year, two of our auxiliary boards held momentous
celebrations that reinforced the dedication of our board members. The Guild Board hosted
its 10th Annual Lawn Ball and the Woman’s Board welcomed over 500 attendees to their
65th Annual Summer Ball where they raised a record amount at their event.
Our board has provided great leadership and our entire team is delivering services that
prepare young people for life. We are ever grateful to the dedication and passion provided by
Craig Martin during his tenure, and we welcome the appointment of Todd Hamilton as Chairman
of the Board of Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago.
On behalf of all of us at Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago, I thank you for your support and invite
you to share the next year with us – expanding our reach, advancing our programs, and serving
young people.
Sincerely,
James G. Keane

Q&A with the gantz family
Bill and Linda Gantz gifted $2.5 million to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago endowment, ensuring the availability of life changing youth programming and service
for years to come.
A commitment through generations
When Linda Gantz joined the Woman’s Board of Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago in 1988, she had no idea she would
be bringing her family on a multi-generational journey of service, commitment, and generosity that would span
more than 25 years. We sat down with Linda and her husband, Bill, their daughters Caroline Burns and Leslie
McLamore, and five of their grandchildren to hear more about what Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago means to
the Gantz family.
Why did you first get involved with Boys & Girls Clubs
of Chicago (BGCC)?
In 1988, my youngest child, Caroline, left home for
college. My children were all out of the house, and I
needed to focus my energy on something new. My
longtime friend, Bonnie Stearns, was already serving on
the Woman’s Board at BGCC, and encouraged me to get
involved. It struck a chord for me: it was a way I could
give back and help those less fortunate discover their
path to success.
What has motivated you to stay involved with the
organization for so long?
Six years ago, I listened to one of our Club members,
David Rojas, share his story at a Board meeting. Here
is a wonderful and dynamic young man who has endured
a traumatic life event that most of us cannot imagine.
But because of his Boys & Girls Club, he was able to
overcome that, to move forward with his life in a
positive way. He went on to college, and is now working
at one of our Clubs to support younger kids the way he
felt supported in his youth. Is there anything better
than that?
Your daughter Caroline recently joined the
Woman’s Board, and you have brought some of your
grandchildren to the Youth of the Year event to hear
Club members tell their story. Why is it important that
your whole family be a part of this organization?
I feel we have an obligation to give back. Not everyone
grows up in a supportive household. Not everyone has
access to opportunity. Many children are forced to go
without. It is important for me to share the experience
of Youth of the Year with my kids and grandkids so they
can see the incredible impact BGCC has on every child
who walks through the doors of a Boys & Girls Club.
How would you like your family to carry on this legacy
in the future?
My daughters are both passionate about this legacy
of giving. My grandchildren love meeting BGCC Club
members and are always asking about ways they can
help. Caroline and Leslie both set an example for their
children, showing them how to be compassionate and
how to make an impact. Caroline is excited to join the
Woman’s Board and see that the organization will
continue to thrive.
If there is one thing you could tell people about why
they should support Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago,
what would it be?
Your contribution doesn’t have to be enormous to make
a huge impact. You take that first step, and you help one
child. And that’s what it’s all about: one child at a time.
You walk into the Club, you see their smiling faces, you
hear their laughter, and you know that you have made a
difference that will last a lifetime.

Edwards
Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago’s premier annual
program recognizes members for their involvement
and contributions to their respective Clubs and their
academic performance.
Each year, Clubs select a Youth of the Year (ages
14-18) and a Junior Youth of the Year (ages 11-13).
Participants write essays and speak publicly to support
their nomination for the Chicago Youth of the Year.
The winner participates in regional and national Youth
of the Year competitions to win scholarships. The five
national finalists travel to Washington D.C. to meet
the President.
Shakhari Edwards, 17, became a member of the
Daniel A. Cotter Boys & Girls Club when she was
7 years old. She graduated with a 3.9 GPA from
North-Grand High School. She credits several Club
staffers with serving as her mentors, helping her
overcome shyness, and serving as support when she
needed it most. Shakhari’s leadership qualities and

compassion for others have led her to the field of
pediatric nursing, which she will begin studying at
Chicago State University in the fall.
Juan Espinoza, 16, a 10-year member of the General
Robert E. Wood Boys & Girls Club in Pilsen, was named
Youth of the Year runner-up. Juan said the Club has
helped him overcome a learning disability caused by
lead poisoning at a very young age. He attributes Club
staff, sports, and music programs for helping him
become the confident volunteer and achiever he is today.

Shakhari Edwards, the 2014 Boys
& Girls Club of Chicago Youth
of the Year Winner, on how the
organization has changed her life.
The following is a speech given by
Shakhari Edwards, the winner of the
2014 Youth of the Year Competition,
at the March 4 Boys & Girls Clubs of
Chicago gala.
My Boys & Girls Club, the Daniel A.
Cotter Club, has positively impacted
the person I am today. Having
supportive people around has helped
me overcome difficulties and has
increased my confidence and drive to succeed. I do not know what
type of person I would be today if I had not attended the Cotter Club.
During grade school, I struggled to maintain good grades. I wasn’t
focused on my education. I would often be put down by family
members and close friends who would make me feel worthless when
I tried to improve. I felt as if I had no one to turn to. As a result, I
had to attend summer school before I started the seventh grade.
As I struggled to make my family proud, I encountered a devastating
tragedy that would change my life forever. On August 15, 2008,
my brother, Aramis Edwards, was murdered. I was 12 years old and I
did not understand what was happening until the day of the funeral.
I then realized I wasn’t getting my brother back.

Woman’s Board 65 th anniversary
2014 Woman’s Board
The Woman’s Board of Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago
raised $1.3 million in support of local youth during its
65th Anniversary Summer Ball.
The Summer Ball is the Clubs’ largest annual fundraiser,
generating critical support for programs offered to
more than 1,600 youth each day at 18 Boys & Girls Club
locations throughout Chicago. Club programs allow
boys and girls in some of the city’s most economically
challenged communities to develop into successful,
caring, and responsible citizens.
The Woman’s Board of Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago
was formed in 1949 at the request of Brigadier General
Robert E. Wood, CEO of Sears Roebuck and founder of
Allstate Insurance, to provide community service to
young Chicago boys, specifically those who lost a father
in World War II.
Since its formation in 1949, the Woman’s Board has
raised more than $75 million to support life-enhancing
after-school programs in a safe and nurturing environment,
led by caring and devoted adult professionals.

The Guild Board of Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago
raised more than $250,000 in support of local youth
during its 10th Anniversary Lawn Ball. Guests heard
an inspirational speech and a personal success story
from 2014 Youth of the Year Winner, Shakhari Edwards,
whose life has been positively impacted by membership
at the Daniel A. Cotter Club.
The event benefited Keystone Clubs, a program
comprised of group leadership and service clubs for
adolescents to elect officers, plan and implement
activities, and contribute something of value to others.
Activities involve service to Club and community,
leadership development, education and career exploration,
unity, free enterprise, and social interaction.
The Guild Board membership is comprised of
62 business and civic leaders who actively engage in
raising awareness and funding for BGCC. The annual
Lawn Ball has raised over $2.7 million since it began
in 2004.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago’s Guild Board
was founded in 2005 by a group of socially-conscious
professionals committed to advancing the mission
of BGCC through a combination of talent, advocacy,
and passion.

In 2014, BGCC celebrated 10 years with BOA’s
Student Leaders Summer Internship program as a
host organization. The program, which recognizes
community-minded and academically successful
high school students and connects them to
summer employment, has partnered with BGCC
to place the Student Leaders as junior camp
counselors in our Clubs’ summer camp programs.
Last spring, three BOA Student Leaders were
awarded paid internships at our Green Club,
Ford Heights, and Morgan Park Club.
The BOA Student Leaders Internship program
helps young adults gain a greater understanding
of how nonprofits create impact in the community
and helps develop them as the next generation
of community leaders. The program includes
two components:
• An eight-week, paid summer internship with a
nonprofit organization.
• Participation in the Student Leaders
Summit in Washington, D.C., from July 12-17
(all expenses paid).

corporate partner:
Outerwall
For the past four years, Outerwall has been a
charitable and community engagement corporate
partner, benefitting our General Robert E. Wood
Club located in Chicago’s South Lawndale
neighborhood. Through the invaluable support and
leadership from Outerwall Executive and BGCC
Corporate Board member, Kiera Hynninen, our
Club members have enjoyed meaningful and fun
volunteer events, and our Club has been improved
through volunteer service projects. Outerwall has
sponsored career exploration field trips to their
offices, holiday-themed special events that include
an educational or art component, “Movie Night”
at the Club’s theater for employees and youth,
technology support for the Club’s computer lab, and
“Back to School” events featuring interactive games
and distributing much needed school supplies
for our Club members. Outerwall has consistently
worked with our staff to provide original and
rewarding experiences for volunteers and our youth,
and it is truly a great partnership for our General
Robert E. Wood Club and its Club members.
