The channels will not just be available as HD2 stations though, they are part of a total audio, video and text package that will serve Internet channels, Web sites, iPods, satellite broadcasting and in-vehicle navagation systems as well. The new programming was created by CC's Content Research & Development Group, and is the result of "a previously secret initiative" known as "the Format Lab." The Format Lab is made up of veteran programmers and is headed up by content EVP Tom Owens and Online Music & Radio head Evan Harrison. The organization is described as a "virtual community" made up of over 200 programmers and production vets."We have become agnostic about delivery and are completely passionate about content," said Clear Channel Radio President/CEO John Hogan. "And we'll continue to lead the radio industry on to new platforms. Radio programming is the most engaging and compelling media today. Our power to connect with, and hold, consumers will continue to reveal itself as we supplement our outstanding AM/FM properties with programming for new devices."Clear Channel promises that a number of non-professional radio programmers will also be involved in many of the new stations, such as a personal trainer as part of the workout channels or a Broadway vet programming a channel of show tunes.Broadcasters will be able to use the CC content however they see fit, from just running it as-is to adding in their own customized, local content. "We've created this programming to give broadcasters the most flexibility and the best return on investment," said Hogan. "The massive amounts of programming needed to feed rapidly growing numbers of HD2 multicast channels, Internet streams and other near-term opportunities dwarfs the real estate that our industry had to fill with the advent of FM. "One of the most exciting things about HD Radio is the ability to offer innovative new content customized for each individual local market," said HD Digital Radio Alliance President/CEO Peter Ferrara. "Unlike any other audio entertainment source, radio is all about serving the local community and these new HD2 channels will do just that."
