ANSWER ANY FOUR QUESTIONS
QUESTION 1: (25 MARKS)
(a) Briefly explain two errors when measuring distances in chain surveying and
how they can be eliminated.
(10 marks)
(b) A steel tape, of nominal length 30m, was used to measure a survey line on
the flat. The length recorded in the field book was 118.10m. On verification, the
tape was found to be 29.95 metres long.
(i) What was the correct length of the line?
(5 marks)
(ii) If the line lay on a slope of 1 in 10, what would be the horizontal length of
the line?
(5 marks)
(iii) What reading is required to set out a horizontal distance of 15.10m
between to pegs on site, one peg being 0.75m above the other?(5 marks)
QUESTION 2: (25 MARKS)
(a)
Define a contour and describe briefly the properties of contour lines.
(7 marks)
(b)
The following staff readings were observed successively with a level in an
ordinary levelling exercise in good weather conditions. The instrument was
moved forward after the underlined readings.
1.134, 2.502, 1.497, 2.540, 2.219, 0.271, 1.301, 0.695, 1.190, 1.130, 2.813
The first reading was taken with a staff held upon bench mark A of reduced level
106.010m and the last reading on another bench mark B of reduced level
100.770m.
(i) Enter the readings in a level book using the Rise and Fall method and
reduce the levels.
(12 marks)
(ii) Apply all arithmetical checks.
(3 marks)
(iii) Quote the closing error and comment on the closing error if the distance
between the two bench marks is 240m.
