Alberta’s Best Trade and Technology Students
Triumphant at National Competition
News Release
Edmonton, June 12, 2013 - 62 of Alberta’s finest trade and technology students competed in the Skills Canada
National Competition in Vancouver on June 5-8, 2013. Canada’s best students competed in over 40 construction,
technology, employment, transportation and services events. Alberta received 27 medals including 9 Gold, 8
Silver and 10 Bronze.
Alberta’s post-secondary students brought home Gold in Autobody Repair, Car Painting, Cooking, Landscape
Gardening and Precision Machining. High school students won Gold in Carpentry, IT Network Systems
Administration, TV/Video Production and Workplace Safety.
Team Alberta qualified for the Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) at the Provincial Skills Canada
Competition held in Edmonton on May 15-16, 2013. Team Alberta members receive a $500 WorldSkills Legacy
Scholarship and an additional $500 if they won gold at the SCNC.
Mike Holmes joined 500 talented young Canadians who successfully competed at their provincial and territorial
level, as they went for gold at the SCNC. The SCNC is the only national, Olympic-style, multi-trade and
technology event of its kind for young students and apprentices in the country. The Competition provides an
opportunity for students to be tested against industry standards and against their peers from across the nation in
their chosen discipline.
“Team Alberta benefits from a culture that recognizes the unlimited opportunities available to students pursuing
careers in the trades and technologies,” notes Shawna Bourke, Director of Communications, Skills Canada
Alberta. “All Skills Canada participants at a Regional, Provincial, National and International level reflect a
combination of ambition, natural talent and commitment to mastering their trade. Their futures are bright.”
