not travel very far. The milk you purchase in your local
grocery store is Canadian, the majority of it coming
from right here in Alberta while a small quantity may
come in from other provinces.
While you can rest assured that your milk is local and
Canadian, other products like cheese may be imported
or may be produced using imported dairy ingredients.

have been made using only high quality Canadian
milk or milk ingredients so you can be sure you are
choosing Canadian.

Canada has very high standards for milk
quality on our farms. All dairy farms
in Alberta participate in the Canadian
Quality Milk program which ensures milk
meets stringent safety measures during
production and is free of antibiotic
residue. Milk is rigorously tested before
being pasteurized and packaged.

you are supporting your local community
and economy. In Alberta there are
about 560 family-owned dairy farms and
approximately 10,000 Albertans rely on
the dairy industry for their livelihood.

Packed with 16 essential nutrients, milk is a nutritional powerhouse. The only ingredients
added to milk are vitamins A and D making it one of the most natural beverages available.
Milk is processed with a variety of fat levels to meet everyone’s preference.
Cream can range from 5% to 36% milk fat. This is the part of the milk that naturally
separates and floats on top of freshly gathered milk and is rich with flavour and smooth
in texture. Cream is a popular dessert ingredient and is held to the same high quality
standards as all other milk products.

How is the safety and quality of milk
in Canada guaranteed?
Milk safety is assured by safe production and processing
procedures followed by producers and processors. Safety of
milk and dairy products is constantly monitored and checked by
field and laboratory tests conducted by the dairy industry and
regulatory officials. Milk is tested before it even leaves the farm,
when it gets to the processing plant and all farm samples are
sent to a lab for further testing and screening. All Alberta milk
producers are enrolled in the Canadian Quality Milk Program,
an on farm program to ensure the quality and safety of milk, and
every dairy farm in Canada will be part of this program by 2015.
