Special 25th Anniversary Edition
A Message From Board President, Don Dennison
I’m so pleased to contribute to this special edition of Refuge in cele-
bration of our 25th Anniversary. The Nature Trust of New Brunswick is
on the move. The energy that is pouring out from our members, volunteers, partners and our dedicated staff is a real inspiration for the future
success of this organization.
I’d like to take this opportunity to highlight some of the
achievements the Nature Trust
has recently reached, and
divulge some of the exciting
projects and events the Trust
has planned for the rest of our
celebration year.
The Nature Trust’s 25th

Anniversary Campaign is in
full swing. We’ve had a very
good response so far. If you would like to help with the campaign, we
have opportunities designed to build support in the workplace, the community and on an individual basis; just contact us for details. The funds
generated from this campaign will increase our capacity to preserve the
ecologically significant areas in New Brunswick for generations to
come.
Mrs. Jessie Davies, a Past-President and co-chair of our very successful Coastal Lands Campaign, has received the recognition she deserves
for her tireless effort to improve the health of the Bay of Fundy and
coastal communities. Mrs. Davies is this year’s the recipient of a Gulf of
Maine Council Visionary Award and the Hometown 2012 Hero Award.
Jessie has generously donated her prize of $10,000 to the Nature Trust’s
25th Anniversary Campaign.
It’s finally here – DeepMap Eco, the smartphone application developed by the Nature Trust and Stellar Learning Strategies, has been officially launched to the public. Explore all 34 of our nature preserves
through your smartphone, learn about the flora and fauna that call our
unique landscapes home, access location-based information such as
trails, and directions to preserves, and also learn how to become in-
volved with the Nature Trust

making for a more meaningful conservation plan. In addition, a
methodology for identifying key potential habitats for species at risk is being developed with representatives from Environment Canada. Similar projects are also happening in the Middle and Upper Saint John
River, along the Miramichi River and in the Moncton Area. The goal of these projects is to identify the
most important areas within the watershed for land conservation activities, and to share this information
with other organizations and individuals in the province. This project is supported by Wildlife Habitat Canada, Environment Canada and NB Environmental Trust Fund.

Update from the NB Youth in Nature Campaign
Three art workshops were hosted at James C. Yerxa (Keswick), CaugheyTaylor (Bocabec) and Hyla Park (Fredericton) Nature Preserves. Thank you
to artists Chantal Richard, Jennifer Pazienza, Mallory Driscoll, and Paul
McAllister for leading these creative opportunities.
NB Nature Sessions have also begun. This involves “take-away shows” taking musicians into Nature Trust preserves and filming a song of their
choice in spaces that appeal to them. Musicians from across Canada have
been featured in our take-away shows, with six more sessions planned over
the coming months. These videoed performances will be featured on the Nature Trust website soon. This project is supported by the province’s PostSecondary Education Training & Labour through Youth Engagement Program.

were recently at Minister’s Face Nature Preserve on Long
Island to gain some inspiration for the “Art of Nature/Nature
of Art” collaboration project. The students from the College
will be designing pieces of art that integrate the emotions and
experiences they have on Nature Trust preserves. An art exhibition for the completed works will begin at the NB Museum in Saint John, December 2012, and travel to the UNB
Arts Centre by April 2013. This project is supported
by the NBCCD student union and Northampton Brewing
Company.
Frog Walks continue to be a great success in Hyla
Park Nature Preserve and beyond. We have reached
more than 160 individuals since our first frog walk
on April 28th. We are also leading nighttime walks,
hosting frog walks at other Nature Trust preserves,
and, perhaps most exciting of all, completing grey
treefrog scientific surveys in Hyla Park. As in the
past, our initiatives in Hyla Park are sponsored by
Remsoft, much appreciated!
