Occupational Safety
AND health
management systems
(OSHMS)
OVERVIEW
An Occupational Safety and Health Management System is a proactive management
system intended to manage and grow organisational safety and health well above
regulatory minimums by treating it as a core business activity. These systems emphasises
safety and health management as a fundamental business process to be treated in the
same manner as other aspects of business management. An effective system uses the
approach of planning, implementation, monitoring and review to continually improve
the organisation’s safety and health system and therefore performance.
Companies within all business sectors in Trinidad and Tobago are neither exempt from
Safety and Health legislation nor are they immune to occupational safety and health
incidents in the workplace. An adequate and well-implemented Occupational Safety
and Health Management System can benefit these organisations by:
•
Helping organisations create safer work environments
•
Demonstrating that the organisation is meeting legal requirements
•
Reducing injuries and injury-related costs
•
Providing
systems
that
can
measure
Occupational
Safety
and
Health
performance
•
Enhancing the organisation’s reputation
