Tutoring 4 Reflection:
1) What went well during the tutoring session? What happened? What did the student do?
Write down some of what the student read or wrote.
I read another Skippyjon Jones book with Jack this week which he loved! He really seems to get into the story. After I read the story, we did a story pyramid of the book together. It went pretty well and Jack enjoyed thinking of ways to describe the character and the story but next time I need to be more careful with following the directions of the story pyramid. We kind of strayed away from using just words and used more phrases instead. We also did a matching activity using cards with beginning digraphs and blends to make words. Jack did very well and was able to make a lot of words.
2) What did not go as well as expected? Why do you think it did not go so well? Was the work at the right developmental level?
I’m pretty happy with the way things went this week as well. We tried echo reading this week instead of the radio reading and I was really surprised to see how well it went. Jack was great at imitating the fluency and expression I modeled for him. The story pyramid went well for the most part but I need to work on trying to stick with the directions provided to get the most out of the activity.
3) What did you learn about teaching literacy from this session?
I learned this week that Jack really likes to do activities that allow him to take ownership of his learning. We played the boggles game again this week and just played around making different words with the cubes. Jack got really excited when he discovered word families and how he could change cap to tap, nap and map. He was able to do that with several different words. Every time he makes a new word I can just see his confidence grow.
4) What are you struggling with?
I think I need to work on finding words study activities that help with the areas that he needs work in such as digraphs but that are also fun and engaging. Jack also tends to try to rush through all the activities to get to the game at the end, I need to find a way to keep him from doing that and have him focus more on each of the activities.
