FUND 2012
Göteborg International Film Festival
Fund (GIFFF) has been in operation since
1998. Unfortunately 2011 came to be the last
year of its existence in this way. During 2011
the development policies of the Swedish government has been under reconstruction, and
the cultural department of SIDA (the Swedish International Development Cooperation
Agency) is no longer in function. Since the
beginning SIDA has been our close cooperation partner, which has made it possible to
support so many high-quality projects.
Throughout the whole period the fund
has operated in three main areas: We have
supported development of projects and post
production and distribution. We’ve also
involved ourselves in workshops, training
initiatives and support towards technical
equipment. Since the late 1990s GIFFF has
supported more than 150 individual film
projects and approximately 30 training
initiatives and educational projects – both
long and short term.
last support round in December 2011, there
are still many supported films remaining
to be completed. The festival will continue
to screen supported films for many years
to come – regardless of how the fund will
work in the future.
We would like to send our profound
gratitudes to all our many cooperation
partners, friends, collegues – and not least
film makers from all over the world, that
we have met along the way. It has been an
amazing experience in so many ways and
we have learnt so much.
Unfortunately there are no future deadlines planned, and we sincerely wish all the
talented film makers around the world the
best of luck with your future projects!
Thank you, see you again!
During 2012 Göteborg International Film
Festival will consider a reconstruction of
the fund and hopefully find new ways to
continue our work.
In the 35th edition Göteborg International
Film Festival 2012 we are proud to present
thirteen completed films. Since we had our

of teenage gangsters and the violence and
terrible social conditions in Manila.
As in Tribu, in Happyland
the cast, which is
made up of mostly non professional actors
does an amazing job. The film is also part of
Libirans social project with the goal to promote active citizenship among the marginalized youth, through sports and culture,
and to them help realizing their dreams of
achieving a better life. With Happyland Libiran has made a beautiful coming-of-age
film about a group of street kids and their
journey towards self-realization and hope.
Director Biography
Jim Diamond Meer Libiran is a journalist, writer, lecturer, poet and documentary filmmaker.
He is currently finishing his Master’s degree in Media Studies and Film at the University of the
Philippines’ Film Institute. Tribu (2007), his first full length film received several international
and national awards. Happyland, which, as a project in development, participated in the Pusan
Promotion Plan at the Pusan International Film Festival, in 2009, is his second film.
”The aim of Happyland is to bring these inspiring stories to national attention
so that through cinema we start the process of claiming our real-life
victories. Good cinema is not that which gives the audience a happy ending.
Good cinema is one that spurs the audience towards a happier life.”

Bakhmaro
georgia
Director: Salomé Jashi Production Company: Sakdoc Film
Bakhmaro is a three-story brick building in
a provincial Georgian town. At the center of
the building is a restaurant whose walls are
covered with bright green and orange plastic foam and where tables are set, waiting for
customers – who rarely come. Salomé Jashi
was at her first visit struck by the interior
and the bizarre ambiance of the restaurant
as well as the personalities of the waitresses working there. Later on she realized that
the building had more to offer. With her
observational style, and with an outstanding feeling for colours and composition, she
discovers small details in this poor and chaotic microcosmos, and uses them to portray
her troubled country.
A country waiting for
a change that never
comes, and where politics is always around.
Affecting not only the lives of the people
who live and work in this particular building, but the whole population of Georgia.
director Biography
Salomé Jashi is a journalist and documentary filmmaker based in Georgia. She was born
in the Soviet Union in 1981 and grew up during the struggle for the country’s independence followed by civil wars, from which she reported as a journalist. Her films have been
selected for several international film festivals, like the Leipzig International Film Festival
for Documentary and Animated Film, Cinéma du Réel in Paris, One World Human Rights
Documentary Film Festival in Prague among others.
”For me, this building is a symbol of the whole country; a country in which time
has almost stopped, or in which one particular part of time has been repeating
itself for over two decades now, since the collapse of the Soviet Union.”
Salomé Jashi

In My Mother’s Arms
iraq
Directors: Atia & Mohamed Al-Daradji Production company: Human Films
In Al-Sadr City, Baghdad’s toughest district,

hopeless mission to find enough funding

of the present one is evicting them, he still

some of those destinies.
Director Biography
Atia and Mohamed Al-Daradi are brothers, born in Baghdad, 1964 and 1978. Atia studied at the Fine Art Academy film department and founded Al Rafidain, Iraq’s premier film
production company. Mohamed is co-founder of Human Film, a UK & Netherlands-based
feature film production company. Alhlaam, Mohameds first feature film, produced by Atia,
screened at over 125 International Film Festivals, received over 22 awards, and represented
Iraq at the Academy Awards and the Golden Globe in 2007. The brothers went on working
together in War, Love, God and Madness and Son of Babylon – which screened in Sundance
and Berlin, among others. In My Mothers Arms, which they co-directed, had its world-premiere
in Toronto in September 2011.
“We realized that by highlighting this group of children from different ages,
cities and backgrounds, all living under one roof, we would be uncovering
a small part of Iraq that could enable people to see and feel the entirety
of the country. If this orphanage of boy and carers is able to solve the
problems they faced and suffered, then there is real hope for Iraq.”

Faith
Fe
Guatemala
Director: Alejo Crisóstomo Production Company: Ceibita Films
An evangelical priest is forced to question
the true reason why God has placed him on
earth. With this on his mind, the priest is
invited to give a religious service at the state
prison in Guatemala City. There he meets a
young fisherman who is accused of murdering a girl, and suddenly the priest finds his
true calling. Acting only on faith, he decides
to help the young convict at all costs.
Director Biography
Alejo Crisóstomo was born in Guatemala in 1975. He has written, directed and produced
several short films, documentaries and TV programs in Guatemala, Mexico and Chile. He
studied at the Escuela de Cine de Chile and has completed several workshops on screenplay writing, cinematography and documentary filmmaking. He has been invited to the
Talent Campus in both Berlin and Guadalajara and the IberTalent in Valencia. He is currently
co-producing the films Dos Aguas by Patricia Velásquez in Costa Rica and Divine by Cristián
Castro Fernández in Chile. He is also developing Hach and Nina – two features that will be
directed by him.
”I’m not religious, however I am intrigued by the power and strategies the
Evangelical Church employs to gain new members. By the marketing strategies
utilized to sell Father God as if He were a product and by how the poor give the
little that they have to a priest who has more than enough. Faith is a drama
with touches of suspense. An unpleasant view of Guatemala today.”

Nevertheless, they continue to believe and

his third film.
”In the Congo, like in many other African countries, football is almost like a

of supporters to every game they play. The teams are regcognized by the
Congolese football federation and the players have professional licences.
But they don’t get a decent salary, and no social security at all.”

many countries. She majored in English at McGill University in Montreal and recieved an MA
in film at Goldsmiths, University of London. For over a decade, she has worked extensively in

contemporary Zimbabwean life have been published in various anthologies. From 2004 to
2006 she served as Festival Director of the Zimbabwe International Film Festival and was
instrumental in expanding the festival and its outreach to a wider audience.
“I grew up in a post-independent Zimbabwe that supported the dreams of boys,
while indoctrinating girls and women as supporters of boys’ dreams. In high
school I was discouraged from pursuing a career that my teachers perceived to be
’unrealistic’: film. But it was through the support of friends and family that I was
able to see beyond the short-sightedness of others. To me, Playing Warriors is an
ongoing conversation amongst the phenomenal female warriors in Zimbabwe
who, against all odds, create positive change in people’s lives every day.”

Bakoroman
burkina faso
Director: Simplice Ganou Production company: Bathyspère Production
The Bakoroman is a
network of young people living on the streets of Gounghin, an inner-city neighbourhood in Ouagadougou,
the capital of Burkina Faso. They find the
wide-spread term “street children” derogatory and use the word Bakoroman instead,
which is believed to originate from the bustard – a bird which sleeps in clearings.
Documentary director, Simplice Ganou,
lived in the area for a long time, which made
him a part of Bakoroman everyday life.
This position made it possible to to depict
and share invisible pieces of life. The film
is organized around three axis: interviews,
scenes from real life, and scenes from their
daily life which they reenact on stage. Dur-
ing the preparations for the project, when
Ganou asked a group of children what they
wanted to show from their lives in a film he
was surprised to see them act some parts
of their lives instead of telling their stories.
This gives the film an intimate extra dimension, where joy, anguish and resentment is
expressed in a way which would have been
difficult through interviews.
Leaving one’s family at 7, 12 or 16 years old.
Taking up residence in a video store or outside a bus station. Learning to do drugs, beg,
steal, flee, and fight. Not to be afraid anymore. Integrating into a new world. Adjusting. From the inside this film paints a picture
of five Bakoroman, in pursuit of a better life.
Director Biography
Simplice Ganou studied sociology at the University of Ouagadougou. He has studied film at
the University of Saint Louis in Senegal. He worked in different areas of film and has directed
a couple of documentaries, among them Ato (2011) and Un peuple, un bus, une foi (2010).
“Here I stand, able to see and to share invisible pieces of life: those which make the
trite of life of people with winding destinies. From there this movie became possible:
a movie about the young I see every day and with whom I share pieces of life, with
whom I talk and who I see changing, every single day, from breathings to real blows”

at his isolation drive him to try to end the
feud, even though it may cost him his life.
Director Biography
Joshua Marston received an MA in Political Science from the University of Chicago and an
MFA in Filmmaking from New York University. He wrote and directed Maria Full of Grace,
which garnered numerous awards and an Academy Award nomination for best actress. His
films were recently added to the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection. He has
also directed episodes of several well-known TV-series, including HBO’s Six Feet Under and
How to Make it in America. He has been a recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts
Fellowship and of residencies at the MacDowell and Millay artist colonies.
“The dominant mythology of blood feuds (in Albania or elsewhere) is that
they are inexorable, archaic traditions practiced by violent, backward
people. My intention was to turn this view on its head, to humanize
the portrayal by telling an everyday story of one particular family
through the points of view of sympathetic, ordinary individuals.”

Rain in the Mirror
india
Director: Nilanjan Bhattacharya Production Company: Chhayabaji Films
A documentary about three generations
of men from the same family, living in Sikkim, India, near the Tibetan border in the
Himalayas.
Modern life meets tradition in a film that
director Bhattacharya spent nine years
shooting. Will 10-year-old Sonam be able
to take over his grandfather’s magical powers, enabling him to bring forth and stop
the rain at will? A feat that Sonam’s father
Duduk never accomplished. Duduk is the
lost sheep of the family, torn between the
old and the new and helpless to stop himself
from playing the lottery.
Grandpa Dorji’s mythical powers are just
as a looming presence over the family as the
mighty mountainsides of the Himalayas
over their native village of Gangtok.
Director Biography
Nilanjan Bhattacharya is a Calcutta-based filmmaker involved in film making for the last
15 years. In 2005 he received the National Film Award of India for his documentary, Under

include It’s Open, The Dark Faces of Drowning and Bengalis in the World of Fish. His recent film,
Johar Welcome to Our World on indigenous food culture of Jharkhand received the National
Film Award of India in 2010 for Best Narration Writing.
“The conflict between tradition and modernity is nothing new, but I have
never experienced it in the way I have over these nine years of shooting this
film; I realise, with surprise, that a large general process that I used to take for
granted – the change and mutation of traditional ways of life and thinking –
became something quite different when I studied it closely in a micro-arena
such as the lives of the Bhutia family in the shadow of the Himalayas.”
