BEREA COLLEGE GENERAL STUDIES GSTR 203 US Traditions E Pluribus Unum, Unum, Spring 2006 CREATIVE PROJECTS, PRESENTATIONS, ENGAGEMENTS Creative engagements will involve many “things,” such as mini individual and group projects, presentations, activities related to readings, organized discussion (debates), teaching, games, artistic activities, direct cultural activities, etc. Students will be encouraged to suggest activities in relation to their own learning. Such engagements will be done throughout the semester. Before engagements are pursued, students will develop guidelines with professor that articulate the nature and assessment of particular projects. This will help all students to develop multiple modes of learning!! ACCOUNTABILITY CLASS LOG Each student is to construct a class participation log to log his/her contributions to the class, and to indicate what is gained from the class. The log can be done in a narrative format or logged by date/entries with short descriptive entries. The log is to be turned in at the end of the semester (see due date); however, each student can meet with me periodically throughout the semester to address any matter regarding this assignment. Note that I practice an open door policy! Each student will have a concrete TYPED document at the end of the semester outlining the nature of his/her contributions (oral and general participation) to GSTR 203, and what he/she gained from the class. This log will help me in my assessment of your contributions, etc. regarding your final grade. Taking ownership of your own learning is important!! EXTRA CREDIT (Self-Initiated Engagements…..!) Extra credit will be given for attending (self-initiated) special events, relevant community activities/events, convocations, student associations, and related matters in the context of making connections to GSTR 203. In order for extra credit to be earned, you must share in community your experiences with the class and allude to them in any of your assignments. What is shard with peers must be connected to the course. Whenever this is done, I need to be informed beforehand. This is an open assignment without written guidelines. You have the autonomy to assume this responsibility. However, make sure that what you do is always related to the course. We will decide on the number of Self-Initiated Engagements in community. PS: Guidelines and assessment rubrics will be decided on for the Midterm and Final Dr. Winston T. Gittens
