BOSTON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH
GUIDELINES FOR REDUCED-TIME ENGAGEMENT OF FULL TIME FACULTY
Boston University School of Public Health is committed to recruiting and retaining outstanding faculty.
To realize that commitment, the School should have employment options for full time faculty for whom
a reduced-time engagement is appropriate at particular points in their careers.
The following guidelines provide a general framework for reduced time faculty engagements at BUSPH.
These guidelines are intended to supplement existing BU policies and no elements in these guidelines
should be considered to supersede those policies. These guidelines are not applicable for situations that
are already covered by other policies, such as FMLA or disability.

Proposals for reduced-time faculty engagements may be initiated by the faculty member or by the
department chair and will require mutual agreement
Offers for reduced time employment will be made in writing by the department chair and must be
approved and signed by both the dean and the faculty member.
BUSPH faculty on reduced time engagements may be continued on rolling appointments or they
may, by mutual agreement, be signed to fixed-term contracts, whichever provides the best fit
between their situation and the School’s needs.
Faculty who continue on rolling appointments will be subject to the non-continuance provisions in
the BU Faculty Handbook section on Appointment and Continuance of Appointments for Full-Time
Faculty on the Medical Campus.
Salary arrangements for each year of a reduced time engagement must be specified in the letter of
offer. The level of compensation in each year should be consistent with the time commitment for
that year and the anticipated contribution to the work of the School. Salary arrangements should
generally be in the form of guaranteed annual minimums.
Faculty on a reduced time engagement may return to full time engagement with the express written
approval of the department chair and the dean. Salary will be increased appropriately to reflect a
return to full time engagement.
If a non-continuance notice is issued to a faculty member on a reduced-time engagement, the 100%
of salary specified for the initial year of non-continuance shall be based on the reduced-time salary.
Benefits for faculty on reduced-time engagements will be based on applicable University policies.
