Lions Club of Toronto Inc Look, Mum, no boat ! Zone 4 – Region 2 – Lions District 201N3 Bulletin PRESIDENT‟S REPORT FEBRUARY January was a relatively quiet month, as far as the Lions‟ activities were concerned. The BBQ at Blackalls was enjoyed by all who attended. Unfortunately, I had mobility problems and couldn‟t make it. On the Saturday before the markets we had a working bee , where we cleaned up the van and remarked the market sites. The next job to be done is to wash and possibly polish the exterior of the van. The weather next day for the Markets was very doubtful, consequently many stallholders chose not to come, and our takings were down about 50%, although van takings were reasonably good. Many Lions and their Ladies attended John and Judy Steele‟s 50th Wedding Anniversary on Friday 20th and all enjoyed the occasion, which was held in and around the new shelter at Lions Park. Congratulations John and Judy. Remember to BOOK IN for the YOY dinner – Frank needs to know whether your partner is coming or whether you’re attending by yourself. There are currently lots of rumours circulating about the latest Workplace Health & Safety legislation and its effect on volunteers. Why not wait until the professionals have actually gone through it before you decide whether there’s any effect on us? My reading says that it still only applies to paid workforces, but I’ve been known to be wrong. Clean Up Australia is coming again, and th before the next Bulletin. The date is 4 March, and the Club needs to register if we want to be involved. We could also register as a site supervisor. No time to wait for the Board meeting on this one. PO Box 25 Toronto, NSW 2283 The Stranger A few years after I was born, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our small town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was around from then on. As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my young mind, he had a special niche. My parents were complementary instructors: Mum taught me good from evil, and Dad taught me to obey. But the stranger... he was our storyteller. He would keep us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries and comedies. If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always knew the answers about the past, understood the present and even seemed able to predict the future! He took my family to the first league game of the season. He made me laugh, and he made me cry. The stranger never stopped talking, but Dad didn't seem to mind. Sometimes, Mum would get up quietly while the rest of us were shooshing each other to listen to what he had to say, and she would go to the kitchen for peace and quiet. (I wonder now if she ever prayed for the stranger to leave.) Dad ruled our household with certain moral convictions, but the stranger never felt obligated to honour them. Profanity, for example, was not allowed in our home - not from us, our friends or any visitors. Our long time visitor, however, got away with four-letter words that burned my ears and made my dad squirm and my mother blush. My Dad didn't permit the liberal use of alcohol but the stranger encouraged us to try it on a regular basis. He made cigarettes look cool, cigars manly, and pipes distinguished. He talked freely (much too freely!) about sex. His comments were sometimes blatant, sometimes suggestive, and generally embarrassing. I now know that my early concepts about relationships were influenced strongly by the stranger. Time after time, he opposed the values of my parents, yet he was seldom rebuked... And NEVER asked to leave. More than fifty years have passed since the stranger moved in with our family. He has blended right in and is not nearly as fascinating as he was at first. Still, if you could walk into my parents' house today, you would still find him sitting over in his corner, waiting for someone to listen to him talk and watch him draw his pictures. His name?....We just call him 'TV.' Now, he has a wife. We call her 'Computer.' Their first child is "Cell Phone". Second child "I Pod " To help save the economy, the Government will announce next month that the Immigration Department will start deporting seniors (instead of illegals) in order to lower Social Security and Medicare costs. Older people are easier to catch (offer them a free anything) and they won‟t remember how to get back home. I started to cry when I thought of you. Then it dawned on me ... oh, crap ... I'll see you on the bus! February 2012 Dear Keith, Just a short note about the workshop I attended that was organised by Ann Ryan and yourself. It was a well presented workshop. We had the right number for the room and well setup. I had a good opportunity to meet other attendee from other clubs. It was a friendly atmosphere. I learned more about the history of Lions, where it started and how it started in Australia, how many countries in the world have taking part in this special charity work. I learned about how many members there are in Lions Organiations, the hierachical system in Lions. We could find out more about Lionism in its website. We also were explained how the membership fee was distributed through the Lions Organisation. It certainly interesting time. I am looking forward for other workshop that could be provided by the Training Chairman. I could not finish without saying thanks to both presenters, Ann and yourself, and of course the nice lunch that Ann provided. Lunch time break gave us an opportunity to chat with other attendee as well. The timing was good that allowed us to ask and made comments during the presentation. Overall, it was good, friendly and I learned more about Lions. However, I would like to see a map of zones and clubs that related to our district to give us a vision of appreciation of how DG and Zone chairmen travel to visit their own clubs. Best regards, Lay Siv Training for incoming officers will be changed this year to encompass a wider range of members. LDT Chair Ann Ryan has been talking to our district‟s leaders and will be restructuring the club officer training so that it‟s more interactive, and so that it‟s aimed at the entire board of a club, not just the president, secretary and treasurer. The intention is to take some of the mystery out of all positions so that more Lions may be prepared to take roles on. Page 8 Lions Club of Toronto Inc. PO Box 25 Toronto, NSW 2283 Monastery Life A young monk arrives at the monastery. He is assigned to helping the other monks in copying the old canons and laws of the church by hand. He notices, however, that all of the monks are copying from copies, not from the original manuscript. So, the new monk goes to the head abbot to question this, pointing out that if someone made even a small error in the first copy, it would never be picked up! In fact, that error would be continued in all of the subsequent copies. The head monk, says, 'We have been copying from the copies for centuries, but you make a good point, my son.' He goes down into the dark caves underneath the monastery where the original manuscripts are held as archives in a locked vault that hasn't been opened for hundreds of years. Hours go by and nobody sees the old abbot. So, the young monk gets worried and goes down to look for him. He sees him banging his head against the wall and wailing. "We missed the R ! We missed the R ! We missed the %@# R !" His forehead is all bruised and he is crying uncontrollably. The young monk asks the old abbot, 'What's CELEB wrong, father?' With a choking voice, the old abbot replies, 'The word was... R ATE Fable of the porcupine It was the coldest winter ever. Many animals died because of the cold. The porcupines, realizing the situation, decided to group together to keep warm. This way they covered and protected themselves; but the quills of each one wounded their closest companions. After awhile, they decided to distance themselves one from the other and they began to die, alone and frozen. So they had to make a choice: either accept the quills of their companions or disappear from the Earth. Wisely, they decided to go back to being together. They learned to live with the little wounds caused by the close relationship with their companions in order to receive the warmth that came from the others. This way they were able to survive. Moral of the story: The best relationship is not the one that brings together perfect people, but is when each individual learns to live with the imperfections of others and can admire the other person's good qualities. The real moral of the story......LEARN TO LIVE WITH THE PRICKS IN YOUR LIFE. Farm economics? George and Tim McGillivray saw an ad in the Daily Newspaper in Cohuna, Victoria, and bought a donkey for $100. The farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day. The next morning the farmer drove up and said, "Sorry, fellows, I have some bad news, your donkey died last night" George and Tim replied, "Well, then just give us our money back." The farmer said, "Can't do that. I went and spent it already." They said, "OK then, just bring us the dead donkey." The farmer asked, "What in the world would you do with a dead donkey?" George said, "We're gunna raffle him off." The farmer said, "You can't raffle off a dead donkey!" Tim said, "We sure can! We don't hafta tell anybody he's dead!" A couple of weeks later, the farmer ran into George and Tim at the local grocery store and asked. "What'd you fellers do with that dead donkey?" They said, “We raffled him off like we said we would." Tim said, “We sold 500 tickets for two dollars each and made a profit of $898." The farmer said, “My Lord, didn't anyone complain?" George said, "Well, the bloke who won got upset. So we gave him his two dollars back." George and Tim now work for the government as financial advisers to the Treasurer. ONE OF THE HEAVIEST BURDENS A MAN CAN CARRY IS A CHIP ON HIS SHOULDER February 2012 Page 9 Lions Club of Toronto Inc. PO Box 25 Toronto, NSW 2283 . OLD FART PRIDE Old Farts are easy to spot at sporting events; particularly during the playing of the National Anthem. Old Farts remove their caps and stand at attention and sing without embarrassment. They know the words and believe in them. Old Farts remember World War II, Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal , Normandy and Hitler. They remember the Atomic Age, the Korean War, The Cold War, the Jet Age and the Moon Landing. They remember the 50 plus Peacekeeping Missions from 1945 to 2005, not to mention Vietnam . If you bump into an Old Fart on the pavement they will apologize. If you pass an Old Fart on the street, he will nod or tip his cap to a lady. Old Farts trust strangers and are courtly to women. Old Farts hold the door for the next person and always, when walking, make certain the lady is on the inside for protection. Old Farts get embarrassed if someone curses in front of women and children and they don't like any filth or dirty language on TV or in movies. Old Farts have moral courage and personal integrity. They seldom brag unless it's about their children or grandchildren. It's the Old Farts who know our great country is protected, not by politicians, but by the young men and women in the military serving their country. This country needs Old Farts with their work ethic, sense of responsibility, pride in their country and decent values. We need them now more than ever. Thank God for Old Farts!
