The Miracle Garden Is Open!
On July 8, the Victoria General
Hospital Foundation held a
ribbon cutting ceremony for the
grand opening of our Miracle
Garden. This almost entirely donorfunded project will be used by
patients, family members and
staff alike as a place of restoration,
healing, and to become closer to
nature and their community.
This new healing garden will provide
patients with an environment that
will encourage and support their
health, allowing them to see growth
and new life in the midst of their
illness or injury. It will also allow our
staff to enjoy the beauty of nature
during their breaks.
There is credible scientific evidence
that this type of outdoor setting
promotes overall well-being, reduces
stress, and has significant benefits
for psychological, physiological, and
behavioural health.
This rejuvenating open-air space
provides our community with a
multi-sensory experience
consisting of a large variety of
colourful flowers, a unique
children’s area, and a large
water feature.
We want to thank everyone who
contributed to this special project
for their support. With your help,
we have raised over $1.5 million
of the $1.8 million needed.
We hope you will take pride in

an important project that will not
only benefit the hospital, but also
the community as a whole!

Vic Foundation Provides New State-of-the-Art
Blood Pressure Monitors For Surgi-Centre
Thanks to the generosity of our
faithful supporters in 2013, over
$100,000 worth of equipment was
purchased this year. These new items
help our clinical care staff improve
their quality of care and provide a
better experience for our patients.
An anonymous supporter has
generously provided the hospital
with new, world-class blood pressure
monitors that profoundly impact
patient care by enabling more
accurate blood pressure monitoring.
The machines have a new
technology that allows for greater
reliability even in difficult situations
such as measuring hypertensive
patients or patients who are not able
to sit still. These new machines have
the highest sensitivity when taking
readings, which benefits patients by
allowing them to be as comfortable
as possible.
Foundation supporters also
enhanced care at our hospital by
providing a ceiling hoist system
which lifts and moves patients in a
safe manner. This ceiling-mounted
system can reach any area in the
room, which enables the floor
and surrounding areas to be less
cluttered and offers a safer space
for staff to provide care (especially
in smaller spaces such as the ICU).
This system is easy to move and
helps to save staff time, giving them
more time to focus on providing
better care to our patients.
Thanks to the generosity of our
community, our Foundation has also
been able to purchase additional
automatic external defibrillators
(AEDs) for the Vic. These machines
are used to treat cardiac arrest,
which happens when the heart stops
beating suddenly. These machines
are battery-operated, portable, and
can be used by almost anyone. They
can be found in a variety of places
around the hospital in case of
an emergency and can make a
remarkable difference in the ability
to save a patient’s life.
Another item purchased recently
thanks to our supporters is an
intubation scope. This portable
bronchoscope is used in a variety
of settings, but is especially helpful in emergency or intensive care
situations. It benefits patients by
providing the medical staff with a
consistently clear view of the airway
and tube placement, which assists in
quick intubation.
In addition to the above, many
of the new pieces purchased help
our clinical care staff to move
patients from one place to another
without injuring our patients or
themselves. These items include
sliding sheets, repositioning slings,
and bariatric wheelchairs (which
provide a 28” wide seat for larger
patients).

Past Patient Pays Tribute To Vic Oncology Team For
Clean Bill Of Health
Carl Pitura owes his life to former
Vic Oncologist Dr. Ian Maxwell.
When Carl was diagnosed with
cancer in 1995, he required surgery
right away and began chemotherapy
treatment in the Vic’s oncology
department in January 1996, when
the department was still located in
the cold, dark basement.
In total, Carl had 34 chemo
treatments at the Vic and 23
radiation treatments at St. Boniface
hospital. He learned to nurture his
body physically and mentally to
prepare for his aggressive treatment.
Dr. Maxwell’s optimism was
something that always kept Carl
going on the hardest of days. “You
are such a young man,” he would
always say. “We are not going to
give in.”
The compassionate care provided by
Dr. Maxwell left a lasting impression
on Carl.
“I want to recognize and pay tribute
to Dr. Maxwell and the oncology
nurses who helped me through such
a tough time,” says Carl, who has
now been cancer free for over 18
years. “Since my remission in 1996,
we’ve been spared with such a good
bill of health and I owe it to the Vic
and the amazing medical team that I
had.”
Carl and his wife Clara were so
impressed with the bright and
spacious Buhler Cancer Centre
that was constructed in 2008 that
they started an Endowment Fund
with the Foundation. Endowments
provide a never-ending source of
income that can be directed to any
area of the hospital. The prinicpal
donation is invested and only the
interest is expended. Carl and Clara’s
fund makes a direct impact on
patient care in the hospital’s
oncology outpatient clinic.

Seeing the Buhler Cancer
Centre open was a heartwarming
experience for the Pituras, and
just this past month, they were
grateful to celebrate the opening of
the Miracle Garden, a restorative
environment designed to provide
care for the mind, body, and spirit. It
has been gratifying for the Pituras to
see the Vic’s Oncology department
come full circle from its humble
beginnings in the basement of the
Victoria General Hospital.

Innovative For Her Heart’s Sake Project To Begin In Fall
The Vic is preparing to launch For Her Heart’s Sake, an essential genderspecific project designed to address the #1 killer of women: heart disease.
For Her Heart’s Sake will give hope to women living with chronic
heart disease and create survivors. Our goals are to slow down and
prevent further damage, pain, and complications from the disease and
to give better care to women in order to enable them to live the healthiest
lives possible. For Her Heart’s Sake will begin this fall.

Vic Foundation, Manitoba Medical Service Foundation
Funds Preoperative Exercise Research
Victoria General Hospital Surgeon
Dr. Krista Hardy has been
researching the impact of
preoperative exercise on fitness
outcomes following bariatric surgery
through the support of a $22,000
grant jointly provided by the Vic
Foundation and Manitoba Medical
Service Foundation (MMSF).
Canada has one of the highest
obesity rates in the world and the
need for publicly-funded bariatric
surgeries has dramatically increased.
The objective of Dr. Hardy’s
research is to test the benefits of
a preoperative exercise plan
provided to patients who are
waiting for bariatric surgery.
The desired outcome is an
improvement in overall exercise
ability and capacity. Other positive
benefits may include weight loss,
strength gain, and a change to
overall body composition.
“This research will hopefully show
how important exercise programs
for patients having bariatric surgery
are,” says Dr. Hardy. “Exercise is
important for anyone but I believe
that this research will benefit the
patient’s health both before and after
their bariatric surgery, which will
ultimately be beneficial to their
overall health.”
The hope is that preoperative
exercise intervention will be
successful and positively impact
the general level of fitness patients
will have post-bariatric surgery. As
patients are involved in an exercise
routine before their surgery, the
hypothesis is that their level of
exercise will have improved postsurgery. Permanent lifestyle changes
such as regular exercise is considered
one of the most successful ways to
help maintain long term weight loss.
If this study is successful and shows
benefits to patients undergoing this
surgery, an application will be made
to Manitoba Health to consider
incorporating routine preoperative
exercise for all patients waiting for
bariatric surgery so they can
continue to benefit from a healthy
lifestyle after surgery.
Since 2012, Victoria General
Hospital has been the only Manitoba
hospital to offer minimally invasive
bariatric surgery. This exclusive
program has received accolades
from numerous accreditation bodies
for its unique interdisciplinary team
approach to care. The specialized
team includes a clinical resource
nurse, dietitian, kinesiologist, and
a psychologist. This acclaimed
program has enhanced the quality
of life of many patients by helping
them avoid additional health
concerns associated with their
obesity.
