MAT 382H: Mathematics for Teachers

Course Content: MAT 382 is a relatively new course for the Concurrent Teacher Education Programme.
This course discusses school mathematics from an advanced viewpoint. We will discuss topics such as
recreational math (thinking methods), counting and probability, transformation and symmetry, algebra,
trigonometry and functions.

throughout the term.
Textbook: Mathematics for High School Teachers: An Advanced Perspective, by Z. Usiskin, A. Peressini,
E.A. Mavhisotto and D. Stanley. This book covers most of the mathematics topics in the school curriculum
and future teachers may want to have it in their own personal library. If you do not wish to purchase the
book, it will be on reserve in the library. Certain topics will based on the notes of Dr. Réka Szász, who
originally designed this course.

Homework: Eight homework assignments will be given. The lowest homework mark will be dropped.
Homework is due at the beginning of the tutorial section; late homework will not be accepted.
Peer Teaching: Small groups of students (approximately 4–5) will research a topic and teach the
material in class.
