SPECIAL CONSIDERATION PROCESS FOR MISSED TESTS What do I do if I miss a test in my Sociology course? Students who miss a test due to circumstances beyond their control (e.g. illness or an accident) can request that the Department grant them special consideration. You must present your case to the Department (not the instructor) by completing an online Special Consideration Request at: https://utmapp.utm.utoronto.ca/SpecialRequest Note: The system only supports Microsoft Internet Explorer and Firefox for the time being. Original supporting documentation (e.g. medical certificate, accident report) is to be brought to Joanna Trochanowski, Undergraduate Assistant in the Sociology Department, Room 3220, Davis Building or submitted in the drop-box located outside the Sociology office. Note: ROSI declarations are not accepted as supporting documentation. Deadlines You have up to one (1) week from the date of the missed test to submit your request and supporting documentation. (Late requests will NOT be considered without a "letter of explanation" as to why the request is late.) Decisions A departmental committee evaluates each request, and provides the Undergraduate Assistant with the decision. You will be contacted by the Undergraduate Assistant who will inform you of the decision. This will be in the form of an email sent to your utoronto email account. Note: It is your responsibility to ensure your email account is working and able to receive emails. Claims that a departmental decision was not received will NOT be considered as a reason for further consideration. Contact the Undergraduate Assistant should you NOT receive notification of your decision within 1 week of submission. Make-up Tests If your request is APPROVED and a make-up test is required, you will write the make-up test on the designated date selected by the department (as indicated in the course syllabus) and applies to all Sociology courses. Page 1 of 2 Reweighting of Grades If your request is APPROVED and a make-up test is not available, a reweighting of your grades will apply. Feel free to contact your instructor on how your marks will be reweighted. Medical Documentation Medical certificates http://www.utm.utoronto.ca/registrar/sites/files/registrar/public/shared/pdfs/forms/medcert_web.pdf MUST include the statement "This Student was unable to write the test on date(s) for medical reasons". Documentation MUST show that the physician was consulted within ONE day of the test date. A statement merely confirming a report of illness made by the student is NOT acceptable. What do I do if I miss a final exam in my Sociology course? You must petition to the Office of the Registrar if you miss a final exam. You are also advised to make yourself aware of University regulations concerning final exams. http://www.utm.utoronto.ca/registrar/current-students/petitions It is your responsibility to follow the appropriate procedures and submit requests for special consideration on time. Failure to do so may result in the committee denying your request.
