Talk about the new name;
Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center.
The Eppley Cancer Center is now known as
the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center.
The naming recognizes a gift from Pamela
Buffett and her late husband, Fred, to the
University of Nebraska Foundation. He died
in 1997 of kidney cancer. Fred Buffett was
a first cousin to investor and businessman
Warren Buffett of Omaha.
Where will the Fred & Pamela Buffett
Cancer Center be located? What will the
facility include?
The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer
Center, formerly the Eppley Cancer
Center, will be built on the west side of
the UNMC campus and will consist of a
research tower with 98 laboratories, a
multidisciplinary outpatient clinic and a
108-bed hospital dedicated to oncology.
The new facility will be almost 700,000
square feet.
How much will it cost and from where will
funding come?
The project is estimated to cost $323
million, with funding coming from public
and private donations. The University of
Nebraska Medical Center will receive $50
million in state funds, $35 million over
10 years from the City of Omaha and
$5 million over the next 10 years from
Douglas County. Private support totaling
$90 million has also been pledged,
and The Nebraska Medical Center has
generously pledged $120 million.

There are many individuals to thank without

Buffett Cancer Center that truly will cement
UNMC’s place among the best academic
health centers in the nation. University of
Nebraska President J.B. Milliken for making

high priority in the University of Nebraska
capital campaign. Omaha philanthropists
Mike and Gail Yanney championed the Fred
& Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, seeing that
it was good for the citizens of Nebraska and

Will the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer
Center have an effect on achieving
Comprehensive Cancer Center designation?
Achieving Comprehensive Cancer Center
designation from the National Cancer
Institute (NCI) will place the Fred &
Pamela Buffett Cancer Center among only
41 cancer centers nationwide with this
prestigious designation. Cancer centers
must demonstrate expertise in laboratory,
clinical and population-based research.
The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center
will enhance the already excellent research
The support for the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center from state, city and
county officials has been overwhelming. In early 2012, Gov. Dave Heineman
approved the state budget that included $50 million in funding for the Fred &
Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. Nebraska State Senator John Nelson, District 6,
was instrumental in sponsoring the bill in the Nebraska Legislature. The Douglas
County Board of Commissioners voted 6-1 in October 2012 to provide $5 million
over the next 10 years to the project. The Omaha City Council passed two
ordinances in October 2012 that will provide $35 million to help with construction
of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. “We are grateful that the city of
Omaha, the state of Nebraska and Douglas County are interested in supporting
the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, which will cement Omaha’s reputation
as a leader in cancer care, save lives and provide state-of-the-art treatment and
research,” Dr. Cowan said. “It also will create thousands of jobs in the metro area
and infuse millions into state and local economies.”

2012 Ambassador
of Hope Gala
2012 & 2013
Cattlemen’s Ball
The 2012 Ambassador of Hope Gala was held Tuesday, Oct.
23 at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha and raised more
than $725,000 for cancer research at the Fred & Pamela
Buffett Cancer Center. The honored guest was Jim Clifton,
chairman and CEO of Gallup, who received the Ambassador
of Hope Award. The Ambassador of Hope Award is given to
an individual who has made a significant contribution to the
fight against cancer through research, patient care activities
or through raising public awareness about cancer. The Margre
and Chuck Durham Spirit of Nebraska Award was given to Mike
and Gail Yanney. This award is given to an individual or group
who has significantly impacted the fight against cancer in
Nebraska. The Ambassador of Hope Gala was attended by 600
people. The honorary chairs were Jim and Shirley Young. The
general event chair was Jane Rips.
Hosted by the Allen and Shelly Clark family, the 2012
Cattlemen’s Ball took place at the Stone Creek Event Center
in McCool Junction, Neb. on June 1-2. Raising a total of $1.4
million, ninety percent of that amount, or $1.2 million, was
donated to cancer research at the Fred & Pamela Buffett
Cancer Center. It was the third consecutive year that the
Cattlemen’s Ball raised over $1 million. Guests enjoyed a
myriad of activities, including beef meals, live and silent
auctions, a fashion show, wine tasting, art show, general store
and an evening concert by country music star Justin Moore.
Ball attendees were also able to visit with graduate students
from the Eppley Institute about cancer research projects
supported by funds from the Cattlemen’s Ball.

THE AMBASSADOR OF HOPE AWARD.
Hosted by Ralph and Beverly Holzfaster and Neal Hansen, the
2013 Cattlemen’s Ball took place at the Hanging H Ranch in
the Sandhills of Nebraska on June 7-8, raising a total of $2.12
million, the largest amount ever raised at this event. Ninety
percent of that amount, or approximately $1.9 million, will
go to support cancer research at the Fred & Pamela Buffett
Cancer Center. 4,500 tickets were sold for this annual event.
Some of the events held over the two days included a ranch
rodeo, stock-handling demonstration, western fashion show
and live and silent auctions. The highlight of the Saturday
evening live auction was the $285,000 sale of a John Deere
9360R 4WD tractor donated by the Howard G. Buffett
Foundation. Multi-platinum country music band Lonestar was
the Saturday evening entertainment.
The 2014 Cattlemen’s Ball will take place on June 6-7 at the
Hoot Owl Ranch in Harrisburg, Neb., south of Scottsbluff in the
Wildcat Hills.

Kicks For A Cure
Leona & Harry Helmsley
Foundation
The seventh annual Kicks for a Cure soccer exhibition, a benefit
for the Liz’s Legacy Cancer Fund, was held April 20-21, 2012.
The fund was started by the Karnes family in memory of their
wife and mother, the late Dr. Liz Karnes, who died in 2003 after
a battle with ovarian cancer. More than $230,000 was raised for
local cancer research efforts at Creighton University’s Hereditary
Cancer Center and the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center.
The 2013 event, held on April 19-20, raised more than $310,000,
bringing the eight-year total raised to more than $1.4 million.
The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust awarded
a $3.5 million grant to the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer
Center to fund the Northern Great Plains Personalized Breast
Cancer Program.
High school and collegiate soccer teams played exhibition
soccer games at Creighton University’s Morrison Stadium.
Other activities included a dinner, silent auction and check
presentation, a soccer skills clinic for underprivileged youth
and an autograph session with players. Funds raised through
sponsorships, donations and the sale of game and dinner
tickets benefit the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and the
Creighton University Hereditary Cancer Center.
LONESTAR PERFORMS AT THE CATTLEMEN’S BALL.
A $5.9 million project, this program will be a collaborative effort
between the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, Avera Cancer
Institute and rural health care centers across the Northern Great
Plains. This program will utilize the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer
Center’s state-wide affiliate cancer center network in Nebraska
and Avera’s network of more than 300 health care locations in
five states to provide breast cancer patients with state-of-theart cancer genomic analysis and personalized cancer treatment
options. Access to the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center’s
Breast Cancer Collaborative Registry will also be available.
Breast biopsies from 1,000 breast cancer patients in Nebraska,
South Dakota, North Dakota and Wyoming will undergo DNA
sequence analysis to identify the entire spectrum of each genetic
mutation in breast cancer over the next three years. Furthermore,
these patients will be enrolled in the Breast Cancer Collaborative
Registry (BCCR), which collects information from breast cancer
patients on demographics, medical and family history, exposure
history, diet, exercise, quality of life and course of treatment.
Biospecimens will be collected for research on biomarkers to
assess the risk of developing breast cancer, as well as markers of
prognosis. The total genomic information will also be used to help
oncologists identify personalized cancer care for each patient.
“The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center is very fortunate to
be partnering with Avera Health/Avera Cancer Institute and
The Helmsley Charitable Trust on this endeavor that will provide
access to personalized care to so many breast cancer patients in
the rural Midwest,” said Kenneth H. Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., director of
the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. “To effectively reduce
disparities in health care, particularly in rural areas, a collaborative
effort is essential to reach as many patients as possible.”
The five states involved in the project are the most sparsely
populated states in the U.S. According to the U.S. Census Bureau,
in 2010 Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and
Wyoming ranked 45, 48, 49, 50 and 51 in population density
(includes District of Columbia and Puerto Rico). In addition to
being uninsured or underinsured, many patients in rural areas
face significant barriers to health care. These include a shortage
of health care providers due to recruitment and retention issues
in rural areas and lack of public transportation. This project will
give patients in rural areas access to cutting-edge cancer research
and patient care in local communities, with physicians making
treatment decisions based on the genetic makeup of an individual
patient’s tumor.

Mryna & Bob Krohn
Bob and Mryna Krohn’s gift to the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center combines two of the
couple’s philanthropic interests: education and medicine. Given during the 50-year celebration
of the Eppley Institute, their $1 million gift established the Robert F. & Myrna L. Krohn Chair
in Cancer Research, the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center’s most prestigious award
recognizing excellence in cancer research and institutional leadership. “I am deeply grateful for
Bob and Myrna’s generous gift,” said the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center Director Kenneth
Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., who currently holds the chair. “It helps support the infrastructure of the
Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and makes funds available for cancer research and other
programmatic activities. The Krohns have been long-time supporters of our work, so it is fitting
that their names will always be associated with the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and
the director.”
Lin & Mike Simmonds
Omahans Mike and Lin Simmonds are passionate about giving back to the community and to
helping advance cancer research. Their $1 million gift establishes a research fund that supports
cancer research initiatives in radiation oncology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
The first project explores a novel discovery by UNMC scientists that could lead to new diagnostic
capabilities and therapy options for patients with hormone refractory or newly diagnosed
advanced prostate cancer. The Simmonds’ gift also supports creation of the Midwest Radiation
Oncology Coalition, which offers cutting-edge clinical trials to patients across Nebraska. In
addition, it gathers research data throughout a network of affiliated oncology clinics in Nebraska,
South Dakota and Iowa. “The Simmonds’ generous support has provided the catalyst necessary to
develop translational research projects that could result in a clinical paradigm shift in the diagnosis
and treatment of advanced prostate cancer,” said Charles Enke, M.D., chairman and professor,
UNMC Department of Radiation Oncology.

Janice & Larry Stoney
“We’ll beat this.” Those were the first words Larry Stoney said to his wife, Janice, when she told
him she had breast cancer. That was over 30 years ago and Larry’s words still hold true. Today
the two live in Phoenix, and Janice is the picture of health. To show their appreciation of the Fred
& Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, they made an irrevocable bequest with a gift of a life insurance
policy to support cancer research at UNMC. “The people there, the services, the professionalism,
the progress that’s been made — it’s indescribable,” Janice said. “We want to see Dr. Kenneth
Cowan and the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center researchers be able to continue their
progress in this fight.”
Inez Mortensen
From the estate of Inez Mortensen, a gift of $50,000 has been provided to support cancer
research at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. The gift was directed to the Hope Fund for
Cancer Research at the University of Nebraska Foundation.
Before her death on March 17, 2012, Mortensen chose to support cancer research in memory of her
brothers, Christian and Richard, and sister, Marian, who all died from cancer.
“By giving, you help your fellow man have a better life physically, spiritually and you have a good
feeling that you have helped,” Mortensen said. “To achieve my charitable goal in curing diseases,
I support an organization where my gift will be used 100 percent for research to educate, relieve
suffering and find a cure.”
An Omaha native, Mortensen was a longtime supporter of the University of Nebraska. She
consistently contributed to the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center during the last 10 years of her
life. Those gifts were modest compared to the $50,000 gift provided through her estate.
“Like many whose lives have been touched by cancer, Mortensen was so passionate about
putting an end to the effects of this disease,” said Tom Thompson, senior director of
development, University of Nebraska Foundation. “Her gift is not only a wonderful tribute to her
siblings but also a generous investment in the advancements being made at the Fred & Pamela
Buffett Cancer Center.”
Janet Voelker, executor of Mortensen’s estate and a longtime friend, said Mortensen never married,
so her siblings, Marian, Richard and Christian, meant the world to her.
“She would want me to mention them by name because they were so precious to her, and she
would want them also to be named part of this legacy she has left UNMC,” Voelker said. “As for
me, her friend, I was one among many, and we all enjoyed and treasured our relationship with her.
Her heart was a giving one and upon her death, her many, many charitable gifts bear witness to
this caring, loving woman of faith.”

Public support totaling $90 million has
already been pledged toward the project
by the state of Nebraska, the city of

C.L. Werner, honorary chairman of the C.L. Werner
Foundation Board, said he is honored to support the
project, saying it would be “a leading cancer center in
the world.”
“I am proud the Cancer Hospital is in Omaha and
hope everyone shares my excitement about this
state-of-the-art initiative,” he said.
Werner serves as chairman emeritus of Werner
Enterprises, Inc., one of the largest truckload motor
carriers in the nation.

Walter Scott, Jr. and his late wife, Suzanne, have
been well known for their philanthropy and
involvement in community affairs. Walter Scott
serves as chairman of the Board of Policy Advisors
for the University of Nebraska Peter Kiewit Institute,
Heritage Services and the Omaha Zoological
Society, among other leadership roles. Suzanne
passed away on Sept. 9, 2013 at the age of 83. She
was a director of the Omaha Zoological Society
and a former director of numerous community
organizations including Joslyn Art Museum, The
Salvation Army and United Way of the Midlands.

the UNMC committee of the University of
Nebraska Foundation’s comprehensive
fundraising campaign, Campaign for
Nebraska: Unlimited Possibilities.
“The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer
Center will allow the brightest minds in
cancer research and care to collaborate
on finding tomorrow’s cures, specifying
those treatments to each patient based on
their unique condition,” Kenneth Cowan,
M.D., Ph.D., said. “In this facility, medical
scientists will discover the next generation
of cancer therapies targeted toward
molecular changes in tumors, resulting
in a treatment regimen individualized for
each patient.”
The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center
is the largest facility for a project that also
includes plans for updated ambulatory
(outpatient) services at UNMC. The
project will provide 4,657 new jobs to the
metro area, infusing $537 million annually
into the economy.
The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer
Center’s floors and spaces will match
up with space in adjacent buildings,
including the Durham Outpatient Center
and Durham Research Towers. The
facility will be constructed at Dewey
Avenue and Durham Research Plaza (45th
Street) where Swanson Hall was located.
Demolition of Swanson Hall began in
spring 2013, with construction of the Fred
& Pamela Buffett Cancer Center beginning
in the fall.

In athletics, the Big Ten universities
compete against each other but now
many will join together against a
common foe — cancer.
Leaders from the universities’ cancer
centers kicked off the Big Ten Cancer
Research Consortium recently in
Chicago. They united to transform
cancer research through collaborative
oncology trials that leverage the
scientific and clinical expertise of the Big
Ten universities.
The consortium will benefit patients
because researchers will work together
to turn ideas into potential new
treatments. The clinical trials they
develop will be linked to molecular
diagnostics, enabling researchers to
understand what drives the cancers to
grow and what might be done to stop
them from growing.
Also, the consortium forms a powerful
collaboration because of the impact
each university already has made

in cancer research. A solid research
infrastructure is already in place at
each university. The consortium also
leverages geographical locations and
existing relationships among the cancer
centers.
The Big Ten Cancer Research
Consortium creates a unique teamresearch culture in which cancer leaders
will collaborate with and mentor the
research leaders of tomorrow with
the goal of improving the lives of all
cancer patients. The consortium will
provide junior faculty and fellows
the opportunity to write, conduct
and complete trials, which would not
normally be done at a single institution
or on a national level for young
investigators.

Cancer Hospital, the 98-laboratory Suzanne and Walter Scott Cancer Research Tower and a
multidisciplinary outpatient center. To be built at Dewey Avenue and Durham Research Plaza,
construction of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center is underway.
When completed, the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center
will shape cancer care, research and education in Nebraska, the
region and the world. The center is named for Fred and Pamela
Buffett. Fred Buffett passed away from kidney cancer in 1997.

A joint effort between the University of Nebraska Medical Center
and The Nebraska Medical Center, the Fred & Pamela Buffett
Cancer Center will allow researchers and clinicians to work closely
together, bringing advancements in cancer treatment and care to
patients quicker.
