INFORMATION FOR ALL STUDENTS REGARDING: LFIT 190 – SPECIAL TOPICS – DOWNHILL SKIING (also includes SNOWBOARDING) PHYA 229 – DOWNHILL SKIING (also includes SNOWBOARDING) FALL SEMESTER – 2010 LFIT 190 – Special Topics-Downhill Skiing is a new offering – effective fall semester of 2010. Do not confuse LFIT 190 with PHYA 229 – there is a difference. PHYA 229: For over 30 years PHYA 229 – Downhill Skiing has been, and continues to be offered, as a 1credit hour physical education activity course… exclusive of the LFIT component, as are all of the other 200-level PHYA courses. Other than two or three organizational meetings in the fall semester PHYA 229 typically met only during the week of skiing (all day for 5 days) in the NC mountains in early January – no “classes”, other than organization sessions, were attended during the fall semester. As part of your tuition you will pay for one hour of course credit to take PHYA 229. You must also pay the additional cost of lodging, lessons, equipment rental, lift tickets, etc. The amount of the fee depends on the “package” you choose. The fee structure for this year’s class ski class is posted at: http://www.unc.edu/depts/exercise/activities_program/Ski%20Class%20Information/Ski%202011%20In fo.pdf. For emphasis… if you have fulfilled your LFIT requirement and/or simply wish to learn to ski/snowboard or improve your skills… you can register for and take PHYA 229. This course will NOT have a LFIT component and you will not attend classes during the fall semester, other than the organizational meetings. However, you must attend the ski/snowboarding classes and ski/snowboard each of the 5 days in January 2011. The one hour credit for PHYA 229 does NOT count toward the 120 needed for graduation, although your grade in PHYA 229 will be counted when computing your GPA. LFIT 190: When the LFIT requirement began in 2006, the LFIT component became the primary focus of all courses designated as an LFIT course, but each course also included a “sport” or “physical activity” component as well. For example: LFIT 109 – Lifetime Fitness: Racquet Sports – the LFIT component is an introduction to fitness and wellness, and includes developing personal fitness programs and instruction in physical activity. The activity portion of LFIT: Racquet Sports includes instruction in badminton, tennis, and racquetball. Until the fall semester of 2010 downhill skiing or snowboarding was not one of the activity choices that could be paired with LFIT instruction. That choice is now available. All students registering for LFIT 190 – Downhill Skiing in fall of 2010 will be required to meet one hour per week throughout the semester on Fridays at 9:00, 10:00, or 11:00 AM, depending on the section for which you register. You will be required to complete all LFIT assignments just as you would in any other LFIT class, including all labs and online modules. Following your completion of the LFIT instruction at the end of the fall semester, in order to complete all course requirements and receive the 1-hour of LFIT course credit that counts toward the 120 needed for graduation, you must attend and successfully complete the ski instruction component, Jan 2 – Jan 6, 2011 in the mountains of NC. In order to do this you must be able to travel to the Boone, NC area and be there for each of those five days. Also, please note that there is an additional fee of $35 for all LFIT classes that is in addition to the charge for tuition you must pay at the beginning of the semester. This LFIT fee must be paid by the first day of class for the fall semester. You must also pay the additional cost of lodging, lessons, equipment rental, lift tickets, etc. This is the same as for PHYA 229. The amount of the fee depends on the “package” you choose.
