It is one of the backbones that herald the distinctiveness of our heritage, resonating the invigorating fusion of numerous cultures that melded together to form our uniquely dynamic ethos. We at NAMCYA echo this truth in our mission to discover and develop outstanding young Filipino musicians all over the country. In our over three decades of existence, we have fostered a solid foundation through an unwavering commitment to realizing this goal. Through the years, we have witnessed musical greats that traced their beginnings in the NAMCYA, and are now paving the way for the Filipino musical talent to be recognized around the world. As we come to our 34th year, we continue to provide a prestigious venue that allows young artists to freely express themselves through music, and have the opportunity to be part of an elite roster of vibrant talents hand-picked from hundreds of aspirants all over the archipelago. This year, we go beyond seeking and bringing out the most talented musicians from the seventeen regions of the Philippines. We go back to our roots and the pillars of our foundation as inspirations for the future. We bring the focus to the original compositions that have left an indelible mark on the Filipino music culture to cultivate awareness and appreciation of our heritage among our promising youth. On behalf of NAMCYA, we thank you for your enduring support and unrelenting faith in our advocacy of harnessing young musical talents in the country. We will continue to be steadfast in our commitment to fulfill the dreams of aspiring Filipino musicians. And we remain hopeful that all nations around the globe, including our very own, will give greater recognition for the world-class talents of the Filipino. . Veronica L. Tapia-Merk Chair, NAMCYA 2007 ii MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR I f the NAMCYA were to write its lexicon, the definition of the “Young Musician” contained therein would be “hope”. It is in the endeavors towards beauty and sublimity through the creation and re-creation of great works of music that can be found the evidences of a human goodness and truth in one of its most pure – if not purest – manifestations. Through more than three decades, the NAMCYA hand in hand with the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts has tirelessly provided avenues for the uncovering and discovering of these young Filipino individuals in whom are embodied the undimmed vision of a future that strives only to achieve the most invaluable yet most intangible revelations of all that is best in humankind. In this year, more partners have extended their assistance and cooperation to what is essentially an effort towards the crystallization and distillation of a hope that our young artists will not only be the beacons lighting our paths towards a world of mutual respect and understanding through music, but shining examples as well of a universal oneness rooted and grounded in a common revelation of the divine that lives in all our minds and souls, waiting always and only for the opportunities to express itself. The NAMCYA thanks you for your support and faith. Above all it thanks you for the gift of hope that you bestow upon it, year after year. One looks back at the achievements of the past only to be enabled to look forward to the possibilities of the future.
