Belmont, CA: Schirmer/Thomson Learning, 2006 OBJECTIVES: 1. To become acquainted with the music of East Asia and Japan, including traditional, folk and popular genres. 2. To become acquainted with representative repertoire, both sacred and secular, in the development of Western music from 600 to 1750 A.D. 3. To gain an understanding of the historic development of polyphony and tonality. 4. To become acquainted with significant composers and their musical innovations. 5. To understand and experience through listening and analysis stylistic elements pertinent to the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Baroque period. UNITS OF STUDY: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Ideally, to attend all lectures. A student will receive a WF on the 11th absence. 2. Quizzes will not be made up, but the lowest quiz grade will be dropped. 3. Four recital attendances chosen from the following, each verified by a signed recital program within a week of attendance: A. An Episcopal or Catholic church service B. The Springfield Symphony or a Chamber Orchestra of the Ozarks concert C. An Artist Series Recital D. The Springfield Regional Opera or other opera production, or a Faculty Recital. E. Additional credit of 25 points will be granted for attendance at any further professional music recital. 4. One three-page report with at least four bibliographic entries. One reference should be from the Internet. OR a collaborative small group video or audio presentation, between 5 and 10 minutes in length, following prescribed guidelines. Guidelines for papers and presentations will be supplied on a separate sheet. The paper/project will be due on Nov. 19 (or 16 16,, for people going on tour), but the preliminary outline will be due Oct. 26.. The outline is expected to be the framework upon which the 26 paper/project is built, and must include the four references. references The student may choose from the following topics: A) The Masses of Guillaume Machaut B) Significant Music Elements of the Ars Nova C) The Instrumental Families of the Renaissance D) The Life and Music of Josquin Desprez E) The Reformation Masses of Palestrina F) The Oratorios of Handel G) The Keyboard Works of J.S. Bach H) The English Madrigals of the Late Renaissance and the Early Baroque I) Martin Luther’s Musical Innovations A student may choose to complete an additional one-page report discussing the stylistic characteristics of either the early or late Baroque. A possible 25 points is attainable, and no bibliography is required.
