ACCent Magazine THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE ATHLETIC CLUB OF COLUMBUS | SINCE 1912 JULY & AUGUST 2013 From the General Manager’s Desk Sample Some Summer Fun Paul Kroll, CCM General Manager Days are longer, weather is wonderful…time to sip a cocktail on the patio and enjoy the slower pace of summer! Where at the Athletic Club is there a patio, you ask? Don’t look too hard here at 136 East Broad Street, because the patio is at the Columbus Country Club, just seven miles east of the ACC Clubhouse. We are in our third year of a very unique relationship with the CCC, and summer is the prime time for all of our members to make the most of that relationship! As an ACC member, you have dining privileges at the CCC. You are welcome to dine on the beautiful patio overlooking the putting green, as well as consider indoor dining options for a cooler, air-conditioned meal. Reservations are requested, and your charges will be billed back to your ACC account. As an ACC member, you also may play up to seven rounds of golf on the CCC’s championship Donald Ross course. Tee times are restricted, and greens and cart fees will be charged to your ACC account. Please contact their pro-shop for tee times. Of course, if you would like to take full advantage of our joint venture with the CCC, you may “enhance” your ACC membership to include greater access to their amenities. Varying membership levels allow you to take a dip in the CCC Olympic-sized pool, play a game of tennis, use the golf practice range, or make tee times with no restrictions. If you are interested in enhancing your ACC membership to include greater CCC access, please contact our Director of Membership and Marketing, Sarah Favara, for details and pricing. Within 24 hours of receiving your application to enhance, you can take full advantage of all the CCC amenities. 2 | ACCent Magazine To sample some CCC fun, all ACC members are invited to enjoy the Late Night Swim (see page 8) on Saturday, July 13. Sign up early to enjoy a full buffet, D.J., kids’ games and more from 6 to 10 P.M. And, don’t forget to join us here at the ACC on Wednesdays to Wine Down! Every Wednesday, starting at 5:30 P.M. we are pouring glasses and selling bottles of some great wines at state minimum prices. Take a break in the middle of the week to treat yourself! Speaking of wines, mark your calendar for the return of the fabulous “Summer Whites” (see page 8) party at the ACC on July 18. Wear your summer best and sample crisp, cool whites with smooth jazz to accompany your evening. A night not to be missed! Update from the ACC Facilities Committee: Construction on ACC sidewalk coming soon! You most likely know by now that The ACC will soon be under construction! You may not know that a sister project to the Bowling Alley renovation is the repair of our sidewalks surrounding the club. The Athletic Club basement has a unique feature where our footprint extends into a vault space beneath the sidewalks. Over the years, the waterproofing membrane has deteriorated and has resulted in leaking. Of particular concern is the leaking in areas where the plans for the Bowling Alley renovation overlap. Because of this construction to repair our sidewalks, members will notice changes to our front entrance starting in July. We are planning for minimum front door disruption as our front entrance will move temporarily to the Library door, just east of the main entrance. Our Front Desk operation will move into the Library to ensure that our welcoming Front Desk staff is ready and able to assist our members and direct our guests as needed. Please pardon our dust and thank you in advance for your patience and understanding. President’s Message Faces of the ACC When you walk through the revolving doors of the Athletic Club, you are enveloped in the “feel” of the clubhouse. You have just stepped out of the fray of the outside world to a more relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that is known as the ACC. Our National Register plaque on the outside of the building attests to the fact that this brick and mortar structure has played an important part in the history of our local community, our state, and our nation. But, however beautiful and architecturally significant the structure may be, it is the people inside who make it warm, welcoming and memorable. Throughout the years, members and staff have given life to traditions and vibrancy to our future. We’ve all enjoyed sharing stories about former members like Dave Thomas or Governor Rhodes, and with this issue of ACCent, we are proud to introduce a series of close-ups with current members and staff who continue to make this Club a very special place to belong. Did you know that long-time member Tom Lynch was a pole-vaulter at Ohio University? Or did you know that member Michelle Chippas was the first fulltime Executive Director of M.A.D.D. (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) in Columbus? You will meet them, along with some other familiar faces in the next few issues, and you will begin to see a pattern. Our Club is filled with interesting, intelligent, active and inspiring people. Andrew C. Smith It seems that each member President also has some favorite staffers, too. So while you read some anecdotes about the member, you will also get to see the staff person who makes the ACC a special place for them. As President of the Club, I have found that it is easy to become hyper-focused on the building. Considerations for maintenance, construction, expansion and expenditures take up much of our time at Board meetings. It is good to ground ourselves again in what has made this Club great. Meet the “Faces of the ACC.” Faces of the ACC: Page 11 Meet Courtney and Andy Neckers, with daughter Elise. May Membership Efforts Continue the Positive Trend As we’ve been reporting over the past few months, the ACC membership numbers continue to remain steady and we are still on pace to end the fiscal year with a net positive growth in membership. This is an excellent new trend, and it is thanks to the efforts of our members who act as loyal sponsors for the new ACC’ers. Our sponsors share their love of the Club by introducing family, friends and colleagues to the ACC. As a small gesture of appreciation, the Sponsors receive a $100 Club gift card, but most tell us that sharing the ACC experience is just something that comes naturally to them. We are still offering reduced initiation for the summer months, and we are happy to provide tours and brochures for any prospective member. Faces of the ACC “It’s a Club that you can grow into,” – Andy Neckers In 2003, newly relocated from Chicago as Education Services Manager for Limited Brands, Courtney Werner was looking for a convenient place to workout. Longtime loyal member Rocky Saxbe acted as her sponsor and introduced her to The Athletic Club of Columbus. As a young, single, professional woman, Courtney’s priority was fitness with a passing interest in the social aspects of the Club. Fast forward to today, and Courtney is now Courtney Neckers, and she is joined by husband Andy and daughter Elise (she will be 2 in August) at the ACC. ACC: So your life has changed a bit since 2003. How has the Club played a role? Courtney: Hmmmm. I think that it has changed right along with us. Well, not really, I think that the Club has always offered activities and amenities for the whole family, it’s just that our priorities have shifted so we are more aware of what is important to us at each particular stage in our lives. I used to really look forward to the Spring Fling and Pub Runs, and I still do, but now I can’t wait for the Spooktacular and Santa Brunch, too! Andy: It’s definitely a Club that you can grow into. ACC: Since you joined us a little later, Andy, what has been your impression of the Club, and how do you use it? Andy: I really didn’t know about the Club at all until I started dating Courtney. I converted from the gym that I was using, and I really like the old world charm here. It’s kind of exclusive, but not snooty and stuffy, and you get the classic touches like hair tonic in the locker room. I don’t buy it for personal use, and I don’t use it any other time, but I use it when I’m here because I feel that it’s part of the experience! My Company (Columbus Radiology Corporation—Andy is a Radiologist) also holds quarterly meetings here, so I am now even comfortable with the business meeting aspect of the ACC . ACC: Courtney, is it Old World Charm that makes this Club special for you? Courtney: Not solely, but I do love the atmosphere! I think the Club, because it is Private, is always a bit cleaner, and better-cared for than other gyms. But the most special thing is the warmth of the people. From the minute that you meet Brian in the parking lot, everyone is so warm and attentive and they go out of their way to make you feel welcome. And now that we have Elise, Child Care is tremendously important to us. I couldn’t wait to get back to working out after I had her, and the convenience of just bringing her with me to the Club makes all the difference. Lillibeth is a gem with Elise, she is so kind and attentive. The programming for kids is great, too. ACC: Is there anything about your membership at the ACC that are surprising? Andy: It’s probably not surprising, but just the relationships that we have with staff and members at the Club. For instance, Marilyn Vutech, a good friend, is an ACC member, and she is acting as our realtor on the purchase of our new home. We are moving to Upper Arlington, and when we were comparing neighborhoods, the accessibility of the ACC was a consideration, because we didn’t want to give up our membership here. Courtney: I agree, I think that our friendships from the Club are the most important thing that has developed over time. I love Lisa and Ralph Antolino (who doesn’t?) and Carla Sokol has encouraged me to get involved in many different activities. Andy convinced me to start using the services of a personal trainer (I was a do-it-yourselfer before) and now I love ACC Trainer Brent Johnson, too. His personality makes all the difference in the world during my workouts! ACC: Big plans for further exploring the Club? Courtney: Maybe getting more involved with Committee work now that Elise is older, and trying to help with the guidance of the Club. Andy: I’ll probably just use more hair tonic. “Lillibeth is a gem. She is so kind with Elise and she gives us great feedback on her stay in Child Care.” – Courtney Neckers JULY/AUGUST 2013 | ACCent Magazine | 11 LifE BringS ChangES From time to time, life brings changes that affect our financial picture: new jobs, promotions, retirement, births, deaths, marriage or divorce, etc. Such life changes make it necessary for us to periodically review our financial plans to determine if they are still working toward our current and future goals.
