Economic and Industry Sector Codes
What are Economic and Industry Sector Codes?
Research Insight provides you with Economic Sector Codes and Industry Sector Codes so that you can
benchmark performance of companies against broad economic and industry sectors. You can evaluate any
company’s stock performance against its appropriate sector even if that company is not in any of the S&P
indexes.
Economic Sector Codes categorize companies in the active COMPUSTAT (Global) databases ($G and $F)
into one of nine broad economic groups.
Industry Sector Codes further refine each classification into a more specific industry group.
•
Both Economic and Industry Sector Codes are 4-digit items representing current classifications
only (there is no history).
•
Standard & Poor’s provides data for these items in the SECTOR.CSV file on the Cored Database.
Use the Task Scheduler to schedule an import of sector data.
•
It should be noted that Economic and Industry Sector Codes are not parallel to SIC Codes.
