Poisonwood Bible Character Notes Character chosen: by Monday 10/21 Notes submitted: Thursday 11/6 (50 points) In-class Character Essay: Wednesday 11/13 (100 points) 1) For this assignment you are to present 4 – 6 pages of typed notes (double-spaced) focused on one of the Price sisters. These notes can consist of direct quotations by the character, observations made by other characters, references to specific events, your own personal insights, or relevant notes taken from outside sources like a concordance or encyclopedia. 2) These notes should be grouped by topic and probably need to move chronologically within a section if possible. They do not need to be written in complete sentences and can be bulleted lists. When copying a quote from the text, be sure to write the page number or numbers correctly. Uses ellipses (…) when omitting words from the middle of quotations. So that I can understand your page of notes, you should avoid over-using ellipses, however. 3) Here are some topics you may want to touch on: info on her given name/African name; major incidents which are crucial to her story; what she carried in or out of Africa; what she learned from Africa/how she changed; her views on religion and how they did or did not change; biblical allusions which pertain to her; comments from other characters about her. GRADING CRITERIA 1) Completeness: Have you combed through the text in a thorough manner? 2) Focus: Have you grouped the notes in a way that allows you to see patterns or form insights from the novel? 3) Originality and insight: Do you present your information with flair, insight, or creativity? 4) Literal accuracy: Have you demonstrated comprehension of the entire novel? 5) Mechanics: Is spelling, punctuation, sentence structure and grammar correct? GRADING Superb, above and beyond: 45- 50 points (A) Good, a solid effort: 40 – 45 points (B) Satisfactory, meets the criteria: 35 – 40 points (C) Unsatisfactory, does not meet criteria: 30-35 points (D) WHILE YOU ARE READING, HAVE POST-IT FLAGS HANDY TO MARK PASSAGES. YOU WILL PROBABLY END UP WITH MORE QUOTES MARKED THAN YOU WILL NEED FOR YOUR ASSIGNMENT. BUT AT LEAST YOU WILL NOT HAVE TO GO BACK AND REREAD WHOLE CHAPTERS TO FIND WHAT YOU WANT.
