Super Size Me!!! Dear Parents and Students, We have been working on a number of things in health class in the past few weeks in preparation for a final culminating task. Please see the information below in order to assist your child with their time and the task. You might wish to talk to your child about the documentary “Super Size Me” which they are viewing for this assignment. Curriculum Connections HPE: C2. When viewing the video students will be looking for examples of poor food choices in relation to specific criteria (portion/serving size, nutrient content, energy value, ingredients, preparation method and other factors) and diseases or conditions that are directly related to poor eating habits. While watching the video students are required to complete a graphic organizer to help keep track and record key ideas, facts or thoughts that they gain from watching the documentary. This information can also be included in the final culminating activity. Due Date: April 2 – Watch video & complete graphic organizer For a link to an un-‐edited documentary for viewing at home, please visit http://www.documentarywire.com/super-‐size-‐me Part 2: Culminating Activity *****Begin at home***** Now that you have watched the documentary "Super Size Me", it is now your turn to create an opinion piece urging a local favorite restaurant to highlight healthy food choices. Choose a restaurant that is considered "fast food" in order to draw easier connections to our learning. Your final product will be one of the following: • A letter to the local restaurant • A song • A Public Service Announcement (could be a rant, ex. Rick Mercer) • Your goal is to persuade the restaurant to provide healthy meal options on their menu. • Include 4-‐5 facts as support from the documentary in your final product (hint: use your organizer ideas to persuade) • Touch on at least 2 out of the 4 'big ideas' -‐ Canada's Food Guide, Food Preparation, Portion Size or Nutritional Quality (if you choose to include more than 3 big ideas, then depending on the quality of your answers, you may receive higher than a level 3). Remember to elaborate exactly what you mean. • Make connections to other topics and lessons in science (e.g., cells or systems), health (think Nutrients and connections to the body) or overall health and well being (consider other long term health issues) and support your connections with evidence while promoting alternative choices on the menu. Due Date: Rough draft April 10th (Class 81F & 82F), April 11th (Classes 81 & 82) Final Copy -‐ April 16th (Classes 81 & 82) April 17th (Classes 81F & 82F) Any questions can be directed personally to munros@hdsb.ca or rebanek@hdsb.ca Thank you for your support!
