Leader Feature: Dr. Heather Hackman Equity and Social Justice Consultant and Educator Challenges us all to Open Ourselves to Ideas, One Another “When we talk about social justice issues, people worry that it’s all going to be about guilt and shame and blame. There’s no time for all that. It’s not about guilt and shame and blame, it’s about waking up, catching up and showing up. “We can then show up with dignity and grace. We can’t keep leaving the room when conversations about race or class or gender oppression or any other form of oppression happen.” Learn more about Dr. Hackman at HackmanConsultingGroup.org “We need to wake up to the inequities in our society and catch up by educating ourselves more deeply about social justice issues (particularly the ones where we are in the dominant group). That is what social justice education offers - a gentle but persistent call to ‘wake up.’ Only then can we learn what we need to learn in order to bring about social justice in our society. “Real change is about waking up, catching up and showing up.” - Dr. Heather Hackman T R I -ANNUAL NE WS L E T T E R O F CO L L E GE P OSS I BL E VOLUME VII • SPRING 2015 • OPEN A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITY From Recruit to Alumnae academic support through ACT/ SAT test preparation Image: (c) 2011, Eric Pancer.
