Drama Vocabulary Words
Stage Directions - these are written in italics and enclosed in parentheses; they guide actors and actresses, describe emotions and facial expressions, and help you “see” what’s going on in the play
Dialogue - words spoken by characters in a literary work; plays are written to be performed and seen so almost all of what you learn is through the dialogue
Act - is a group of two or more scenes that form a major division of a play
Scene - is one part of the action, usually happening in a particular time and place
Monologue - is a speech by one character who is alone on stage
Drama - tells a story and includes elements such as characters, setting, plot, and theme; they are written to be performed
Playwright - this is the author of the play
Script - the form in which the play is written
Theme - the topic or main idea of the text
Tone - how the playwright feels about the subject
Props - moveable items that the actors use to make their actions seem realistic
Plot - the series of events that connects the beginning of the story to the end
Set - construction on stage that suggests the time and place of action
