Improved diagnostics are guiding patients toward more effective, tailored therapies with fewer side effects. Chemotherapy infusions are moving toward oral, prescription-based alternatives. Yet despite all this good news, due to earlier detection, longer survivorship and an aging population, the number of cancer patients continues to rise. For the third consecutive year, the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara cared for a record number of unique patients — 11,367 in 2014. Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara Board of Trustees Sansum Clinic Board of Trustees Hugh M. Boss, Chairman James H. Jackson, Vice Chair Gene I. Miller, Treasurer Arthur J. Merovick, Secretary Steve McHugh, Chairman Emeritus Vicki Hazard, Chair Edwin Rosenblatt, Vice Chair Janet A. Garufis, Vice Chair As more patients entrust their care to the staff and physicians at the Cancer Center, the mission of the Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara becomes more critical than ever. Through the extraordinary generosity of our supporters, the Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara and the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara with Sansum Clinic continue to focus on providing exceptional cancer care to everyone in Santa Barbara County regardless of their ability to pay. Thanks to this effective partnership, numerous advances in local cancer care were made throughout the Cancer Center in 2014. New key leadership was hired in the Radiation Oncology Department including a new Director and Chief Radiation Therapist. Upgrades were made to the oncology treatment planning system and linear accelerators. The Medical Oncology department expanded services in Solvang, added a new physician to their team, and in partnership with Sansum Clinic’s Radiology department, launched a new low-dose lung cancer screening program. Patients seen by Nuclear Medicine enjoyed superior diagnostic imaging thanks to a new Philips BrightView diagnostic camera acquired through the generosity of local donors, and a new radioactive treatment called Xofigo® for certain prostate cancers was instituted. The Cancer Center is the only facility offering this treatment between San Francisco and Los Angeles and is among the top 3 facilities in the nation. Our Research Department was able to quickly open eight new oncology trials in 2014 and experienced a 51% increase in new patients enrolled in clinical trials. Over $2 Million in free and subsidized care was delivered to 1,953 less fortunate patients in 2014. While the total support needed by our patients declined thanks to increased insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act, the number of patients requiring financial assistance grew significantly: a 30% increase in the number of patients who received financial aid, a 48% increase in those who received partially or fully-discounted medical bills and a 73% increase in those who needed assistance with insurance co-pays. While our medical departments made significant advances this year, major progress was made more broadly toward realizing a vision launched by Cancer Center trustees back in 1999: the creation of a new 54,780 square foot regional cancer center to integrate outpatient cancer care under one roof. Though much work remains, through the continued dedication of staff, volunteers and support from our community, we hope to make this new cancer center a reality. We greatly appreciate our trustees, donors, volunteers, staff and patients. Thank you for everything you do to ensure the finest quality cancer care exists in our community, and for the critical role you will play in bringing a new cutting-edge cancer center to our community in the future. Detailed plans have been submitted to the City of Santa Barbara and the adjacent parking garage has been approved. Once sufficient funds have been raised, construction can begin within a year. Building on its history of excellent care, the new Cancer Center will provide a space where providers collaborate and coordinate the best care plan for each individual patient. Cancer care requires the involvement of a team which includes medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, primary care physicians, nutritionists, clinical research coordinators, nurses, social service workers and wellness practitioners. Providing close proximity for all members of the care team to work together creates better coordinated care and treatment plans while reducing the burden on patients and their family members who join them for medical appointments. To blend with the craftsman style cottages that surround Oak Park, architects Boulder Associates and Cearnal Andrulaitis have worked together combining sand stone, shingle-siding and large windows to create a handsome, craftsman-styled building, set amongst large resident live oaks and Torrey Pines. An adjacent Healing Garden (roughly ½ acre) will create a serene green belt along Mission Creek and West Pueblo Street. “There is an urgent need to bring all the services offered at the Cancer Center under one roof. This collaborative setting will result in better outcomes and greatly improved patient experience,” explains Kurt Ransohoff, MD, CEO and Chief Medical Officer of Sansum Clinic. The three story, 54,780 sq. ft. building will reside on a 23,432 sq. ft., footprint on the Cancer Center’s 3.38 acre Mission Creek campus. It will be accompanied by an adjacent parking garage, and plans include an auditorium for medical staff education and community events. The new center will include two state-of-the-art radiation treatment vaults, dedicated space for clinical research, social services, wellness and support programs, and superb views from the chemotherapy suites located on the 3rd floor. Physicians and patients alike will benefit tremendously from the collaboration of multiple medical departments and specialists under one roof, providing a rich environment to propel cancer care to the next level — while allowing patients to concentrate on their health, healing, and the reduction of stress. The Radiation Oncology department offers a wide range of capabilities including standard external beam radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery and brachytherapy. Patients receive compassionate care delivered by our physician-led teams with highly skilled nurses, technologists and medical assistants. Radiation Oncology has always depended on technology to treat cancer patients, and in 2014, this department made significant investments in process, technology and people, including an upgrade to Monaco 5 treatment planning software — which ensures each dose delivered precisely matches the prescribed dose, regardless of variations in surrounding tissue density. Far left: Susie is seated at a sidewalk cafe in downtown Santa Barbara. Susie Gilligan’s Story Susie Gilligan received a number of calls on her 46th birthday, but one in particular was unexpected — one from her doctor. Her MRI results were in and the symptoms she’d been worried about had their origin in cancer: three tumors on her spine had been detected. She’d need to come in immediately. “It came out of left field,” explained Susie, who felt perfectly healthy at the time of her diagnosis in January of 2014. “I was walking four miles a day and eating well. I’d just gone in to see my doctor because I had a few nagging issues. I never thought he’d tell me I had cancer.” The MRI scans revealed malignant growths in her spinal cord that were pressing on nerves that carry messages to and from the brain. This had been disrupting Susie’s muscle control and leading to a loss of movement and numbness on the right side of her body. Her particular form of cancer is rare, the doctors told her, and it is also hard to treat. Because the cells are embedded in such a sensitive area, surgeons rarely operate. Radiation is the most common therapy, but even that doesn’t always help. After all the tests and consultations, Susie was given six to twelve months to live. But the wheelchair that doctors thought she’d never live without is now gathering dust in a corner in her living room; the walker that superseded it still gets use but not as much as it did. As Susie’s strength returns, she’s been able to walk along the beach again, holding hands with her husband Shaun. Susie’s team of doctors, nurses and physical therapists from the Cancer Center and Sansum Clinic have also been by her side. “I’ve met incredible people along this journey,” Susie reflects. “They’ve all been wonderful. Medical Oncologist/Hematologist Dr. Thomas Woliver has been personable and easy to talk to, and Radiation Oncologist Lindsay Blount, MD who oversaw my radiation treatment made me feel comfortable and safe. Patient Navigator Cindy Gasser scheduled my appointments and accompanied me and deciphered all the complex information coming our way. Sherry Massey, a Support Services case worker, assisted me with complicated paperwork and finances. And the Well-Fit™ program, which provides physical training at the Santa Barbara Athletic Club for cancer patients twice a week, helped my body heal while providing a sense of community and camaraderie. It’s where I met another woman who has lived with the same condition I have for over a decade — she’s become an inspiration.” “I wouldn’t be around without these people,” Susie states unequivocally, noting that her health has improved because of the support she’s received. “I’ve been amazingly lucky.” L C A N C E R C E N T E R O F S A N TA B A R B A R A W I T H S A N S U M C L I N I C [7] A total of 6,026 unique cancer patients were treated, (+5.3%)* resulting in 36,946 Medical Oncology & Hematology — 2014 Patients Statistics visits to all Medical Oncology & Hematology sites (+4.1%)* TOP 10 DIAGNOSES Greg Thomas % 31.6 BREAST 20.9% OTHER % 10.3 LYMPHOMA 9.0% PROSTATE % 7.3 LEUKEMIA 5.6% LUNG % 3.9 GYNECOLOGICAL 3.1% COLON % 3.0 MULTIPLE MYELOMA 2.8% HEAD & NECK % 2.8 KIDNEY/ BLADDER/URINARY * Percentage increase of patients treated as compared to 2013 [8] C A N C E R F O U N DAT I O N O F S A N TA B A R B A R A Medical Oncologists must understand the outward symptoms of a patient and the cellular and molecular level of each individual’s cancer. Far left: Greg is standing by the El Presidio de Santa Barbara garden gate, which is part of the Presidio State Historic Park. Greg Thomas’ Story Married with three young children, Greg Thomas led an active and engaged life in Santa Barbara, exploring nature with his family, frequenting local farmers markets and investing deeply in his local church community. Greg strived toward a healthy and largely organic lifestyle in large ways and small — he was the picture of health and had no symptoms. Looking back, he’s still not entirely clear when the small bump appeared near his left ear. He was by no means concerned, and it wasn’t until he casually brought it up with his wife Corey that they decided to look into it. Suddenly, this seemingly benign cyst morphed into a frightening diagnosis: stage four NonHodgkin’s lymphoma. Days after learning this news, Greg and Corey met with Cancer Center Medical Oncologist Dr. Fred Kass. From their physician and the support staff — even the jigsaw puzzle placed in the waiting room — Greg and Corey feel deeply grateful for the conscientious care they received. “You’re just sitting there shell shocked,” recalls Corey thinking back on those early weeks of Greg’s diagnosis and treatment. “Those little touches made a huge difference. Even the banner that hung in Dr. Kass’s office — “Every journey has its blessing”— resounded deeply and expanded my vision for our present circumstances. As a spouse it was really important what took place there.” Once Greg’s preliminary tests were in, Dr. Kass referred Greg to his partner, Medical Oncologist Dr. Dan Greenwald, whose clinical interest and research focuses on lymphoma. Due to the complexity and significance of his diagnosis, Greg felt compelled — albeit a bit hesitant out of concern of offending his existing medical team — to obtain a second opinion at Stanford. When he proposed the idea to Dr. Greenwald, he was totally supportive and in fact, facilitated the appointment at Stanford. Dr. Greenwald received his medical residence, internship and fellowship training at Stanford University School of Medicine and knew it well. “I was just so grateful that Dr. Greenwald and his team were eager to help make connections to get someone else to look at my case.” Prior to heading up to Stanford, Greg met with Dr. Kass to discuss the ins and outs of what would take place at that consultation — insights that left Greg both informed and empowered as he moved forward with getting a second opinion. The second opinion helped clarify the plan put forth by Drs. Kass and Greenwald who had been deciding between two treatment alternatives: R-CHOP (the more standard lymphoma treatment) and dose adjusted R-EPOCH. They ultimately moved forward with the latter and today Greg is cancer free. Through it all, the Thomases felt that Drs. Kass and Greenwald were their biggest advocates. “Time and time again they were committed to ensuring we received the best care and outcome, and that we were able to get through this in the most comfortable way possible. In January 2014, the Nuclear Medicine department began to see the benefits of superior imaging supplied by a new Philips BrightView SPECT/CT diagnostic camera obtained through the generosity of donors and the Cancer Foundation. Also in 2014, Nuclear Medicine began using a new drug that more accurately identifies the sentinel lymph node in breast cancer and melanoma patients and illuminates which lymph nodes are cancerous. A new radioactive treatment was also initiated in 2014 called Xofigo,® an injected treatment for patients whose prostate cancer is inoperable. The Cancer Center is the only facility providing this treatment between San Francisco and Los Angeles and we are among the top three facilities in the nation providing this care, based on volume. Yvonne Coffey’s Story “Right around my 40th birthday I found a lump in my breast that grew bigger every day,” says Yvonne, a dynamic mother, wife and employee of a small Santa Barbara company. “When I was diagnosed in June 2013, I was a mess. Totally terrified. But right away the Cancer Center made me feel less scared.” Yvonne was diagnosed with HER2-positive (human epidermal growth factor receptor 2) metastatic breast cancer. A team of doctors at the Cancer Center responded immediately, and throughout Yvonne’s treatment — which included chemotherapy, surgery and radiation — she had regular PET scans (positron emission tomography) to monitor her progress. The scans are a form of nuclear medicine imaging that illuminate cancer cells in the body and present them in three-dimensional images. The images reveal the size, shape and location of unhealthy growths and can help detect the way cancer spreads. PET scans are noninvasive and typically painless procedures. At the Cancer Center, highly trained technicians oversee specialized equipment and tests, and specially trained physicians read and interpret the images. Yvonne was nervous before getting her first scan, but it went seamlessly. Doctors put her on a special diet for 24 hours, injected her with a radioactive fluid, had her sit still for about an hour, and then slid her into the large tunnel-shaped scanner. What could have been a frightening experience became relaxing, says Yvonne. “A technician covered me in heated blankets, tucked a pillow under my knees, and told me exactly what was happening,” she says. Afterward, her doctors were quick to send her the results and explain them, laying out a plan going forward. “The Cancer Center offers both technology and heart,” she says. “That’s a rare combination.” Yvonne enjoyed her fair share of joy and laughs, too. The first time her scans detected no sign of cancer, her nurse grabbed her by the hands and celebrated the great news right along with her. “I knew I’d made a friend for life!” She exclaims. Yvonne has maintained a positive outlook throughout the healing process, and she believes that things went as well as they possibly could have. “I am so incredibly grateful for the Cancer Center,” she says. “The doctors, nurses and staff saved my life, and they’ve made it even better.” She’s most grateful for the relationships she has with the Cancer Center staff. “When I’m here, I’m among friends,” she says. “I’m not Patient X, I’m Yvonne — not just someone going through this but a whole person they wanted to get to know.” She’s also thankful for her husband Gabe, who has supported her every step of the way. “He’s been absolutely amazing,” she says. “I’m not scared anymore,” she adds. “I’m looking forward to my future. They take monthly trips to the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara — driving more than three hours each way — so that John can participate in a clinical research trial for patients with leukemia. A retired teacher, John sums up his health strategy as “Get informed, ask questions and take action.” For the past eight years, this proactive approach has been effective for the tall, athletic grandfather who works out in the gym daily and swims three times a week. In 2006, after months of feeling run down, John was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL), a blood disorder caused by malignant white blood cells. Aggressive CLL like John’s typically returns after periods of remission, and can interfere with the normal production of red blood cells or platelets in the bone marrow. A researcher by nature, John went online and found out everything he could about leukemia and decided to seek out experts in CLL who were conducting genetic typing and therapeutic trials, which led him to a clinical trial that put John’s leukemia in remission for two years. While the medical press suggests a cure for CLL looks plausible in the not-too-distant future, John is intent on remaining as healthy as possible and spending time with his grandchildren. “He’s the baby whisperer in our family,” said Joan. “Being alive for the grandbabies on the way,” has been, for John, a key motivator for taking part in clinical trials. Pursuing emerging drug therapies allows John to manage his leukemia more like a chronic condition, rather than thinking of it as a terminal illness. After two successful trial and remission cycles over a period of several years, the condition returned once again a year ago. “I was feeling exhausted, and a lymph node in my neck was swollen to the size of a blueberry,” said John. In the time that had passed since John’s previous treatment, researchers made progress in identifying combinations of drugs targeting specific genes that cause CLL. John met with Dr. Dan Greenwald, Medical Oncologist at the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara. “The Cancer Center has a superb reputation for patient care and research. It’s world-class as far as I’m concerned,” said John. Heidi Heitkamp, Manager of Clinical Research, concurs: “Our clinical trials are part of sponsored studies taking place on a global scale. We meet very strict criteria that put us in an exclusive network of sites that draw patients from other areas.” After his first two infusions of the targeted compounds, John felt better almost immediately. “The swelling in my neck and the pain in my spleen disappeared entirely within 48 hours,” said John. Closely monitored by Dr. Greenwald, John underwent the entire six-month course of treatment with minimal side effects. “When he was first diagnosed, two of our children were expecting babies. John was afraid he wouldn’t live to see them,” said Joan. For the Hulihan’s, using grandchildren as a yardstick for cancer survival is apt. This includes counseling, case management, support groups, assistance with home care and long-term care, insurance, transportation, finances and advocacy. Our social workers help qualify cancer patients for assistance from private foundations, obtain free medications from pharmaceutical manufacturers, identify co-pay assistance programs and other offerings. A tonsillectomy would be necessary to remove it. By February 2014 Donny had undergone surgery and finished seven weeks of intensive radiation therapy. Unfortunately, the combined treatment had a significant impact on his ability to taste — which was particularly devastating for a man who had spent the past eleven years in the kitchen of one of Santa Ynez’s fine golf course restaurants. He knew all too well that taste buds are an essential tool of the culinary trade, and without them he might lose his ability to discern the balance of subtle flavors in the dishes he’d been creating. But he’s not complaining. “I feel blessed to have had the medical team I did,” says Donny. “Medical Oncologist Dr. Mukul Gupta, Radiation Oncologist Dr. Warren Suh and ENT Surgeon Dr. Andrew Mester worked so well together.” “Yet the person who really carried me through it all was my Support Services caseworker, Sherry Massey,” he adds. “Without Sherry, I don’t know where I’d be.” She provided Donny with the financial and logistical support he needed as he went through the many procedures and therapies that eventually eliminated his cancer and healed his mouth and throat. Sherry not only helped Donny get disability benefits and find health insurance, she also arranged for a grant that provided him with over $6,000 for copayments, insurance premiums and dental care (dental reconstruction is common after radiation treatment to the head and neck). “I wouldn’t have had a clue how to do all that on my own,” says Donny. “Sherry was an immense help, and I don’t know what I would’ve done without her. We talked over the phone regularly and met in person several times a week throughout all this, and I felt like she was always by my side. The comfort and peace of mind she provided during my entire treatment was immeasurable.” Donny also credits his Labrador’s companionship for elevating his spirits and helping to get him through the tough treatments. “No matter what state I’m in, Jagger always makes me feel better,” says Donny. “He’s a hundred pounds of pure joy.” Together they go on beach walks and hikes in the mountains, which are longer now that Donny is regaining his stamina. With his returning strength, Donny’s taste buds are recovering too; he’s enjoying a wider variety of foods and savoring each bite. He’s even starting to build a new business — creating a line of sauces and dry rubs that burst with flavor to share with happy customers. To him, there’s nothing sweeter. I grew up in Indianapolis.” After a stint in the Navy, he came to California, went through UCSB on the G.I. Bill and spent almost 40 years at Hughes Aircraft Santa Barbara Research Center engineering fire suppression equipment. Along the way, he and his wife Jill also raised nine children. Yes, nine. “My youngest is 24,” Sam says with a tinge of pride. “He graduated from Chapman University. He’s got two degrees.” Three of his daughters, he adds, graduated from USC. In an important way, Sam’s diagnosis of pancreatic cancer was a blessing. “I was fortunate,” he explains. “I became jaundiced. So I went in to find out what was going on. My tumor was on the head of the pancreas and was pressing on the bile duct. That was causing the jaundice. My surgeon explained to me that twothirds of those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer aren’t candidates for surgery. Their diagnoses came too late. You don’t find out soon enough. My jaundice led me to an early diagnosis.” “I was okay with the diagnosis,” he says. “I’m 70-odd years old. I’ve had nine kids and a good life. Things are pretty well set up. I’ve been fortunate in retirement. So I wasn’t really worried about a lot of these things. I was comfortable with the situation. It is what it is. The tough part was telling my kids. The next day, three of my daughters came up here and spent the night on the Internet researching my cancer. I have strong daughters. I listened to my kids, and I’m glad I did.” After surgery he was referred to Medical Oncologist Dr. Mukul Gupta at the Cancer Center, and it is here that he discovered the wealth of Wellness Programs available. “The Cancer Center is phenomenal,” Sam declares. “They offer three different yoga classes and I’ve been to all of them. I signed up for their Well-fit™ Program with the Santa Barbara Athletic Club. I did Tai Chi. They offer acupuncture so I did that. Everything they offered I tried, and I love them all. In fact there’s so much that I had to back off a bit because I still need to pay bills and live life. The downside to all this cancer business is that I don’t have the same strength I had before. I take it day by day.” That didn’t stop Sam from taking the initiative on a special project to benefit the Cancer Center: building a drip irrigation system for the Center’s vegetable garden and talking several local businesses into donating materials to install it. “This garden is more than just a place to raise organic vegetables for patients,” he says. “Gardening can be therapeutic, and watching seeds blossom into rich, healthful food is a rejuvenating experience.“ “And through it all, two of my daughters got married. No matter how this thing turns out, being able to attend their weddings will be something I hold dear for the rest of my days.” L C A N C E R C E N T E R O F S A N TA B A R B A R A W I T H S A N S U M C L I N I C [17] In 2014 1,072 unique patients were assisted by our Patient Patient Navigation Navigators (+64%)* NAVIGATION PROGRAM 876 BREAST CANCER Kim Schizas & Mac PATIENTS (+64%)* 100 HEAD/NECK & MULTI MODALITY PATIENTS 58 GYNECOLOGICAL PATIENTS (NEW IN 2014) 38 OTHER * Percentage increase compared to 2013. Meeting Kim for the first time, no one would guess she was on the tail end of a year of chemotherapy, surgery, radiation therapy and medication — all treatments to eliminate a tumor found in her chest one year ago. Through it all she has done her best to maintain her strength despite not being able to run the long distances she used to, and the Cancer Center team has walked with her through this new kind of marathon. Kim’s journey began last March when her doctor informed her that an abnormal growth detected on the right side of her chest was cancerous. She was diagnosed with breast cancer, more specifically human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2-positive). At her initial visit, Kim and her partner Mark met with Medical Oncologist Dr. Fred Kass who discussed an action plan with them and later oversaw Kim’s treatment program. Kim was also assigned a Patient Navigator, Sam Howland. Navigators are provided free of charge to help patients deal with the complexities of their treatments. “Sam felt like family in this brand new world I’d entered,” says Kim. “She was just amazing. She was my advocate, and I always felt she had my back.” Navigators at the Cancer Center serve as liaisons between patients and health care providers. They help arrange care with various specialists, relay information, schedule and attend appointments, explain complicated material and are always available to answer questions. “Navigators make the whole process feel really personal,” says Kim, who saw and communicated with Sam regularly. Kim particularly appreciated the way Sam and her doctors helped her understand what she was going through. Sensing her desire for more knowledge, they provided her with the latest research on her specific condition and effective ways to heal it. They weighed various treatment options with her, let her know what she might expect from each one and assisted her in making decisions. “They were great allies,” says Kim. Now, one year after her initial diagnosis, Kim finds herself nearing the end of a long, powerful and effective treatment. Body scans and pathology reports can find no trace of cancer in her body, and she is on the road to recovery. She finds herself deeply moved by the memories of her visits to the Cancer Center. “It’s strange — even though I’ve been through so much this past year,” says Kim, “My experiences there were always so positive and uplifting in ways I can’t really explain.” Kim attributes this to the genuine warmth of the Cancer Center staff and the interest they took in her. “Everyone at the Cancer Center is glad to see you and looks out for you,” she says. “When I was first diagnosed, I was plunged into a completely new world, but the staff made that world less scary.” At one point during the whole process, a longtime friend of Kim’s invited her to join the Cancer Foundation Board of Trustees. “I was honored to be asked,” she says, “as I wanted to find a way to stay connected to the Center and to give back.” She officially joined the board in December, and looks forward to being a part of an institution that’s dedicated to the quality of care she experienced firsthand. In the weeks that followed, Michelle’s physicians confirmed she had ductal carcinoma in situ or DCIS, the most common type of noninvasive breast cancer. Evelynn’s breast cancer had been DCIS too, and with Michelle’s diagnosis, she was keenly aware there could be broader implications for her family — not only for Michelle but for Michelle’s younger sister Stephanie and her grandchildren. Much of Evelynn’s professional and volunteer life had been centered on advocacy, and supporting her daughter through her disease would be no exception. She knew what she needed to do. It was within this paradigm that Evelynn and Michelle found deep comfort in the counsel and expertise of the Cancer Center’s Genetic Counselor Danielle Sharaga, MS, LCGC. Both women received BRCA testing for Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry and both came back negative. Michelle underwent additional tests and Danielle was also able to provide guidance and suggestions for Evelynn’s younger daughter Stephanie as well. “I was so concerned about my daughters, and my grandchildren,” admits Evelynn. “Danielle made us feel like we were one of a few on her list of appointments. There was never any rush — always a proactive disposition — and thorough testing.” Ultimately the outcome of the genetic testing proved hopeful for all. “Danielle read the results while we were there, and everything was in our favor,” recalls Evelynn, and with that, the family was able to exhale. Michelle underwent a biopsy and lumpectomy, and her surgery was followed by four months of radiation. Along with a solid team of physicians, Evelynn was also impressed by the intuitive nature of the Cancer Center’s nursing staff who cared for Michelle throughout her treatment. They would joke with her when her spirits were high, and provided comfort and care on her tougher days. “The whole experience was so much more comfortable because of these wonderful people.” Through their journey, Evelynn and Michelle forged an even deeper connection having each survived DCIS. For both women DCIS was unexpected and jarring. Yet after walking alongside Michelle and the treatment she received, Evelynn has a fresh perspective. “I think the biggest thing I learned was that cancer isn’t as scary as I had made it out to be in my mind,” says Evelynn. “Things keep progressing and with that there’s great hope.” This hope was enriched by the consistent care and support offered up by the staff and practitioners at the Cancer Center. “I can’t think of one person who wasn’t wonderful,” recalls Evelynn, and her daughter Michelle couldn’t agree more. Seven days passed before she returned home again. She was shuttled from urgent care directly to the emergency room after doctors found large tumors in her ovaries. She was diagnosed with stage 3B ovarian cancer (3B means the cancer has extended to other pelvic organs), had surgery, was cared for, and sent home knowing that the next few months of her life were going to look much different than the months before her diagnosis. During her week in the hospital, Tasneem also found herself in the care of Cancer Center staff who graciously welcomed her during this tumultuous time. “Without the Cancer Center, I don’t know where I’d be,” she says. She developed relationships with the Center’s doctors, nurses and patient navigators, all of whom oversaw her care during the ensuing months. She also began to take advantage of the many free educational services the Center offers, including facilitated support groups, exercise classes and the resource library. As the mother of a ten-year-old girl, Tasneem quickly discovered that her daughter Jamila could benefit from these resources too. They went together to the library and met with the Oncology Librarian and Patient Navigator, Sam Howland, MS, to select books well suited for each of them. “Sam was always a friendly face,” says Tasneem, “and she welcomed Jamila in such a warm way. The materials she chose for her helped her understand what I was going through.” Tasneem’s chemotherapy continued through the summer which involved intravenous injections as well as injections directly into her abdomen. She and her daughter continued to use the Cancer Center’s resources during that time, and also attended support groups offered at the Center. Jamila attended one designed specifically for children of cancer patients, and it was there that she learned to identify her feelings and express them in pictures and words. Tasneem attended a support group, one especially for gynecological cancer patients and found solace in talking with others facing similar conditions. The conversations Tasneem and Jamila had during and after their support groups, as well as the educational material they checked out from the library, allowed their family to learn about Tasneem’s diagnosis and have a healthy and open dialogue about her experience. Tasneem finished the last of her four chemotherapy cycles in October. She has gained strength and found comfort in Gentle Yoga classes taught at the Center where supporting postures and relaxing stretches have helped her ease her way into remission. Tasneem even checked out a copy of a yoga DVD from the Resource Library to help guide her yoga practice at home. Tasneem is grateful for the attention and resources she and her daughter received at the Center, and she looks forward to resuming work and family duties this spring, now that her cancer is in remission. “The Cancer Center made me feel so cared for,” says Tasneem, “and it’s not just me who feels this way. At the request of their daughters, the couple left behind their native Los Angeles and the business they built there for Santa Barbara in 1991. “Outside of a few short vacations, we didn’t know anything about Santa Barbara,” explains Seymour Lehrer. “We didn’t know anyone, didn’t know any of the institutions… it was a blind move. Turned out to be the best thing we ever did. And funny thing… our daughters ended up following us here.” “I was treated for cancer 30 years ago, and I’m still here to tell the tale,” confides Shirley Lehrer. “Cancer research is a very important thing to me. It would be very helpful to find a cure for it someday, and I believe through research we will. It’s one of the reasons we support it.” Originally a tool and die maker, Seymour went on to found a metal goods manufacturing company with his wife. Today his workshop, chock full of scrap metal, arc welders and works-of-art in process, is testament that metalwork remains deep in Mr. Lehrer’s blood. Over decades of hard work, their metal business blossomed and the Lehrer’s diversified by investing in industrial buildings — something they knew intimately as business owners who used them. “Santa Barbara is our home now. We’ve been here 24 years, and our children are here,” continues Seymour Lehrer. “Through our family’s foundation, we enjoy supporting the arts and many local institutions. If you live in Santa Barbara, not to support our local institutions is crazy. For years we supported a number of medical institutions in the Los Angeles area. Big ones. We decided to take those annual gifts and make a bigger difference here at the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara. And when we updated our estate plans in 2014, we included the Cancer Foundation.” “ What we have here is precious. People come from all over — from Visalia, the Santa Ynez Valley and beyond. Supporting our local institutions, upon which we depend, just makes good sense.” [28] C A N C E R F O U N DAT I O N O F S A N TA B A R B A R A Named Endowments Funds Arthur J. I never experienced waiting times and felt that everything was well organized. Most importantly, though, everybody I encountered, from the receptionists to the nurses to the Radiology Technicians, was unfailingly friendly, cheerful and helpful. I am grateful for the good and congenial care I received.” — KARL HUTTERER Marliu Lewis Thomas D. Lewis James Lindsay Joe Lopp Mike Lorimer Doreen F. Macker Julie Main Donald R. Manning Jan F. Cancer Center volunteers have provided Healing Touch to both patients and caregivers for almost eight years. Healing Touch is an evidenced-based, noninvasive treatment that helps restore and balance the innate energy within the human body that has been depleted due to stress, illness, grief or medical treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation, and is offered through our Oncology Wellness programs. Jean Mangus, Nina Zimmer and Patricia Brennan, RN have all been trained in the art of Healing Touch and during their years of volunteering have provided more than 1,200 treatments to 400 patients and caregivers. In addition to their skillful abilities, their warmth and compassion have enhanced the wellbeing of hundreds touched by cancer. “I find it a privilege to accompany these clients for a small part of their healing journey,” explains Healing Touch volunteer Nina Zimmer. “Their courage and strength inspire me in my own life. I hear so much gratitude from them about all the resources provided here and all the wonderful people who staff the Cancer Center.” In 2014, more than 20 regular volunteers like Jean, Nina and Patricia contributed more than 2,000 hours of service for the benefit of our patients by serving coffee, distributing parking permits, walking patients to appointments, and providing clerical and event support. We are grateful to each of them for sharing their time and talents with us. Patricia, Jean and Nina are standing in the courtyard of the Santa Barbara Historical Museum.
