APRIL 2015 NEWSLETTER
Club Construction Chronicle No. 13
March has been an exciting month at The Club!
Crews are attending to the foundation and
structure of the existing building and continue
to work on electrical and plumbing systems.
Meanwhile, the soil surrounding the Guest
House wing of The Club has been completely
replaced and recompacted. Pylon footings have
been installed as crews work on the foundation
of the new structure. The site is starting to
take shape and is beginning to resemble the
future Guest House structure.
From the President –
Not only the building but the personalities
are changing! Following the recent Board election, I
will be moving from Vice-president to President;
the new Vice President will be Paula Bruice of our
Chemistry Department; the Treasurer will be Lisa
Daniels of the EVC’s office; and the new Secretary
will be Whitney Morris of Conference Services. This
slate of officers nicely signals the Club’s welcome to
both faculty and staff as members.
Three former officers are just stepping
down and deserve special thanks. Suzanne Oliver
of GGSE was our Treasurer, bringing a sharp eye
and thoughtful questions to a crucial component of
the new relationship between the Club and Housing
and Residential Services. Linda Putnam has served
as our Secretary. On the Board, she drew on her
research on Communication to subtly improve the
tone and quality of our deliberations; and, on the
campus, her scholarly accomplishments were just
recognized with UCSB’s Faculty Research
Lectureship. And Bruce Tiffney, who served as
President and the face – and voice – of the Club for
the last six years, leaves a legacy that will shape
the Club into the future. Responding to the clear
evidence that the Faculty Club’s operation was
fiscally unsustainable, Bruce and the Board worked
with Willie Brown of Housing and Residential
Services to craft the Club’s new business plan, with
the architects to shape the conception into
blueprints, and with the builders to get underway
the complex project of renovating one of the
campus’s most treasured buildings. By mastering
financial and architectural arcana, and participating
cheerfully in sometimes-trying negotiations, Bruce
gave the Club’s membership a perceptive,
skeptical, and resourceful voice. Now that the
project is moving ahead, Dean Tiffney will go back
to his – much less challenging, we’re certain –
regular job running the College of Creative Studies.
