You are embarking on an exciting period of your life, and we are delighted that you have chosen to join the OSU community of scholars. As a graduate student, you are an integral part of OSU’s mission to advance knowledge, enrich lives, and stimulate economic development through instruction, research, outreach, and creative activities. Graduate students teach many of our undergraduate courses and conduct a large portion of our original research. As a graduate student, you will be exposed to cutting edge theories, practices, and research findings in your discipline. Many of the scholarly achievements at Oklahoma State University would not be possible if it were not for our strong graduate programs. Your experiences as a graduate student will hopefully be an exciting and fruitful one that will promote your growth as a scholar. You will learn theories and methodologies in the classroom and will engage some of the leading researchers and practitioners in your field. Of course, the hallmark of your graduate experience will be the research and creative activities that you initiate and conduct as a part of your degree. These activities may be conducted in the laboratory, in the library, in an agricultural research plot, at a computer, or on a stage, and they may result in a life-altering performance or refereed publication. Pursuing a graduate degree will be a challenging and rewarding experience. As a new OSU graduate student, you may have lots of questions. Therefore, the OSU Graduate College presents this Guide to you. It is intended to familiarize you with aspects of the OSU campus, the academic culture, and the Stillwater and Tulsa communities, as well as some of the resources available to you. We hope you find it helpful. If you have questions or concerns not addressed in this Guide, please do not hesitate to contact the Graduate College. To ensure the successful completion of a graduate degree, remember you are in charge of your degree. It is important to become familiar with the steps necessary to complete the degree requirements. Also, becoming involved in the OSU community is an important aspect of your professional development. There are many clubs, organizations and activities available to you. Of particular interest to graduate students is the Graduate and Professional Student Government Association (GPSGA), which serves as the voice of the graduate students at OSU. This organization is a powerful advocate for graduate student issues on campus, and its officers are well-known in the OSU community as important contributors to the establishment of campus graduate policies and practices. Please take the opportunity to be involved with GPSGA. Again, welcome to OSU. I look forward to interacting with you on campus and hearing about your experiences and accomplishments. I wish you the very best during this exciting and enriching time of your life. Sincerely, Sheryl A. Tucker Sheryl A. Tucker, Ph.D. Dean of the Graduate College So, You’ve Been aDmitteD. noW What? The comprehensive resources in OSU’s Library will provide you the help needed to write research papers and complete class projects. On the Stillwater campus, the Edmon Low Library is one of the most distinguished buildings on campus and has dominated the center of the campus landscape since 1953. On the Tulsa campus, the library is centrally located in Main Hall on the First Floor. Our libraries house more than seven million books, documents, and microforms. Through the library you can access more than 200 electronic bibliographic databases which link to millions of full-text, on-line articles. The following are examples of databases provided by the library: Web of Science, LexiNexis, ProQuest Direct, SciFinder Scholar, PsycInfo, Compendex, and Early English Books Online. You can find a complete list of databases at www.library.okstate. edu/database/index.cfm. The library also funds access to more than 60,000 online full text journals. A complete list of journals is available at www.library. okstate.edu/ftdb/index.htm. For material you need which the library doesn’t own, Interlibrary Loan Service will accept your online requests for books and articles. Most articles requested through Interlibrary Loan can be delivered electronically to your computer. As an OSU student, you have access to all online resources from computers located in the library or any computer on campus. If you are researching a paper while off campus, through library’s website you can access all on-line materials. Also, graduate students are entitled to a 120-day (4 months) checkout period for books. If you need a computer while studying in the Edmon Low Library, you can checkout one of 150 laptops, 30 ipads, or 20 MacBook Pro’s. The laptops have wireless access to the internet anywhere in the building with a generous five hour checkout period, they can also leave the building if you want to use them elsewhere. The Edmon Low Library is open most nights until 2:00 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. During pre-finals and finals weeks, it is open 24 hours. The OSU-Tulsa library is open during business and class hours on Monday through Thursday until 10:00 p.m. with shortened hours during the weekend. how do you balance school/ work/research/family/life time? I think it’s really important to keep a healthy balance between family, work, school, and social activities. For me, if one of those starts to dominate too much then I need to make an adjustment. If you’re organized and efficient, it’s not too challenging to balance a full-time job and the MBA program. things you wish you had done/ known sooner … OSU is a PGAU school, meaning that they offer noncredit golf classes to students that are taught by PGA professionals. Gas prices are among the lowest in the country and if you shop around, you can find really good deals on house rentals. 9 on anD off campuS houSing residential life There is no place like home and during your tenure as a student at Oklahoma State University you will need a place to stay. If you will be moving to Stillwater or to Tulsa, you will need to consider local housing options. In terms of housing around the Stillwater campus, there are many options available to you. As a graduate student, the choice is yours to live on campus or off. However, the Graduate College believes that when you live on campus, you are given the opportunity to become a member of an interesting and unique residential community. As a member of this community, you can be an active participant in making and carrying out decisions affecting you and the community. Also, living on campus provides quicker access to services beneficial to your success such as recreation facilities, classrooms, labs, and the Edmon Low Library. Plus, you don’t have to drive to campus and find a parking spot. While the Tulsa campus does not have residence halls, there are several housing opportunities located in close proximity to the campus and throughout the city. For suggestions, see osu-tulsa.okstate. edu/services/housing.asp. If you want to live on campus in Stillwater, Housing and Residential Life (reslife.okstate.edu) provides a number of choices for you to consider. The Housing Guide provides a list of contacts for apartments, rental agencies, and housing management agencies within the city of Stillwater. This handy guide can help you search for the right housing as well as provide helpful hints on how to inspect possible rental units, a budgeting sheet, and contact information for local utilities (e.g., phone, gas, cable, etc.) in Stillwater. In Tulsa, there are numerous housing options with houses and apartments available close to the campus and throughout the Tulsa metro area. For suggestions, see osu-tulsa.okstate.edu/ services/housing.asp. recreation We know that as a new student at OSU you will want to take part in activities when not concentrating on your studies. The recreational facilities are a perfect outlet for you to exercise your body when you are not exercising your mind. On the Stillwater campus, you will want to visit the OSU Colvin Center (campusrec.okstate.edu). This 240,000 square foot facility offers you one of the best activity centers for sport, recreation, and fitness in the nation. The Colvin Center is not your typical workout facility because it offers stateof-the-art equipment and facilities. Activity areas available to you include an indoor climbing wall, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, gymnastics, fencing, billiard, dance, golf, table tennis, wrestling, fitness machines, and weightlifting. Also, you can use courts for basketball, volleyball, badminton, and racquetball. The outdoor facilities include tennis courts, basketball courts, archery range, golf driving range, jogging track, and fields for soccer, rugby, and football. There are also a number of fee based classes offered for you including aerobics, yoga, spinning, and much more. Another great feature is it's within walking distance of the residence halls. Over the weekend, or in the evening, you can take a break from your studies and take advantage of the opportunities offered at the Colvin Center. On the Tulsa campus, the Wellness Center (osu-tulsa.okstate.edu/services/ wellness.asp) in North Hall provides you all the amenities of an expensive fitness club. Exercise machines and weight equipment are available. Also provided is blood pressure screening, and health education information. If you are not sure how to use equipment, staff will be happy to provide you an orientation as well as help you create a customized fitness program. On the Stillwater campus, consider participating in the Outdoor Adventure program (campusrec.okstate.edu/ outdooradventure). Their goal is to provide opportunities for fun, adventure, education, and excitement for you and your family. They sponsor a variety of regional and national trips as well as workshops for people at all skill levels. Past trips include white water rafting on the Rio Grande in New Mexico, hang gliding in Oklahoma, sea kayaking in California, volcano climbing in Mexico (Popocatepetl and El Pico de Orizaba). If you want to go camping or on a picnic with the family, they also provide rentals on camping equipment (backpacks, tents, etc.) and picnic activities (volleyball nets, tug-of-war rope, canoes) plus many other items. Whether it is exploring the Grand Canyon over Spring Break or spending the day at one of the local lakes, the Outdoor Adventure program can help outfit you. If you are interested in amateur sports, you might consider organizing or joining an intramural team. T he I ntramural Sports office (campusrec.okstate.edu/intramural) provides an avenue for teams to compete in soccer, dodgeball, volleyball, basketball, softball, flag football, wheelchair basketball (one of the best teams in the nation), and many other areas. A variety of sports, including adaptive sports, are offered during the fall and spring semesters. You can view their website for information about how to organize a team and activity areas. Perhaps the best feature of the Colvin Center in Stillwater and the Wellness Center in Tulsa is that the facilities are free for students enrolled on those campuses. The Colvin Center in Stillwater has generous hours of operation during the weekdays usually opening at 6:00 a.m. and closing at midnight with somewhat shortened hours over the weekend. The Wellness Center in Tulsa opens at 7:00 a.m. Monday through Friday with shortened hours over the weekend and summer semester. parking anD commuting Hui Ju Park hometown: Kangnamgu, South Korea program currently enrolled in: Ph.D. — Design, Housing, and Merchandising What attracted you to oSu for your graduate studies? OSU and the surrounding areas offer you a variety of cultural activities to stimulate your mind without being a drain on your money. Here are just a few suggestions. The Stillwater campus is a busy place with more than 200 student groups to keep you active. Each group offers a variety of activities. For example, through the efforts of the International Student Organization (orgs.okstate.edu/iso/) events such as Diwali Night and Cultural Night happen each year. Diwali Night offers students a night of Indian music, dancing and food. Cultural Night allows each of our international student groups the opportunity to show off their musical talents with dancing, music and clothing from their home country. One of the most popular events is the International Bazaar. Students from more than 100 countries represented at OSU set up displays of their native dress on the library lawn, and some of the groups sell products or food from their home country to raise money for their student clubs. One of the biggest events students look forward to attending is the Salsa Ball sponsored by the Latin Dance Club. The Salsa Ball is a unique opportunity to dress up and set the dance floor on fire. This event brings to campus the dancing passions of more than 350 salsa crazy people. You don’t know how to salsa? That is not a problem. The Latin Dance Club holds free lessons each weekend on campus during the fall and spring semesters. If you want to go off campus, the city of Stillwater offers many possible events. There is the fall County Fair complete with baking contests, carnival rides, and livestock showings. Stillwater is in the heart of cowboy country and there are several barbecue cook-offs held in town each year as well as several rodeos. The city has a bowling alley, multiplex movie theater, lakes, and parks. The city also sponsors art festivals, a blues music festival, and many other events. A complete list of activities in town can be found on the Visit Stillwater website at visitstillwater.org. Why did you choose oSu for your graduate studies? I chose OSU because of the excellent faculty and research opportunities. Also, the general sense of community on campus and in town is very welcoming and supportive. To prepare students for careers in academia, OSU offers a program that combines courses and practical experience to help OSU doctoral students become highly competitive as they pursue faculty positions and to give them a head start on the road to success in research, teaching, and service. All students earning doctorates at OSU receive the opportunities and guidance to excel in research, but academic institutions increasingly expect new faculty to be excellent teachers, render professional services, have collaboration skills, and contribute to students’ overall growth. These expectations are not typically addressed as part of your doctoral degree. The UFP program complements the research preparation that OSU’s doctoral programs provide with instruction in pedagogy through select coursework, observations of exemplary instruction, and practical experience. In the core course, Succeeding in the Professoriate, in which any doctoral student can enroll, participants learn about the job responsibilities and expectations for higher education faculty such as course planning and management, the tenure process, mentoring, resource acquisition and management, and service within and outside an institution. In two other core courses, participants develop their understanding of human learning, and instructional design. Next, they participate in an apprenticeship in which they observe and receive guidance from a qualified faculty mentor in their discipline. Finally, during the teaching practicum, program participants teach a course under the supervision of their UFP mentor. While earning their certificates, participants also gain an understanding of the current research-based “best practices” in college teaching; receive guidance while creating a professional portfolio, including statement of teaching philosophy, research plan, and syllabi; interview faculty nationwide via videoconference; have the opportunities to obtain video-recorded documentation of their teaching; become informed about the types of institutions best suited for their careers; and learn about institutional citizenship including governance, compliance, equity, and collegiality. It became a separate event in 1921 and has become one of the nation’s largest homecoming celebrations. Today, OSU’s homecoming draws crowds in excess of 30,000 to Stillwater, with events such as the Harvest Carnival, window and sign painting competitions, walk-around, pep rally and parade. You won’t believe it until you see it. orangeconnection.org/homecoming What are all those people doing with their arms in the air at the athletic events? The WAVE! The first documented waving was at Varsity Revue in the 1920’s. The wave symbolizes the waving wheat of the Oklahoma plains - one of Oklahoma’s leading agricultural commodities. The Waving Song was adapted from “In Old New York” from the musical “The Red Mill.” School Colors: Orange and Black OSU’s school colors are Orange and Black. Not only do our athletic teams wear the colors, but students and fans wear orange at all the games. It is also a tradition to wear orange on Fridays in solidarity to the University. Theta Pond Theta Pond is on the Stillwater campus, and was built in 1895. It was originally known as the Horse Pond because it watered the horses and other livestock housed in a nearby horse barn. In 1922, it became known as Theta Pond, drawing its name from the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority located across the street. Over the last 60 years, Theta Pond has undergone numerous renovations and changes including expansion, lighting, and landscaping. Spirit Rider A rider carrying the OSU flag rides a horse into Boone Pickens Stadium at the beginning of each home game and after each touchdown. The “Spirit Rider’ tradition began in 1984 when student John Beall became the first rider, using his own horse. OSU purchased its own Spirit Rider horse in 1988 and named him “Bullet” through a contest in the student newspaper. facebook.com/pages/ Oklahoma-State-University/39013362306 twitter.com/okstatenews youtube.com/okstatenews Bedlam Games Throughout the year, Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma compete in various athletic events. Fans from both schools show up in huge groups to help support their favorite university. Describing the Bedlam Rivalry in words is almost impossible. A bedlam game, no matter what sport, brings fans to their feet from the first moment, and they hold their breath until the very end. 25 230 223 132 222 326 227 314 325 31 228 313 407 406 306 305 233 224 130 129 410 405 212 404 213 C D 322 214 117 215 321 323 216 E 319 116 F 315 226 217 318 115 316 114 128 101 317 104 113 110 105 219 218 111 320 220 100 229 409 112 221 102 200 408 202 124 127 203 201 204 ton ng shi 125 St a SW 232 205 311 309 310 308 312 304 225 300 307 303 302 301 211 231 118 210 103 208 209 109 402 207 403 107 324 400 108 106 401 119 ck St ND uck St 120 N Kn o blo 121 122 206 St uck ND 126 SK no b loc kS t 123 Graduate College Oklahoma State University 202 Whitehurst Stillwater, OK 74078-1019 Oklahoma State University, in compliance with Title VI and VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Executive Order 11246 as amended, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and other federal laws and regulations, does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, religion, disability, or status as a veteran in any of its policies, practices or procedures.
