Spring 2012 Anatomy &Physiology 2 Lab BSC 2086L Lab Coordinator: Geri Mayer Phone: 561-297-2405 SC 142 E-mail: gmayer@fau.edu TA Information:____________________________________________ Prerequisite: none Corequisite: BSC 2086 Lecture Credits = 1 In this class you will become familiar with the various systems of the human body through the use of various dissection materials including the sheep’s heart, ovaries, and testicles and the cat. The focus of the lab is primarily anatomy with emphasis on structure and function, leaving the majority of the physiology component to the lecture. This lab is interesting and it is fun! Please familiarize yourself with the rules. REQUIRED MATERIALS: Each student is required to purchase the text, Principles of Anatomy and Physiology, by Tortora or Martini, the lab manual, Human Anatomy & Physiology Laboratory Manual, Marieb’s 10th edition, PAR, a dissection kit, and gloves. All of the materials must be brought to every lab. Your participation grade depends on this. We are also using PAR this semester, an online platform for quizzes and extra credit available only at the FAU bookstore, designed to provide you with readiness for the practical exams. These will be weekly quizzes online with ample extra credit opportunities to provide practical examlike questions that will hopefully give your grade a boost. SAFETY: Safety in the lab is very important. No eating or drinking will be permitted in the laboratory. Shoes must be worn at all times (no roller blades, etc). Your TA will review our clean laboratory policy. Your bench must be cleaned and wiped down after each class. Dissection trays must be washed and rinsed. Report all breakages to the instructor immediately. You may want to bring safety goggles and lab coats for dissection. ATTENDANCE & MAKE-UP POLICY: Two unexcused absences will cause you to fail this course. Attendance is required and mandatory. The credit issued for this course is primarily for hands-on experience. You will be allowed one excused absence only. If you must miss a lab, you may attend the Friday 2:00pm make-up lab (in SC116) one time only per semester during the week of the missed lab. You must stay for the entire lab to get credit for the quiz in both your own lab and the make-up lab. An unexcused absence will result in participation points being deducted from your grade for that lab. If you miss two labs without an excuse, you will automatically fail the course if you are not maintaining a passing grade. If you are maintaining a passing grade, you may withdraw with an “I” and make up those labs during a subsequent course, in order to receive credit. YOU MUST TAKE PRACTICAL EXAMS IN YOUR OWN SECTION!! NO MAKE UP PRACTICALS! PARTICIPATION: Participation and enthusiasm for this course and will significantly increase the value of what you learn. You will receive a total of 25 participation points. Up to 2 points per lab can be deducted for lack of participation, punctuality problems, leaving early, or not being prepared for class. This could impact your final grade. GRADING POLICY: Seven lab quizzes will be given on designated days, worth 25 points each. Your lowest score will be dropped. No make-up quizzes will be given unless you take the make-up lab. Two practical exams will be given, worth 100 points each. PAR points are worth 100, and PPP factor for participation is worth 25 points. The PhysioEx worksheets (31&33A and 41B) will also be worth 25 points each. Total points possible = 525. Disability Policy Statement: In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) students who require reasonable accommodations due to a disability to properly execute coursework must register with the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) - SU 133.
